The TWG staff are excited about our first Spring Round-Up in Cleburne, Texas March 31 – April 7, 2017. With

great anticipation of a new experiences and new friendships made, the Texas Woodcarvers Guild is making this

move to Cleburne Texas. This is a great opportunity for everyone. Beginning with the show preceding the week

And two new Carving Club Awards have been added (see below). These are to encourage more club

participation. They are limited to TWG affiliated carving clubs only.

(1) A cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the TWG affiliated club whose members submit the most carvings

into the individual category competition. All carvings entered as a club entry will count towards this award.

(2) A competition is established to display the overall carving talent contained within an individual club.

Imaginative and skillful carvers display their work each year in the Guild’s individual carving competition. Club

talent is also observed and admired when viewing the individual wood carvings displayed on show tables. Thus

a new category is established to present individual club’s overall imagination and skill. A carving theme will be

declared by TWG (see below for 2017 theme). Each club will interpret the theme and determine how to best

represent it with an array of carvings and a display. Only club members may participate in the club’s entry. A

plaque and a cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the winning club that has the best representation of the TWG

theme. The winning carving display will be donated to the TWG to use as they see fit to promote and encourage

the art of wood carving. More details are contained in the State Championship Rules.

The Club Theme for 2017 is “A Western Town”.

The TWG website contains the Carving Competition Rules and all the details such as categories and awards.

Carvers are encouraged to go the website and download the necessary forms for entering a carving into the

competition. For convenience all necessary forms can be accessed, downloaded and filled out prior to the show.

Carving competition Judges for 2017 are Pat Moore and John Engler. Bios are on the TWG website.

VALERIE CLUBB

Valerie Clubb currently serves as the Texas Woodcarvers Guild treasurer and is seeking

a seeking a second term in this volunteer position. Valerie has been an active member

of the Guild for the past 10 years, enjoying the fellowship of the rallies and the wit and

wisdom of the many carvers and instructors. She has attempted all of the carving

disciplines at least once (except fish carving) and has never focused on one in

particular. This year - once again - she is determined to finish at least some of the half-carved projects on her

workbench. She lives in Granbury, Texas with her husband of 35 years, Jay, and his huge Weimaraner puppy

Leisl.

BILL MOULDER

My family and I came to Richardson, Texas 35+ years ago. Since then I worked in the

freight industry, ran my own company, managed a doctor’s office and properties and

when my wife retired from DISD and was hired by McGraw Hill Books to do in-services

work, I drove her in our motorhome to communities in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and

Alabama.

I have been a member of TWG for approximately 10 years. I have learned all types of different carving and one

day hope to be fairly good. I carve, make pens and do gourd art.

My greatest accomplishment in life is to have married my High School Sweetheart and have her put up with me

and the stuff I’ve done for 49 years.

I spent 20 years and retired from the US Army and found out that upon retirement I had to go to work for a living.

JAMES NELSON

James has been carving for about 15 years. He is a past member of the Austin

woodcarving club. James started the Kyle carvers and the Montgomery Co. Wood

chippers after moving to those areas. James has been running the hospitality booth for the

last 4.5 years.

NOVICE: Defined as a carver who has been carving less than two years. Class projects and rough outs are

permitted, however, originality will be considered by the judges.

INTERMEDIATE: Defined as a carver who is not a novice and has not won five First Place awards in this

competition level. Also, a carver cannot enter this level of competition if previously he/she has won Best of

INSTRUCTOR ASSISTED permitted only in category 375.

ROUGH OUTS permitted only in category 380.

Club Carving Competition: A competition is now established to display the overall carving talent contained

within an individual club. Imaginative and skillful carvers display their work each year in the Guild’s carving

competition. It can also be observed and admired when viewing the individual wood carvings displayed on show

tables. A carving theme will be declared by TWG. Participation in this competition is limited. Only TWG

Member Carving Clubs may enter this competition. The competition works like this. TWG selects a theme. A

club interprets how to best represent the theme with carvings. Individual Club members may carve one, but no

more than two carvings specifically for the competition.

For example… say the theme is circus. The Club would decide how they want to represent this theme. Perhaps

they would set up a display with clowns and a circus ring. Possibly the finished product would have several carved

clowns, spectators, a circus ring with tigers, lions and a ringmaster and a circus tent in the background. Each club

texaswoodcarversguild.com 11

will interpret the theme and determine how to best represent it with an array of carvings and a display. The Club’s

imagination and carving skill will be represented.

Competition Judges will consider presentation and originality along with additional criteria listed in A15 above.

The winning carving club would receive $250. The winning carving will be given to the TWG. The carving will

then be donated to an appropriate organization for display.
