Riverside Recreational Trails was once again pleased to participate in theJurupa Valley Adopt-A-Family Santa Parade on Saturday night. Theorganization provides many services throughout the year, and has a toy drive

at the holidays. Theychoose four routesthrough different partsof the City of JurupaValley each year. Thisyear, RRT chose to ridein the route through theneighborhood of SkyCountry on December1st. There were severalfloats including a train engine, fire truck, a Disney “Frozen”float, and of course the Santa float.

RRT provided five decorated horses. The spectators loved seeing the horses all dressed up in lights. The riderswere Annemarie Southern, Megan Southern, Becky Hageman, Kimberlie Hall, and Russell Grace. We also had adecorated pooper scooper golf cart donated by Valerie Burt and Bob Laurence. Our hard-working pooper scoopersthis year were Bill Harrison and Elara Riedel. The parade started around 5:30 in the northwest corner of the Sky

Country development and woundaround the development collecting toysfor three hours before ending up in theSoutheast corner around 8:30. Theparade itself was a little bit shorter inlength than last year.

All of the horses kept their riders safeand in the saddle, even with the flashinglights, sirens, and loud music. Althoughthe riders have learned from the past todress warm since the temperature dropsdown to the 50’s by the time the paradeis over, they have their horse to helpkeep them warm. Next time, the pooperscoopers will remember that lesson tooand dress much warmer – lol!

This is Gene and Becky from Norco! Our horsesnamed Mel, Lena, and Lily are part of our family. Theyare quarter horses and paint. We love to horse campand enjoy being outdoors. We love the trails and therural lifestyle Norco provides. There is so many favoriteplaces to ride but I do enjoy riding in Cuyamaca thebest. In addition to the 3 horses we also have 2 minihorses, multiple chickens, dogs, turtles, and others. Allcreatures are welcomed at our home.

The summer of 2018 was a great one. We were ableto do some traveling with our family. One of the stopswe made was in Iceland. We were fortunate enough toride the Icelandic horses. It was a wonderful experience.I enjoyed the information regarding the saddlery andtack use from another country. It was interesting to seehow Iceland rural lifestyle compares to ours in the USA.

The ride was approximately an hour and half. The horseshad a nice trot for riding. These little horses can hold upto 400 lbs., amazing for their size. Iceland’s green landswere gorgeous to be out riding and enjoying.I highly recommend if you ever visit Icelandbe sureto go on a ride!

Welcome to Iceland

RRT has visited Paramount Ranch on manytrail rides thru this old Western Town. This isa short story from Kathy Edgar, an RRTmember and her memory of her adventure inthis famous Western Town.

I was very sad to hear that Paramount Ranch burntdown in the Woolsey Fire near Thousand Oaks in TheSanta Monica Mountains.

Paramount Ranch is where they filmed countlesswestern movies over the last 90 years. To name one wasDr. Quinn Medicine Woman. From there we rode acrossto Malibu State Creek Park. We rode about an hour andreached where they filmed the movie MASH.

If any one remembers we started the ride out inbeautiful land that was picture perfect. We crossed thebridge to get to the “Western Town.” All trailheadsextend from the Western Town, except the trail that goestoward Mulholland highway. After about an hour westopped. We sent a scout into town to warning everyone

that a group of bandits on horse back are on the way toshoot up the town. Then it all happened. We ran our horsesthru the town pretending to shoot anyone in site. Not onlydid the riders have fun but the people in the town did too.

You will never know the true value of a moment until itbecomes a memory. Make the most of the moment causeyou never know what you have until it’s gone. I knowthey can re-build the town but the land will take a longtime and I don’t think it will be in our life time.

Visiting ParamountRanch Western Town

Paramount Ranch offers several miles of easy tomoderate scenic hikes through chaparral, riparian, andvalley oak savannah plant communities. Equestrians andmountain bikers may access these multi-use trails.Wildlife sightings might include red-tailed hawks, acornwoodpeckers, blue heron and deer.

Stroll through Western Town and enjoy a shadedpicnic area. This real-life motion picture set is alteredslightly with each production, yet retains a Westernmotif.

Western Town is not the only icon of ParamountRanch... be on the lookout for our two native oak species— coast live oak, and valley oak. Experience the rarevalley oak savannah, which may become extinct withindecades due to the effects of climate change.

Brief History...In 1927, Paramount Pictures purchased 2,700 acres

of the old Rancho Las Virgenes for use as a “movieranch.” For 25 years, a veritable who’s who ofHollywood practiced their craft at Paramount Ranchincluding director Cecil B. Demille and actors BobHope, Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert. The diverselandscape was the real star of the show.

You can experience the area where Bob Hope starredin Caught in the Draft (1941) and Sandra Bullock had aleading role in The Lake House (2006). Other moviesinclued The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, AmericanSniper, and The Great Outdoors. More recent televisionproductions include The Mentalist, Weeds, and Hulu’sQuickdraw (2013-2014).

It offered film makers the freedom to create distantlocals such as colonial Massachusetts in The Maid ofSalem (1937), ancient China in The Adventures ofMarco Polo (1938), a South Seas island in Ebb Tide(1937) and numerous western locations including SanFrancisco in Wells Fargo (1937). The art of illusionwas mastered on the landscape.

The golden era of movie making at the ParamountRanch came to an end when changes to the studio systemprompted Paramount Pictures to sell the ranch. TheParamount Ranch found renewed life as a film locationwhen William Hertz bought the southeast portion in1953. An ardent fan of movie westerns, he built a

permanent western town utilizing Paramount Picturesold prop storage sheds. As a result, television companiesbegan producing westerns in the 1950’s at the ranch such

as Dick Powell’s Zane GreyTheatre, The Cisco Kid, andGunsmoke.

William Hertz sold theproperty in 1955. The Para-mount Raceway opened ayear later, and some con-sidered it one of the mostchallenging tracks in theU.S. It was closed 18 monthslater after two fatal crashesin December of 1957. Theraceway was featuredin The Devil’s Hairpin, filmed in 1957. Most of thetrack still winds through the

grass and oak woodlands of the park.

From 1957 to 1980, the ranch changed ownershipseveral times, but filmmaking continued. Afterpurchasing a portion of the original Paramount propertyin 1980, the National Park Service revitalized the oldmovie ranch. From 1992 to 1997, Paramount Ranch wasused as the setting for the television show, Dr. Quinn,Medicine Woman with Jane Seymour. Whether watching

filming or exploring the area, experience the drama andgrandeur of the Santa MonicaMountains.

Paramount Ranch, largely destroyed by thedestructive Woolsey Fire, is no longer standing. Butstate and local officials promised that it will be back.

“Let’s today begin to make that commitment to restorethis place,” said state Assemblymember Richard Bloom, speaking at a press conference to announce a newfundraising initiative to restore the Western film set inthe Santa Monica Mountains.

“It is so important to the history, not just right here ofthis spot and the Paramount Ranch, but really, to theindustry that it’s so much a part of,” he said.

Behind Bloom, the town’s Main Street lay in ruins, charred heaps of ash and rubble lying beneath twisted, burnt metal.

Miraculously, the town’s small white chapel, which hasbeen featured prominently in the HBO series Westworld, and the train station were unscathed, likely thanks to theirdistance from the other buildings and trees.

The Santa Monica Mountains Fund, a non-profit thatsupports the park, aims to have the set completely rebuiltwithin two years with backing from Hollywood studios, according to David Szymanski, superintendent of SantaMonica Mountains National Recreation Area.

The Aftermath of the WoolseyFire at Paramount Ranch...

Some adjustments will have to be made. “I think it’llbe a variation on what was here,” said Sara Horner, president of the nonprofit’s board, who noted that severalpeople in the entertainment community have alreadyreached out to help.

In the meantime, they noted that a temporary set willbe built on the other side of bordering Medea Creek sostudios can continue to take advantage of the area.

and the side pull (ain’t no way she was going to carry abit), became acquainted with bells and big balls being rolledtoward her, lights on her saddle pad and a trailer ride intoSky Country (her first trip off the property since she camehome). As soon as we unloaded, she showed her scaredhateful self. Russell walked her off from the group aftersaddling her little nasty behind (the writer said lovingly).

Sooner or later it was time to mount. Russell was notgoing to give up. Surely, he had a healthy fear and Iwouldn’t blame him.

I don’t know who has a good picture of the parade -hopefully - Elana as she was a trooper pooper scopperpicker upper and had a camera.

Casino is still a big gamble, but I solute the courage ofRussell Grace and the “try” in that little nasty mare.

We completed that very very long parade route withevery obstacle and distraction you can think of, from sirens, blinking lights, water in ditches, curbs, crowds of screamingjumping kids, huge fire pits a blaze, Santa announcing tothe crowd and blow up Christmas decorations includingabout a 8 foot snowman - more than one of those.

As this is the last article from me (for now :), it is thelast newsletter for 2018, it is the end of certain things andhopefully the beginning of a new attitude for my littlegamble “Casino.” Hats off to Russell Grace and all thehard work he has so far put into this mare that mightotherwise have ended up at slaughter.

See you on the trails... hopefully the New Years DayRide - Chili Potluck. See Flyer...
