"Transformational Development: Doing “Good,”

Well"

Steve FormanDirector of Business Development

Camino Global Foundationby John Neely

Steve spoke to Rotarians about the faith-Based work that theCamino Foundation is involved in as he spoke ofTransformational Development. "Transformational Developmentshifts the focus from the material to the relational and finallyspiritual life of the individual – true transformation. Humanity’sdevelopmental problems result from broken or mis-alignedrelationships which prevent the person from becoming all thatthey were created to be. Restoring these relationships starts withfostering the productive, creative capacity of each individualthrough entrepreneurship, microfinance and RedemptiveEngagement Business (REBs). If we want to do 'good' well, weneed to check our focus. Transformational Development reflectsour concern for positive change in the whole of human life -socially and spiritually.”

Steve presented the following:

1) Relief versus Development

Relief - short-term; a usual response to crisis; addressesmaterial, relational and spiritual needsDevelopment - long-term, response to systemic problems(usually evident for a long period of time); holisticapproach or response (Holistic is defined as theincorporation of the idea that the whole is more thanmerely the sum of its parts).

2) “You think really differently from the rest of the world.”

3) Asset-Based Community Development

Ask the right questions; NOT what do I think they may need?Or I will give them what I think they need, but not what theythink they need. How can I empower them to respond?

Steve used Toms, the shoe company, as an example of onedesiring to “do something good with the best intentions thatresults in less than positive consequences." Toms' business

model is known as the "one-for-one concept" model, which isreferring to the company's promise to deliver a pair of free shoesto a child in need for every sale of their retail product. Thecountries involved have included Argentina, Ethiopia,Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Rwanda, South Africa and the UnitedStates. The company uses word-of-mouth advocacy for much ofits sales, centering its business focus on corporate socialresponsibility. Part of this model originally involved a non-profitarm of the company called "Friends of Toms," that recruitedvolunteers to help in the shoe distributions in foreigncountries. Tom's trademarked the phrase "One-for-One" todescribe its own business model. Toms has received criticismfrom the international development community who stated thatToms' model is designed to make consumers feel good, ratherthan addressing the underlying causes of poverty and healthissues.

Steve went on to outline the Holistic Capital Model:

Human Capital - skills, trainingsNatural Capital - natural resourcesSocial Capital - market, rules (rule of law, property rights),trustFinancial Capital - moneySpiritual Capital - values

At the conclusion of his presentation, as a former Beaumontresident, Steve wished the community well in recovery from therecent storm, saying it was strange to be watching HurricaneHarvey from his home in Dallas, feeling like he should be herewith us.
