At this time of year we always seem to look back on the past year and to that end all I have to say is I hope your holidays were good and the year

treated you well. What I am really excited about is this year. In 2015, RSTI celebrates a major anniversary. We are starting our 30th year of helping healthcare providers keep their cost down and develop their service professionals. For hospitals the forecast for the future is slightly less vague.

As we start our 30th year, I reflect on all of the careers we have touched. While attending the various trade shows and society meetings, I run into countless former students and we often wind up sharing personal stories of how training at RSTI has helped them in one way or another. Some are managers, many are senior service engineers now and some are still getting started with imaging but making good progress. Congratulations to all of you! It invigorates all of us at RSTI to hear that we have factored into your success.

Over the years, we have seen many changes and passed many milestones. We have also seen many companies come and go, over the years, claiming to be able to duplicate what RSTI does.

What sustains us is our continual drive to be the best educational experience available,

anywhere.

We are often told how favorably we compare to OEM training or that we are the best place for the introductory education to get started in any imaging modality. To be honest, even colleges send their students to RSTI for the imaging portion of the biomed programs they offer.

In recent years, the rapid introduction of new technologies to the medical imaging field has made it necessary to add new material and in some cases entire sections as hand-outs to our X-Ray Certificate series of classes. At the same time, while researching these new technologies, we were developing training materials to present at trade shows and biomedical society meetings.

With all of this valuable information already developed, and after completing an extensive review of what topics we currently teach and what should be added to our courses, we concluded that it was time for new books.

We are now in the process of completing

the 5th edition of our basic X-Ray

training manuals.

This edition will be the most significant update. Having added so much new information though, we had to eliminate some material from the textbooks and classroom discussions.

We have a plan to cover anything we took out. Recognizing that some of our students may still have to work with the older information that was taken out of the books, we moved all of that material to our Moodle server. Students currently take their quizzes and tests through Moodle while they are taking classes. Now they can also have access to all of the material removed from the textbooks.

For students who need to understand these older topics, they can review the content on the Moodle server in their free time and if they have questions they can ask the instructor for help during breaks while they are still here at RSTI.

On other fronts, we will continue to expand into other modalities and develop new product specific courses. We were happy to reintroduce Principles of Servicing Nuclear Medicine System at the end of last year and plan to continue the program in 2015 with the expectation of adding product specific courses to the Nuclear Medicine line. We also expect to reintroduce a reformatted Multivendor Ultrasound Service training program.

So here we go... it’s 2015. We hope this year is

your best ever!

Behind the SceneSA Look at RSTI’s Team Culture BY Jim monro RSTI Consultant

1rSTi instructors don’t grow on trees…We all have had teachers, instructors or professors somewhere in our background. Three hundred million people

can tell you who taught them best and at what school. My kids went to schools where more than one instructor taught their classes. Guess whose classes they registered for to advance their education? The one whose class filled in the first hour of open registration. There are teachers and there are instructors. When I was in school, I just picked the class that had afternoon hours, so I didn’t have to get up at seven o’clock in the morning. By then my eyes were propped open enough to make it look like I was paying attention. My method was good for meeting my social needs and the minimum acceptable to move up and out of school, until I got to college. There, after switching majors 3 times, I found my niche, education. I loved English, Creative Writing, and Speech. Back before communication is what it is today, that’s what I was good at, so I became a teacher, not an instructor. With my student teaching, diploma and certification all in place, I headed out.

2rSTi instructors are home grown…Like a home grown tomato, the quality of these instructors is unparalleled. They learn every day, not just from

research and experience, but from every student that passes through our doors. Until 2009, each instructor was hand-picked by our own, “Master Chief,” of sorts, Terry Speth, Sr. While in the Navy, Terry was taught electronics by using the Mager methodology. At Picker years ago, he built a whole training department around this method. Andrew Mager’s techniques are still popular in seminars, books and online training all over the world. It became the foundation for highly disciplined, properly motivated, and properly prepared curriculum building, whose primary goal was student retention (i.e., how much knowledge they retained over time). This defined method of retention is used in our military to make sure that what is taught can be put to practical use in the field. That’s just one of the reasons why RSTI courses are unique. Each of the instructors here was taught his method one way or another, and it continues to trickle down to those who

never met Terry. Mager’s methods claim the highest retention rate for their students in the vocational technical school category. For perspective, classroom education only has a 20% retention rate. Classroom, plus some type of hands-on involvement moves that up to 40%. And finally Mager’s approach boasts over a 60% rate.

3rSTi instructors have unique versatility in a uniquely student friendly environment. They are not the double-jointed, gymnastic types who can

bend in any direction, but they are extremely adept at a few things:

a: research is where it all begins; whether it is a new modality, a new model or a new method, RSTI studies for weeks while putting together an objective and preliminary outline showing the progression of the course over five or ten days. We provide eight hour days of intensive work for the AVERAGE student. Since students are never average in a class, we can have education divergence in a class as small as four to a current maximum of 24. Every one of our instructors must be able to bend the curriculum up and down as needed to make sure each student gets what he needs to go home being trained to do what his environment requires without gulping the information down so fast that they have no chance at retention or regurgitating it because they bit off more than they can chew. Did I

just say that? I meant raise the bar and lower the bar for those of you with weak stomachs.

B: Technology is racing forward passing the basic knowledge and understanding of what does what and what goes where. Today your old toolbox has been replaced in many cases by a new, super whiz-bang digital program. As long as you can read a menu and follow the steps, you can now calibrate, troubleshoot, test, and align electronically. If you need the OEM to take a look, you just have to plug them in to your system. Notwithstanding all of the benefits of technology, what happens if you have to think for yourself? You will be up the proverbial creek, as they say. That’s why RSTI never abandoned the basic knowledge of how every part and piece, electronically and mechanically works, and where it came from…RSTI teaches you in a way that prepares you to think on your own, and that does not come in 2 days or 3 days at the lowest possible price. Here you learn the predecessor machines and discuss what’s coming next, so you are totally prepared to cover up to 80% of your equipment failure issues.

If you want to buy the best mobile smartphone in the market, you buy an Apple product. Someone else might have more pixels per inch and bigger RAM to float their boat. Damn that’s good! Anyway, I meant their bloated, native software and other people’s, forced upon you, software to get onboard. The Apple method, just like the Mager method provides the umbrella in either case to keep your future prepared and protected.

Lastly, this is the first in a short series that will explain why pulling an engineer from the field to teach, and giving him or her just enough time to race through the material, while taking care of their day job on the phone at every break, will cost you a helluva lot more money than spending the time and money to get a professional education from professional educators.

More to Come,

Jim Monro

PHILIPS BRILLIANCE CT TRAINING6/10/16/40/64 Slice

BY Todd BoYland RSTI Director of Training

RSTI’s first Philips Brilliance Family course (December 2014) was a huge success. This course provides the service engineer with all the necessary skills from daily routine maintenance to in-depth issues such as a complete tube change. The course covers all the major service related issues in-depth, including:

MRC tube change

PM

Detector module & element analysis

Power slip rings

Optical slip rings

Host PC & CIRS ghosting & software reload

RSTI’s Brilliance Family CT Training Course covers the

6/10/16/40/64 slice models

The Brilliance system is one of the most (if not the most) software intensive CT platforms on the market. We make sure to spend a lot of lab time on the software utilities that the service engineer uses to troubleshoot common failure items such as:

E-Stop Circuit problems

CAN Bus problems

Optical slip ring transfer problems

Artifact evaluation

The April 2015 class is full, so look for availability

in the June & October 2015 courses.

Coming Soon!RSTI Online Bookstore

We are even working on an all-inclusive PM kit to offer for sale to our students. The PM kit will include all consumables and specialty tools that are required during a PM. Look out for RSTI’s web bookstore for these items soon!

principles of Service: nuclear medical SystemsCourse Now Available for the first time in Years!BY mikE PETElin // RSTI Instructor

In the medical imaging industry, there has been a lack of training in the field of Nuclear Medicine. In 2014 we embarked on a quest to rectify this issue. In September, we held our first “Principles of Servicing Nuclear Medical Systems” in nearly 15 years. The main focus of the class is safety, physics, chemistry, and image acquisition. One interesting aspect of nuclear imaging is the source. Unlike x-ray, the source is always live. Well, at least until enough time has passed. This makes for some strict storage, transport and safety rules. When the radioisotope is injected into the patient, the patient becomes the source for the image acquisition with the gamma camera. Join us February 9-13 for a fun-filled week of isotopes and gamma cameras!

DAVE’S RAVEPhase I - Innovate, Evolve and AdaptBY daVE domanSki RSTI Instructor

Greetings from RSTI. As I write this I am looking forward to the next Phase I class. Some folks think that Phase I “Principles of Servicing

Diagnostic Imaging Systems” is just a basic course of simple fundamentals that remains the same for time immemorial, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In reality, Phase I is akin to a living organism that

isn’t just growing but also evolving along the

way. Just as an organism must adapt and innovate

in order to survive a changing environment, so must the teaching environment and the

curriculum.

Years ago we drastically changed the classroom experience when we moved from overhead projectors and transparencies to digital projectors and Smart Boards.

Recently we evolved from paper quizzes and tests to online testing using Moodle, all the while incorporating new and innovative technological advancements to contemporary X-ray imaging systems throughout the curriculum. Soon our students will enjoy class manuals printed in glorious color and updated yet again with more cutting edge informational goodness relevant to today’s imaging service professional.

Like the other great classes offered by RSTI, Phase I is chock full of the hands-on experience that our students demand and get here in our world-class facility.

The lecture portion of the class covers topics from x-ray service principles to everything you will need to know about radiation safety. Students learn all about the principles of x-ray production, filament drive, the difference between tube current and filament current and how to measure both. Special emphasis is given to image quality in both analog and digital environments.

All Phase I students get plenty of lab time and real world experience on multiple systems under the tutelage of a genuine field service engineer who understands the scenarios that they are likely to encounter out there in the trenches.

Communication skills are an important part of the imaging expert’s tool kit as well. To that end we go to great lengths to make sure our students receive training in the language and nomenclature of imaging so they can be effective communicators in the field.

As the world of imaging service continues to evolve, RSTI will meet it step for step by continuing to adapt and innovate. Send your Service Professionals out there prepared. Send them to RSTI..

major Changes to RSTI x-Ray Certificate Series Phases I-IVBY JoE gEarY RSTI Instructor

In keeping with our commitment to provide our students with the highest quality diagnostic imaging service training, the team at RSTI is continually

updating our courses and lab equipment to keep up with the rapidly changing technologies in the industry. To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are going to start the new year with major changes to the curriculum of our X-Ray Certificate Series (Phases I-IV) courses.

In our “Advanced Rad iograph ic Systems Maintenance” Phase II course, we are expanding the sections covering CR, DR, inverter technology, multi-

processor controlled systems, CAN bus communications, automated calibrations and fault isolation techniques.

The team will also be updating and expanding the sections of the manual dealing with ancillary equipment such as tube hangers, tables and buckys. This will include calibrations and repair of these devices.

Phase III “Advanced Fluoroscopic Systems Maintenance” is being expanded to include a greater emphasis on

CCD cameras and flat-panel systems.

The labs are getting additional PACS workstations to support the innovative technologies now available through the phase courses.

With all of this new material introduced to an already jam-packed curriculum, some things have to go. In order to make room for the cutting edge technologies, we are going to be moving some of the older but still relevant material to Moodle, our on-line testing server. This way our students will still have access to this valuable information for reference or self-study.

We look forward to sharing all of these

exciting changes with you in 2015!
