RTD Tea Market Trend 2018

Digestive Wellness • Inulin and Oligofructose aid in constipation and promote good bacteria in colon (Micka et

al., 2017).

• EFSA (2015) published a positive evaluation on Orafti Inulin’s effect on improving bowel

function & increasing stool frequency.

• Positive results were shown through a study in which a total intake of 12g chicory inulin

per day increases weekly stool frequency in supporting normal bowel habits and also

helps to achieve the dietary goal of adequate fibre intake.

Uni-President (Thailand) introduced the Daily Mate Healthy Tea to provide

a guilt-free experience to consumers and improve digestive system with

fiber where this unsweetened green tea is made from bitter gourd, white

kidney bean extract and L-Carnitine.

Plant-based

Fit for Fun Isotonic Ice Tea

• Inulin and Oligofructose are plant-based dietary fibers and are extracted from the roots of

the chicory plant which are natural and GMO free.

• They are often used in combination with high intensity sweeteners to create a more

balanced and sugar-like palate without any off-taste.

• Palatinose is another plant-based natural functional carbohydrates that derived from

sugar beet.

Isotonic Ice Tea with flavors: green tea and limes/black tea and citrus/

mints. Each flavour contain isomaltulose and vitamins (Vitamin C,

niacin, pantothenic acid and vitamin B6)

Pink Grapefruit: Contains real fruit juices (grapefruit/apple/lemon) and

black tea

Mints: Contains strong herbal infusion (water, peppermint leaves, balm

leaves, lemon grass, camomile blossoms, sage leaves) and lemon juice.

Green tea and limes: contains green tea infusion, lime and lemon

juices.

Protein

The Blu-Dot Protein Teas are currently available in great flavours combinations including Orange Pineapple, Blueberry Acai, Cranberry Pomegranate and cherry mango. They contain whey protein isolate as protein source and inulin as fibre enhancement.

• Whey protein has a myriad of benefits by providing high level of branched and essential

chain amino acids (Shankar & Bansal, 2013).

• According to Mordor Intelligence (2017), global production of whey protein had amounted

to 240 million MT in 2014 and is expected to increase by 3.5% annually.

• Protein consumption is no longer only for workout. Consuming adequate proteins at

breakfast can start the day with a sustained feeling of fullness for the morning (Duyff,

2017).

• It also stimulates the product innovations in weight management such as meal

replacement & slimming aids built on protein (Mintel, 2014).

• Sugar is the new fat: Sugar has replaced fat as a key consumer concern – they are

associated with obesity and diabetes. Eventualy, sugar may be associated with

inflammation.

• There is an increased number of product reformulation in reducing sugar and an increase

in marketing efforts highlighting the sugar reduction in new formulations.

• Light, unsweetened and sugar-free variants are gaining popularity (Arthur, 2017).

Sugar

Nestle Waters has launched a new range of real-brewed iced tea made from real sugar and stevia extract. The flavours include unsweetened black tea, slightly sweet black tea, slightly sweet black tea with rooibos, and slightly sweet organic green tea.

Inflammation

• Both spices ginger and cumin have good antioxidant potential (Mashhadi et al., 2016).

• Curcumin is the active chemical in turmeric root where it shown an anti-inflammatory

benefit which can translate to reduced joint pain and swelling.

• Ginger has staring potential with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties which

contains active ingredients that can reduce inflammation pathways in the body. It

showed to reduce osteoarthritis symptoms along with its anti-inflammatory properties

(Mashhadi et al., 2016).

Cinnamon Sunrise Herbal Tea is a blend of organic Vietnamese cinnamon and Fair Trade Certified red rooibos from South Africa brewed together for an unsweetened zero-calorie drink.
