Training Council

After retiring with 25 years of active duty in the military, Chris Lamson has been the President and CEO of the International Safety Training Council in Nederland, Texas since July 2014. He is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.

Colonel Lamson's past military accomplishments and assignments are numerous. Ulitmately, he served as Chief of Staff for the 3rd Marine Logistics Group. He is a multi-decorated veteran.

Chris' presentation will raise awareness about a little known organization that has worked with industry and contractors for the past 25 years to reduce OSHA reportable incidents inside the plants by 95%, and how it plans to expand safety awareness in other industries and the homes in Southeast Texas.

June 8: Rotary Goes to Work!

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

In the initial years of this fine organization, Rotarians learned about one another and the various, diverse professions of the members by meeting in the offices, factories, businesses and firms of the club members. How about doing as one of the original members did back in the early 1900s?

Did You Earn Perfect Attendance?

It is always a very special day when we have the opportunity to recognize club members for contributions to the successes of the year. President Pat will be presenting awards and recognition on June 22. He will also recognize those who have earned Perfect Attendance for the year either through meeting attendance, and eClub makeup, serving on and attending committee meetings, or attending a makeup event. Did you submit a makeup for every meeting you missed?

As we assure that no one is omitted in the recognition process, please help us by reflecting on the year (July 2015-June 2016). If you deserve recognition, please call the Rotary office or send an email ([email protected]) saying you earned and deserve Perfect Attendance recognition. (Reminder: you must have been a member of the club for one full year to be eligible for this recognition.)

Rotary After Hours = Fun & Fellowship!

Despite the rain - and some very loud thunder! - a large group of Rotarians enjoyed the evening at J. Wilson's last Thursday, May 26. With a "kitchen connection," Chair Rob Glassey saw that the group had excellent service and some delicious appetizers throughout the night. Enjoy pictures by linking here.

CAN YOU HELP WITH A LOAN?

For a show-stopping good time with President Pat's Swan Song, the Director needs to borrow a keyboard. If you have one to loan for the day (and a rehearsal or two beforehand), please phone the Rotary Office at 842-1913 and let us know. It would be even better if you want to play too!

He writes:

Thank you so much for your support over the last 4 years. Last week, I graduated with undergraduate degrees in Business Honors and Accounting from The University of Texas.

I am enrolled full-time in the fall to complete my Master's in Professional Accounting, which I will complete in May 2017.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Beaumont for all of the support. I really appreciate this scholarship, which has enabled me to relentlessly pursue my education and a career in the sports industry.

With the assistance of this scholarship, I have been afforded many extracurricular opportunities, including internships with the NFL, UT Men's Basketball Team, Round Rock Express, and Australian Baseball League. I look forward to continuing my career in the sports industry post-graduation.

I really appreciate all that the Rotary Club of Beaumont has done for me during my collegiate career. Please pass along my gratitude to the Rotary Club.

Thank you,

Charlie

Your donations to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation in the form of "Service Above Self" are making a significant impact on the lives of others both here in our community and around the world. Please continue to be generous so the Club's many projects can continue.

PROGRAM REVIEWMay 25, 2016

"High Speed Rail Service for Texas"

David HagyTexas Central Railway

by Ted Moor

This past week we had David Hagy as our guest speaker. David is the Executive Director of Community Outreach for Texas Central Partners.

Texas Central is developing a new high-speed passenger rail system that will connect Dallas and Houston, using world-class technology to provide travel time of less than 90 minutes between these two cities using high-speed electric trains (that reach speeds of 205 mph). Further, these trains are not constrained because of weather conditions and typically arrive no more than 30 seconds late.

This project was envisioned and funded by a Japanese passenger train company. They looked for two cities that were far enough away that people would prefer not to drive, but not too far where it would be quicker to fly. Originally they had 97 “City Pairs” as potential sites for their new high-speed rail system. Many of the locations were dropped because there were too many hills. Others were dropped

because the land was too expensive, or there would have to be too many bridges. The Dallas- Houston route was chosen because of the relatively flat landscape, reasonably priced land and two large Metroplex areas.

According to their research, there are over 50,000 “super commuters” that travel between Houston and Dallas at least three times per week. In addition, both cities are expected to see a population increase in excess of 50% over the next 35 years. When this train system opens in 2021, they expect to have 400,000 riders per day.

This train project is a private investment which will cost approximately $10,000,000,000, provide 10,000 full-time jobs, 10,000 construction jobs and have a $36 billion economic impact. Mr. Hagy anticipates that once this project is up and running, they will begin to add additional routes to College Station and possibly Austin.
