For the chest x-ray, the RT would set everything up then tell Mr. Mowrey to take in a big deep breath, blow it out, and take another deep breath in and hold it, it is important for the RT to watch Mr. Mowrey do this and ensure that he understands so they can get the best image possible. Then for the femur x-ray, the RT should show him what to do and have him copy them.

Case Study Assignment

Directions: Read the following case studies and answer the questions at the end of each. Responses should be submitted on this assignment in a font color OTHER than black. Answers should be thorough and with correct spelling and grammar. The assignment must be submitted through the assignment link on Blackboard. The assignment is due Friday, November 22nd 11:59pm through Bb.

Case Study 1

Mr. Mowrey was admitted through the emergency department with a bacterial infection resulting from femur trauma. The leg wound is open and weeping. Mr. Mowrey is elderly and has difficulty hearing and he does not wear a hearing aid. The emergency room physician has requested a mobile chest x-ray and femur.

1. What type of personal protective equipment, if any, should the RT wear for this examination? The RT should wear gloves, a gown, and they should wear eye protection in case anything comes out of the wound.

2. Describe how the RT should address Mr. Mowrey and explain what will occur. The RT should speak loudly and slowly to Mr. Mowrey because he is hard of hearing. It would be helpful for the RT to act out what they need him to do because he is still able to see.

3. Would clean tech/dirty tech be applicable in this situation? If yes, explain how it would be performed. The clean member is responsible for handling the equipment and the dirty tech touches the patient, which could be applicable in this situation because Mr. Mowrey has an open wound, which could have blood or other pathogens coming out of it. This would prevent contamination of equipment and help stop the transmission of diseases. In this case the clean tech would operate the portable tube and take the exposure and the dirty tech would palpate and position Mr. Mowrey.

Morgan was born in a foreign country and spends little time in the US. She speaks little English and has arrived today with only her teenage son who drove her. Mrs. Morgan is extremely uneasy and nervous as she is escorted into the exam room.

1. How should the RT communicate with Mrs. Morgan regarding the examination? What techniques can the RT use to explain what will occur and what Mrs. Morgan needs to do for the procedure? The RT could speak a little slower and show Mrs. Morgan step by step what she is going to do. The RT should not speak loudly because that will not help Mrs. Morgan understand better and it will just make her more nervous. The RT should watch Mrs. Morgan do the proper breathing and demonstrate to her what the proper position looks like. The RT could also have the son explain the procedure to her in her native language if that is an option, if not then the RT should act out each thing Mrs. Morgan will be doing and have her perform them back.

2. Does the RT need to wear any personal protective equipment? If yes, what kind is appropriate? The RT should wear gloves, a gown, and a mask, which will help break the chain of infection. The mask helps stop germs from the nose and mouth from spreading. It can also keep the RT from breathing in some germs. The gown would protect the RT’s skin and the gloves would protect the RT against contact with infectious materials

3. What types of diseases can produce a fever and productive cough? List three.-Pneumonia -Flu-Bronchitis
