PRESIDENT’S REPORT – August 2017

Hello Friends, On Monday morning we said good bye to our new Friends from Tauranga after what had been a very successful domestic journey over the week-end 11th to 14th August. What a wonderful experience it was. I need to say a big thank you to Beth and her team, Beverley and Peter who organised everything from our end, and to our wonderful hosts who made it all possible.

Another big thank you for the pot-luck dinner provided by the ladies of our club, what delicious food it was. Without naming names I saw several of our members going up for seconds so I think the diet went out the window that night. The visiting group was made up of a majority of relatively new members of FF Tauranga Club who have been recently recruited through a membership drive initiated by our old friend and ex Kapiti member, Reg Clothier. It was Reg’s idea to introduce them to a typical Friendship Force domestic Journey by visiting the FF Kapiti. I hope they were impressed by our clubs efforts to show them our lovely area with a trip down to Wellington where the weather behaved itself and they were blessed with a fabulous spring-like day. Considering the weather we have had since, they were very fortunate. The visit concluded on Sunday with a farewell function of food, fun and frivolity at the Ocean Road Community Centre (previously the Senior Citz). After the wonderful pot-luck dinner we played several indoor games which to my great relief went down extremely well. I have not seen such enthusiasm for a long time with both clubs joining in the fun with very little persuasion. At one stage I was about to wind up one game which I thought everyone had finished when one of our visitors asked me to continue the game until all their members had “had a go”. What fun, great old fashioned entertainment. My thanks goes Graham Tufnail who provided most of the equipment and did a great job looking after and storing the games. We even discovered a new comedienne, one of the Tauranga ladies had us all roaring with laughter at her great repertoire of jokes, she should be on the stage – in fact she was ! While we are on the subject of new members I would like to see our club run a recruitment campaign early next year. I am extremely interested in any ideas to recruit new members. Reg was successful in getting new members in by a postal campaign based on the “Taupo” model and writing to individuals. There is a cost to this due to new postage rates but I believe we as a club will need to invest some real money to increase our membership. Our club outward Journey to South Australia and Victoria begins on Sept 1st and 12 of our members will be joined by 2 from FF Nelson and 3 from FF Brisbane making a total of 17 ambassadors visiting Adelaide and Casterton. Beverley and I will be amongst them and I am sure you will join us in wishing them a safe and successful journey. Our club’s next outward journey is in April/May 2018, only a few months away. We will be travelling to Taipei and Nanjing in China. These are destinations our members indicated as their popular choice at the soup lunch in 2016. With a maximum of 15 persons, you need to let me or secretary Beverley know if you are interested in joining it. President Allan

A Definition - Did you know…..

“Procaffinating” – the tendency to put anything off until you have had a cup of coffee. (it works extremely well actually).

Sorry to say…..

FF Sao Jose de Rio and Sao Paulo, (Brazil) Inward are unable to visit as planned. Several of our members have expressed their disappointment, but knowing the problems Brazil is experiencing it is understandable. We have sent our very best wishes to them.

Visit of FF of Tauranga

Well, what a lively lot they were! We certainly enjoyed their visit. The visit to Wellington was a great success. We’ve been told that a group took the Back Bencher pub by storm and startled a group of

young men at a stag do. One of his friends approached our lot and asked if they had any marital advice to give to the anxious groom-to-be. There was a unanimous shout of “don’t”. Sue Harris has some great photos and two hilarious videos on our club Face Book page. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=kapiti%20coast%20friendship%20force

And a message from Ambassador Co-ordinator Erice Tomalin On behalf of Tauranga WBOP Friendship Force Club I wish to thank you and all your Club members involved in our recent visit to your Club. It was a most enjoyable weekend and a great opportunity for several of our new members to experience the fellowship of Friendship Force,

waiting for the start of the race. It turned

out that the horse racers were so skilled, the

pooper scoopers were under-employed.

The Aussie underarm golf required skill

and dexterity together with lots of

encouragement from the crowd.

Your committee had worked hard to provide such a successful Journey for us and the fun, fellowship and fabulous food on the final night was much appreciated. Sincere thanks to Beth for all the planning, the hosts and all your members involved in making us so welcome. In friendship, Erice Tomalin

Wellington Welsh Society Concert, Labour Day,Monday 23 October The Wellington Welsh Society are organising a concert that will be a highlight for the Wellington Youth Orchestra, many choirs around Wellington, Nelson and Australia - including 80 voices in the Youth choir - an amazing line-up of soloists and of course a large audience.

This concert is significant for the Welsh communities around New Zealand and the Pike River mine families, as it will include the NZ premiere of Cantata Memoria: for the Children of Aberfan and the Benedictus from The Armed Man, dedicated to the Pike River victims and families. In order to make the concert accessible for a large audience, they have kept the ticket prices low, with until 8 October discounts of 20% and 30% (for families and friends of performers). Discounted tickets are available until 8 October. Contact Eve Olsson who is happy to be the first contact if anyone wants to make a booking. Phone 293 8139 or [email protected]

How times Change! I can confirm this is a true story – at the AGM of another club (not an FF club) the Treasure of that club told the attendees that, when presenting a cheque to the Hotel for weekend payment, he was asked by the receptionist what she should do with it as she had never seen one before!
