Mastering:cinema,tabletorOTTIn the old days, an immense amount of individual copies had to be created and shipped around the globe – a very time-consuming and costly process. Digital mastering and its corresponding distribution channels have changed this forever. A Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the modernday replacement for old-fashioned film reels. It also retains some of the original ideas from the movie industry, such as the different layers or, today, number of source files: image, audio, and subtitles.

Mastering, i.e. packaging the created images, audio, and subtitles for the cinema environment, is a complex and critical task. It starts with the importing and arranging of delivered video, audio, and subtitle assets, continues with the management of different language versions, reel editing and handling, image encoding, audio labelling as well as correct package naming, and ends with the generation of valid KDMs for the individual cinemas and visual quality checking of the final images and subtitles.
But enjoying movies in cinema theatres is just one step of the chain in which CLIPSTER shines – its fields of application are expanding; just think of OTT, VOD or even digital data archiving. Here, CLIPSTER is able to apply its mastering skills to the world of mezzanine formats.

State-of-the-art DCI masteringCLIPSTER can generate DCI masters with 2D and 3D con-tent. Following the DCI specification, CLIPSTER enables you to create fast and secure stereoscopic Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs). CLIPSTER’s DCI Mastering Wizard lets you conveniently perform all steps in the stereoscopic DCI Mastering process including interleaving (for 3D content), encoding, encryption, and wrapping into MXF files. With CLIPSTER’s unique hardware accelerator, this process can be accomplished faster than realtime.

HighframerateCLIPSTER can attain frame rates that have never before been achieved in the cinema. In 4K, 2D films can be mastered in high quality at 120 fps instead of the well-established 24 fps standard rate. In 3D, even 60 fps per eye are possible. With the higher frame rate, movements appear noticeably crisper and smoother to the viewer – especially with fast tracking shots or jerky actions. The high frame rate eliminates critical image issues that are annoying to the eye such as shaking or judder caused by the lack of continuity be-tween consecutive frames. As such, the high frame rate results are much more realistic than at the standard rate of 24 fps, especially in 3D.
