Quality of Life and Job Satisfaction

Over several beers Samoan and WOLLONGONG ~veterans" (eg ABMTPJohnny "Handsome" Mace) exchangedstories of previous hard fought battles.

But the day did not end there. Afternarrowly being defeated by MVNAFANUA in volleyball (three games totwo), the ship steeled itself for the "Inaugurallguana Run Ashore~.

Having adopted the scaly green lizardas a mascot the entire crew visited aChinese restaurant to eat, drink and bemerry in The Lizard's honour.

Ably assisted by CPOMTP Paul Smith(on exchange to West Samoa), the WOLLONGONG iguanas ensured all peoplethey met thai night enjo)'ed life '0 the full.

For the survivors the next day, anexpatriate cricket team, the WesternSamoan Wanderers, challenged the shipto a game. Unfortunately, the twospecialist tail enders. LSMTP DannyCarew, and the XO. John Byrne, weren'table to claim any likeness to Allan Border and couldn't manage the 32 runsrequired to win in the last over.

A most enjoyable visit complete WOLLONGONG sailed for Vila arriving fourdays later.

An idyllic tropical setting, all foundVila a reIning end to a busy South WestPacilic deploymcnl.

Perhaps the litting end to the trip wasfound on leaving Cairns; the navigator,SBLT John McGannon, took the Ut!leOrphan Annie award for his dhobi bag, with all his whites, left abandoned in thewashin machines at HMAS CAIRNS.

ARMED FORCESFEDERATION OFAUSTRALIA

Since the Armed Forces Federation of Australia was formed in 1985, public awarenessabout our conditions of service has increased considerably. People no longer think thatthe service person is highly paid; pays no tax; lives rent free; has a half day off onWednesday and six weeks annual leave. Never before has the attention of politicians

and bureaucrats been focused so much on personnel issues.

ArFFA has broughllhis aboul.

We have been active in highlighting problems and oHeringsolutions in:

We have already achieved successes in all 01 these areas.

ArFFA's ability to bring about further improvements to service pay and conditions isdirectly related to the number 01 members enrolled. This in turn rellects more than justinterest in our service conditions, but also in the profession 01 arms. The greater ournumbers, the louder the voice. Recruiting new members is, and will always be, vital to

our credibility and future success.

March a highlightof Samoan visit

Len alone to "show tbe nag" WOLLONGONG entered Nuka Alora,Tooga 00 Monday, May 27. A Qwet town, most were cootenl to samplethe pleasures or the resort island or Paogai Matu.

The resort was entertained for anentire day by ABETC Chad McLeod'sattempts at water skiing and CPOMTP"Bodgie" Wells' endless bush yams.

AU good things must end and so asMFredM. our ancient wharf trader of threedays, farewelled us with a toothless grin,WOLLONGONG slipped quietly awayfrom Tonga.

Some days later under a cobalt blue skyWOLLONGONG and West Samoan patrol boat MV NAFANUA steamed intothe glass-like waters of Apia Harbour.

On the wharf we were greeted by areception committee consisting ofRANLO, LCDR Caldow, the CO ofNAFANUA and three Samoan women; theIaner group presented the CO. XO. NO andCOXN with their first leis of the tnp.

For the remainder of our crew similaritems were to be found at the legendaryAggie Grey's and the ship's favouritehaunt, OliO'S.

A change from the nocturnal aClivitiesof Apia was the West Samoan Independence Day celebrations.

Rising at 0530, WOLLONGONG mustered at the parade ground leading amarch of thousands of Samoans.

Following a guard consisting of WestSamoan police, our ship's company wasdescribed by local media as "the linestexample of the Australian military~.

More traditions were upheld when thebranch of the Returned Services Association invited WOLLONGONG marchersback to their rooms.

Final score Army three,Navy two.

On day two the Armyand RAAF women drew 1all. In Ihe men's divisionNavy and RAAF startedtheir match in the middle ofa Sydney dOWIIJXlur.

Navy's left side wasworking well with ShaunTyrie and Mark Simmonsproving a handful for IheirRAAF opponents.

Navy's first goal was theresult of a change 10 theconventional penaltycomer with Geoff Bairdputting the ball into theback of the goal.

Our second goal was produced from excellent leadup work from the back linewilh Marty Karow, atfullback, and Blair Chalmers controlling play andmoving the ball to Simmons

some fine shooting by PeteZeck on the right wing.

From this point Armypulled out all stops and afreak goal from a comerbroughl it a goal closer alhalftime.

The second half provedmore lorrid than the fust, with several players fromboth teams given the yellowcard and receiving fiveminules on Ihe sideline tocool their heels.

The second Army goalcame after a Navy defenderdcliberately stopped a goalwith his fool. The penaltywas successful.

With scores level and 20minutes to play a breakagainst the run of play paiddividends for Army with itsIhird goal coming from across wide on the right side.

Handicap winner of theRandle Ford trophy wasSteve Day with a nett 69from Russ Smith (nett 71).

Winger Wayne Whitehad a fine day with the bootlanding five penaltie~ andconverting four of the tries.

One of the most promising aspects of the series wasthe performance of Nail)'and ASRU half BrettOuinn, centre Jones. lockRandall Petrie and fiveeighth Shaw-Jones.

Quinn confirmed his position as the Services' tophalfback, while the othersare all excellent prospectsfor the future.

Jones· defence is especially strong. while Petrie isa non-stop worker in bothattack and defence. ShawBlack, with his deft stepping and neat handling, should prove invaluable forNavy in coming games.

Other players to shineduring the series were propAndy Bray, breakawaysNick Sverdloff and Cummins and centre GlenArmstrong, who wasrestricted to a degree by thelack of opportunity.
