Eight tips for shoppingat antique weekendLooking for tips to shape a successful shoppingadventure at Antiques Weekend?Paige Hull (The Vintage Round Top) and Linda O’Neal (White ChurchHouse on the Hill) are longtime shoppers at the antiques extravaganza, andthey know the ropes.
Here are eight tips to get you on the right track.
1. If you can, go twice: shop early for the best selection and then againon the last day to get the best deals. If you can only go once, determine ifyou want best selection or best price.
2. Bring cash. Always ask the dealers for their best price.
3. It’s good to start early. You may see an item change hands two tothree times before the end of the show so be the first to buy it.
4. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
5. Go to Warrenton and shop the fields before Marburger begins.Enjoy the hunt in the fields for great finds.
6. Bring a large bag to carry “smalls” that you purchase.
7. When you see something you want, go for it. You may not pass thatway again, and if you do, the piece you spotted may well be gone.
8. VERY IMPORTANT: Bring a notebook to keep a list of vendorsthat you bought large items from so that you can get back at theend of the day for the pick up. The fields are large and can be confusing,so jot down the dealers name and cell phone number. Be sure to take downthe “field” or “show” and booth number.

Ninety miles west of Houston where the salt grass prairiejoins a swath of fertile farmland, half a dozen tinyTexas towns offer a respite from everyday urban living.
Here, picturesque cottages, farmhouses and small inns, some dating from the early days of Texas, are now restored asvacation rentals in stylish, even luxurious fashion, without for-getting their roots.
Creating a sleek, chic interior with rustic charm and mod-ern comfort is second nature to Paige and Smoot Hull whoown The Vintage Round Top, a house located just minutesfrom Round Top’s town square.
Her design philosophy: “Buy pieces that you love, onesthat speak to you, and don’t be afraid to mix the old with thenew.”
Their home’s interior is a combination of clean lines andreclaimed materials handpicked by Paige Hull, an inveteratecollector of industrial objects and vintage furniture.
“Our style is a mixture of modern with vintage touches; it’sa fusion of new and old,” she says.
In the living area the couple has refaced the ceiling withblue-gray and brown planks from the Habitat for HumanityReStore. Reclaimed wood also forms a backdrop for the bed inan upstairs sleeping loft.
Using old items – many with stories – the Hulls find cre-ative pleasure in making their own accessories. The diningroom light fixture was once a metal drum with a wooden arm.The tabletop – found in a field – traveled with a carnival andonce rested on saw horse legs.

The elegant master headboard is fashioned from a found archi-tectural piece with added antique tin panels, and the handsomedaybed is constructed from an antique door and shipping pallets.Sconces are made from cow feed sifters with added burlap fringe.
Displayed on the wall fronting the stairs is an art installation ofmultiple antique suitcases. For them, it represents people travelingin and out of the house. The coffee table trunk covered in stickersfrom actual travel was a $25 estate sale find.
Hull recommends spending a little more for a focal piecewhether it’s an old country store counter to serve as a kitchenisland or a hutch that is crusty and aged but perfectly houses pris-tine white ironstone pitchers and plates.
“One-of-a-kind décor allows your personality to shinethrough,” says Hull.
Best known of the designers contributing to Round Top’shomespun aesthetic is Rachel Ashwell, owner of the Prairie, a clus-ter of five buildings operating as a bed & breakfast and eventsvenue on 46 acres of private land.

The London-born designer dressed the properties in her hall-mark/trademark “Shabby Chic” style, which has gained widespreadacclaim as a line for Target.
For Ashwell, “the beauty of imperfection is at the core value ofshabby chic.”
Her newest book features some of the design work at her TexasB&B. It’s called Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie And Flea MarketTreasures.
Two more purveyors of down-home design are Joan and JerryHerring of Blackbird Farm. The couple owns three historic housesand the Red & White Inn on the square in Fayetteville.
The Herrings are adept at converting the well worn intoantique chic, and combining vintage items with special high-endtouches like Bella Note linens.
“People come to the country for an authentic experience, butthey want modern plumbing and all the amenities,” says JoanHerring.
Blackbird Farm is a 47-acre retreat between Ellinger andFayetteville with two cabins and a hall for weddings and familygatherings. Three miles from Fayetteville, the couple has a refur-bished log cabin dating from 1850 and the Sealy House. They arecurrently restoring a historic home on Market Street in Fayettevilleproper.
“People just seem to slow down and sleep late when they cometo the country. It's so quiet and relaxing, they don't want toleave,” she says.
Among the creative decor is a headboard made from an oldpicket fence and for humor, a vintage mannequin hand holds backthe shower curtain.
A collection of antique mirrors serves as an art piece in the Red& White Inn and a compilation of vintage art brushes hang in theSealy House.

Sliding barn doors give rustic appeal to guest rooms and whenthe couple takes down any walls on a property, they harvest thewood for bedside tables and headboards.
“For us, comfort is key. We like to surround ourselves withbeauty and feel that others enjoy that too. We’ve designed placesand spaces with our personal art collections and amenities reflect-ing the way we like to live,” adds Herring.
She is often asked about paint colors, bedding and even if thelonghorns on display are for sale. The two most requested colorsare Tradewind (SW6218) and Alpaca, a soft gray (SW7022).
Debuting this March, is a new guesthouse with spiritual pro-portions about nine miles north of Round Top It’s “The LittleWhite Church House on the Hill, designed by Linda O’Neal andRob Rossenbaum.
“It’s more than just a place to stay, it’s an experience,” saysO’Neal.
The house has a 20-foot cathedral ceiling with an antiquechandelier, stained glass windows and, outside, a steeple. Roomsare painted white with soft pinks and blues to create a soothingatmosphere.
Here, what’s outside is equally important to what’s inside.Eleven-foot double doors from Egypt open onto a vista of rollinghills, a pond, and the wide blue Texas sky, she adds.
