Bruce Wins Third Championship in Four Years

Rotisserie Hockey League News Commissioner/Statistician Mike Poplawski Home 381-1289 Work 387-8579 Bruce wins!

Bruce has won his third Rotisserie Hockey League championship in four years by holding off a valiant late-season charge by Mike, winning by the closest margin in the league’s 7-year history–less than 1-tenth of a point! (The second-closest race was in 1988-89, when Mike beat Carlos by 6-tenths of a point). Mike nearly made up a 1.3 point margin with only 5 games remaining in the season.

Adding to the intrigue was a transaction that didn’t happen. Before the last week of the season, Bruce attempted to claim Darren Turcotte on waivers to replace Luc Robitaille. This transaction would have led to Bruce buying Robitaille’s hefty long-term contract out during this season, rather than having the charge applied to next season. This made sense as a first-place team (as Bruce was at the time) recovers more of their expense than a lower-placed team (as Bruce may likely be next season).

As it turns out, Bruce definitely needed the 2 goals and 2 assists Robitaille scored during his last two games. Turcotte did not play the last week of the season, making him ineligible to be waived. If he had appeared in either of Hartford’s last two games and not scored, Mike would

have won the league by 1-tenth of a point.

Bruce’s transaction would have been penny-wise and pound-foolish. His attempt to save about 2 dollars almost cost him 50 (not to mention the championship).

In any case, Mike was unfortunate to pass Bruce during the last segment even without the attempted Robitaille buyout. Sergei Fedorov, Eric Lindros and Gary Roberts missed ten games for Mike during the last two weeks of the season. Roberts was placed on the reserve list before the last week of the season (Mike signed free agent Mariusz Czerkawski), but it wasn’t enough. (That last sentence sums up the transactions of the last week of the season, by the way).

This was a rather amazing finish between two teams making aggressive moves late in the season to win the title. Congratulations, Bruce!

Bruce’s team showed an 11-standings point improvement over last year. Mike had the greatest improvement in the league at +34.

Chris (+6) can take heart in that his third-place team was more profitable than Mike’s runner-up team.

Carlos (-6) also had a successful season with another

low-maintenance team, and like Chris, made a tidy profit as well.

Doug (-6) finished over .500 for the fourth consecutive year and was the lowest-ranked team to turn a profit.

Grant (+18) met his goals of improvement and finishing ahead of the other three 1992/93 expansion teams once again.

Manuel (-28) had high hopes for winning a championship, after finishing second last season and running in second place at the end of November. Unfortunately, art does not imitate life and he could not overcome the loss of Pat Lafontaine as easily as the Sabres did.

Scott (+29) showed dramatic improvement but fell short of a .500 record in his team’s second RHL season.

Kelly (-39) had an extremely disappointing year, falling to

ninth after a championship season. The largest fall of any championship team was to fifth place, and no defending champion had ever finished below .500.

Wes (-35) pushed Kelly for the biggest drop from last year, falling from third to tenth, but may have done the most of any team to improve for the 1994/95 season.

Neil (+18) managed to turn his team over nearly 2 1/2 times.

Bret (-2) suffered from having his highest-salaried player (Mario Lemieux) only suit up for 5 games.
