CAN WE JUST START BYSAYING ...A huge thanks to over 180 musicians (we counted!) forparticipating in our 2nd annual Brit Jazz Fest fortnight inAugust. It was great to see full houses every night for avaried, and at points challenging programme which reflectedthe wealth and diversity of jazz talent in this country. Wehope you were able to check out some of it for yourself.

A special mention to ‘Brit Jazz Radio’, our inaugural radiostation effort which really heightened the festival buzz. It wasbroadcast on FM and online over the two weeks and nowcontinues 24/7 online. September starts with a trio of top vocalists Terry Reid, LianeCarroll and Mica Paris. Other highlights - a week’s run forpremier Scottish soul/funksters Average White Band (alreadysold out, sorry), US hip-hop influenced Hypnotic Brass andeffortlessly cool vocalist Jose James, plus Nigel Kennedyleading a very special gig to celebrate Jimi Hendrix’s last everperformance on stage at Ronnie Scott’s precisely 40 years ago.Following this, a night to commemorate the recent and tragicpassing of our beloved house drummer, Chris Dagley.

one of the world’s premier funk and soul acts. Hailing from theunlikely funk stronghold of Scotland, they produced a string ofhit songs that includes Pick Up The Pieces, Cut The Cake andSchoolboy Crush, and have ensured a lasting longevity with a

younger, more modern audience who have been drawn to theirinfectious grooves through samples of their music on tracks by

Hypnotic Brass EnsembleOne of several recent groups who combine the traditions of theNew Orleans brass band with more contemporary sounds suchas ska and hip-hop, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are one ofthe most convincing. The band comprises eight brothers witha strong pedigree already in place in the shape of their father,Sun Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran. Having supported Blur in HydePark in summer 2009, the Chicagoans are well versed inentertaining London crowds but their Ronnie’s gigs will seetheir livewire performances compressed and focused in a muchmore intimate and engaging setting - not to be missed!

Jose JamesOne of the artists credited with bringing jazz sensibilities to a

wider audience without running the risk of ‘dumbing down’, JoséJames has managed to combine elements of the music with

soul, hip-hop and R&B to sensuous and sophisticated effect. His2008 debut album The Dreamer, released through Gilles

Peterson’s Brownswood label, revealed an innate musicalsensitivity and showcased his effortlessly cool vocals, backed by

a simple but highly effective piano trio. His return to Ronnie’s isa treat for audiences from across the musical spectrum.
