WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION &
INFORMATION SOCIETY DAY 2019
Theme: Bridging the Standardization Gap
17th May 2019
The World Telecommunication Day was organized on 17th May
2019 jointly with IETE, Chennai Centre, at IETE Hall, Chennai.
This year IETE celebrate Golden Jubilee of the World
Telecommunication and Information Society Day which is being
celebrated annually since 1969. The day marks the founding of
ITU on 17th May 1865 when the first International Telegraph
Convention was signed in Paris. Bridging the Standardization
Gap (BSG) is a fundamental part of ITU's mission to connect
the world. BSG is also one of the 5 strategic objectives of ITU's
standardization sector (ITU-T). The overreaching goal of the
BSG programme is to address the disparities in the ability of
developing countries, relative to developed ones, to access,
implement and influence ITU's international standards. In this
context, the BSG programme aims to facilitate the efficient
participation of developing countries in ITU's standards-making
process, to disseminate information about existing standards,
and to assist developing countries in the implementation of
standards.
Sri Tata Sudhakar, Chairman Chennai Centre who welcomed
the gathering briefed the significance of the Golden Jubilee
celebration and touched upon the history and development of
World Telecommunication Union.
Sri S Ramaswamy, Governing Council member, IETE Chennai
read the message received from Secretary General, ITU, and
Special Address on the occasion.

From the Chairman’s Desk....
Let us transform ourselves as Active Members of IEI
Dear Fellow Engineers,
I am happy to share my thought process
that our IEI TNSC has given the big
responsibility of starting the Centenary
year celebrations.
First, I am grateful to our all officer
bearers of IEI at all levels. Particularly
in last 20 years where disruptive changes are happening
everywhere, every field, every one's life, sustaining over
a period of 99 years is still a great achievement. I am pride
of this great achievement and I invite all our members to
join this Great Pride in large numbers on Sep 13th 2019
at Chennai.
Second, I would like to set “higher standards”, highest
involvement and hence with active whole hearted support
of IEI TNSC executive committee, we are organising 3
important knowledge sharing events during September and
November, we would like to plan more for the next year.
Third, when my thinking is going on in expansion of
membership drive. I am thinking of present existing
members of 27000 in Tamilnadu . IEI TNSC would like to
remain relevant for ever, that is possible only with Active
involvement of members in various activities like technical
lecture, one day workshop, seminar, convention,
conferences etc., In this connection, I request all the
members to become more active, to get ready for vibrant
IEI.
I request all the corporate members to bring in more and
more new members into the IEI with slogan “EVERY
MEMBER INDUCT NEW MEMBER” to double the
strength of IEI Tamilnadu.

Report of “Emerging Business Opportunities in Speciality Chemicals and fine Chemicals”
17th May 2019
The Institution of Engineers (India) Taminadu State Centre
organized a workshop on the theme “Emerging Business
Opportunities in Speciality Chemicals and Fine Chemicals” in
association with Chemical Industries Association, Indian
Chemical Council and Manali Industries Association on 17th May
2019 at IEI TNSC auditorium, Chennai.
In order to catalyze the development of new business ideas and
guide the thoughts and share ideas the Institution of Engineers
(India) Tamilnadu State Centre organized a workshop on
“Emerging Business Opportunities in Specialty Chemicals and
Fine Chemicals”.
Er S Rajagopal, Chairman, Chemical Engineering Division
Board, IEI and Chairman, IEI, Madurai Local Centre has
delivered about the theme of workshop.
Soon after the liberalization and normalization of customs duties,
mostly in line with WTO agreements, our country is also entering
in to free trade agreements with many countries with a view to
improve the relationships between them. However, this has
resulted in southward price trend for the chemical products and
a strong squeeze on the margins for the chemical industry in
general. Particularly, small and medium scale chemical industries
are struggling to avoid making losses and survive. The constant
pressure on the bottom line and net cash flow is driving many
such players out of their conventional business activities and
these results in a frenzied search for alternate avenues for
survival.
Opportunities for the medium and small players, in the
conventional chemicals are being closed up by the consolidation
of businesses and also by expansion by major players in to global
scale. Entrepreneurs looking for opportunities, typically in the
small scale or medium scale, have to now explore outside such
product lines as the doors are practically closed for any new
entrant by the big players.
Mr S Ilanahai, President, Chemical Industries Association
welcomed the gathering and Chief Guest. Dr Krishnakumar
Rangachari, Executive Director, Chemplast Sanmar delivered
the Inaugural address. Mr K Ravichandran, Sr. Vice President,
Co-Head Corporate Rating-ICRA delivered the Key note address.
The speakers of the seminar were Mr P M C Nair, Chairman,
Indian Chemical Council & Executive Director - Thirumalai
Chemicals Ltd., Ms Aarthi Janakiraman, Frost & Sullivan,
Mr Premchand, Avalon Consultants, Mr R Venkatraman,
PROU India Engineering Pvt Ltd., Dr S Viswanathan, Fibtec
Enterprises and Mr S R Sridhar, Managing Director, OROR
Flavours and Chemicals Ltd.,.
Mr P S Venkataraghavan, General Manager, Supreme
Petrochem Ltd., - Manali Industries Association proposed the
Vote of Thanks.
