The concept of subculture is a much-debated topic in the scholarly world.Immense interest in the topic emerged from theorists from the Birmingham CentreforCultural Studies in the 1970s, during the time when youth cultures started to becomemore visible and different from the mainstream =adult culture. In the introduction to the11first edition of The Subcultures Reader (1997),

Sarah Thornton defined subcultures as?groups of people that have something in common with each other (i.e. they shareaproblem, an interest, a practice) which distinguishes them in a significant wayfrom themembers of other social groups? (p. 1). Subcultures are most often described asemerging

from the subordinate and oppressed sectors of society. Much of what has been writtenabout subcultures describes them through their distinctive styles, and how thesepracticesexist in opposition to a dominant cultural ideology of the time.
