The Gatherer The RPL motif comprises two motifs – the ARC OF KNOWLEDGE which enfolds THE GATHERER. A prudent person gathers provisions in times of plenty, stores them carefully and in lean times, uses them wisely. He/she rests easy in the knowledge that energy spent in husbandry, hunting and harvesting is a good investment against lean times. This motif was chosen to depict the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. During your life, you have cultivated knowledge, invested in training, gathered skills, competencies, values and related work ethics. In correctly documenting your prior learning, you will reap maximum benefits. The aim of this Application Brochure is to assist you to apply your carefully gathered store of skills and knowledge to your career development on the road to a better future.

This RPL Application Brochure consists of three sections: Section A provides the information you will need to apply for RPL. Keep this section

and refer to it for all your questions.

Section B

is your RPL Application Form. It is the white tear-out section and consists of

the application forms and paperwork that you need to complete and return to

the RPL office. Always keep copies of all documents that you submit to

UNISA.

Section C contains general administrative information about UNISA. Keep this section

for further reference.

Section A Understanding RPL

A1 Introduction 1. What is RPL? Welcome to Recognition of Prior Learning! We hope that this will be the start of a long and successful learning path for you. As you have travelled through life you have gained many skills and competencies and undergone a wide range of experiences. RPL is a method of assessment which:

- evaluates and assesses your prior learning and skills - against an approved national standard, and - awards credits for unit standards, learning programmes, modules or subjects.

Learning that has taken place outside of formal education and training, regardless of where or when it was obtained, is valuable. RPL allows you to gain formal recognition for such learning and skills. You may have acquired skills or knowledge from training conducted while at work, experience you gained in the workplace, short courses or from community work in a relevant field. This learning will be measured against specified learning outcomes/syllabi and you may gain credit for this knowledge which may entitle you to: gain entrance to studies at UNISA, a subject credit or to fast track you to a higher qualification. 2. Who can apply for RPL? Adults of 23 and older, with at least 3 years’ current, relevant working experience, gained by: formal study, workplace learning, informal study for recreational/personal interest purposes, company/industry based-training, working with experts or life experience. You should apply for RPL if you feel that the prior learning which you have gained meets the requirements of the course/subject which UNISA offers and could earn you a course/subject credit. You should also comply with the admission criteria of the programme for which you wish to apply for RPL credit (certificate, diploma, under- and post-graduate degrees.) If you have not passed Grade12 (Std 10) with exemption and do not meet the admission criteria for a Unisa qualification, you have two options:

You may apply and/or register for one of the National Diplomas (vocationally oriented qualifications) provided that you are older than 23 years and have at least 3 years relevant experience in the specific field

OR You should enrol for the RPL Pre-access and Access programmes

Page 7: RPL_BROCHURE.pdf

RPL Application Brochure | 8

3. Pre-Access programme This programme gives mature learners who do not have a senior certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification the opportunity to study at Unisa. If you are interested in the RPL Pre-access programme you may contact the RPL office or Marici Snyman ([email protected]) or Eugene Nhkwashu ([email protected]) for an application form. 4. What to study? If you are not sure about which course of study to select, or which subject choices to make, you can do the following:

Consult the UNISA Calendars for a full explanation of the course, subjects, syllabus etc that you are interested in.

OR Consult a career counsellor at the Bureau for Student Counselling and Career Development.

Please note: Not all regions have a resident counsellor, but regional staff can assist you with Unisa subject information or direct you to their closest counselling service. It is important to identify the career you wish to pursue. If your needs and interests are not met in your current career, do not embark on further study simply because you already have knowledge and experience and might acquire RPL credits. People who make wrong career choices are seldom happy and content in their work. They often abandon their studies because of a lack of interest and motivation. You can also gain further information from: - Unisa Contact Centre: 086 167 0411

- Website: www.unisa.ac.za - Email: [email protected]

5. Why apply for RPL? RPL provides recognition of skills and knowledge you gained through formal, informal and non-formal education, for:

- Entry to a module or course at UNISA - Credit(s) for modules or subjects based on your prior learning - Advanced placement at a higher level in a certificate, diploma or degree programme - A reduced cost of studying - A shorter study period

The RPL policy at UNISA recognises any relevant learning gained through experience when measured against the learning outcome of the qualification and you therefore study only those aspects that are new and challenging. 6. The difference between RPL and CREDIT EXEMPTION/TRANSFER

If you wish to apply for EXEMPTION FOR STUDY UNITS/ COURSES completed at other universities, technikons, University of Technology, colleges and institutions of higher learning which lasted at least ONE YEAR, do not follow the RPL process. You should fill in an APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION OF STUDY UNITS form which is available in the UNISA Information Brochure, and submit this directly to UNISA with your registration form. Attach the required documents. Submit this to the relevant department. Do not submit this with your RPL application, as we do not accept responsibility for these documents.

REMEMBER TO KEEP A COPY OF THE FORM AND THE DOCUMENTS

Page 8: RPL_BROCHURE.pdf

RPL Application Brochure | 9

You should apply for RPL if you feel that the prior learning which you have gained:

• in the workplace • through on-the-job training • in company and industry-based training • through relevant training programmes • in community work in a relevant field

meets the requirements of the course/subject which UNISA offers and could earn you a course/subject/module credit.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE RPL APPLICATION FORM IN THIS BROCHURE 7. How long will it take? Are you interested in following the RPL process? You should allow yourself at least three months before your planned registration date. This will enable you to submit the necessary evidence of your prior learning to UNISA and allow us enough time to assess your evidence and provide feedback, before the next registration cycle. Consult the General Calendar or contact your nearest UNISA office for the dates of the next registration cycle. Should there be any subject(s) for which you know you will not gain RPL credits, you should register for it/them while continuing with the RPL process. In this way, you will not waste precious academic time while we are processing your RPL application. Once your have had feedback about your RPL credits, you may register for further subjects during UNISA registration cycles. However, we do recommend that all new learners enrol for a maximum of two subjects in their first year.

Please understand that RPL credits will only be granted after a rigorous academic assessment of your individual learner profile has been carried out in terms of nationally and internationally accepted standards and criteria. This process will take approximately three months.

8. What can you expect? Your knowledge, skills and competencies will be assessed by an RPL panel based on the relevant evidence you submit. Usually this takes the form of a challenge exam, an interview, a work-related project or a portfolio (which contains records of your experience, knowledge and skills). If you are asked to submit a portfolio, you will receive clear guidelines on how this is to be done. You may also be invited to a discussion with a panel of experts in your field to discuss your portfolio. This will occur in the language of your choice where this can be reasonably accommodated by UNISA. If you live outside Gauteng, this will be conducted telephonically. During this discussion, you will tell the panel about your experience in the workplace or other relevant areas; which learning has occurred and how you will show that you are capable in the areas in which you claim you are skilled. If you are found competent, you will be notified in plenty of time for registration and you may go ahead with the registration process. If you are found not yet competent in a certain learning outcome, you may be requested to do an access course, extra reading, etc and be assessed at a later date. Alternatively, you will be advised to follow the traditional route of study.

9. The Residency Clause Please note the following important information regarding RPL at UNISA. UNISA, as all other higher education institutions in Southern Africa, has strict guidelines governing the minimum number of subjects which you must register for in order to receive a certificate from that institution. This is referred to as the “residency clause” of that institution. The residency clause has certain implications for RPL candidates. Please study the following information carefully. When you have been assessed by the relevant RPL assessment panel (who may have recommended a challenge exam, portfolio, work-related assignment or other assessment tool) and your RPL assessment has been completed, you may be found competent in some or all subjects. Once you have completed your qualification, and possibly gained more than 50% subject credits towards it by means of RPL, please take note of the following options:

Option 1 Should you not wish to continue with the next higher qualification, but wish to receive your current qualification certificate at the end of your studies, you must ensure that you have registered for and successfully completed at least 50% of the subjects at this institution in the traditional manner.

The other 50% of subjects may be RPL credits. Example

An RPL candidate in BTech: Policing not wishing to continue with an MTech: Policing, but rather wishing to receive the BTech degree certificate at the end of his/her studies must register for and successfully complete 50% of BTech: Policing level subjects at this institution in the traditional manner. This must include Research Methodology, unless the candidate has a proven record of research and can submit a research report which he/she has written.

The other 50% may be RPL credits. Option 2 Should you wish to continue with the next higher qualification, you will gain

access to the relevant next qualification. This means that you will NOT be issued with the certificate relevant to the first qualification, but may continue with the qualification at the next level. Once you have successfully completed the higher qualification you will be issued with the relevant certificate of that higher qualification (of course once again bearing the residency clause stipulations in mind).

Please contact us at the telephone numbers as indicated on page 12 if you have any further enquiries in this regard.
