third generation Rotarian, spoke with us about his vision for the district in RY 2016-17. Our effort will be in three areas – membership, foundation giving and publicity. His wife, Sharon,

also spoke with us about her DG Spouse project to improve literacy, asking for our support by donating to a local library or

New Member Proposal Greg Rabaey has proposed Tim O'Brien for membership in the

club. Tim has attended several of our meetings, and is interested in joining. Tim's proposed classification is Financial Planning. Our Board has voted to accept his application and now

I am forwarding this to our general membership for approval as specified in our bylaws. If no dissenting votes are received by

Monday, August 29, he will be scheduled for induction at a future club meeting.

Kenya Trip Orientation Nancy Lehmann-Carssow is holding her annual trip orientation

meeting at her home on September 11 from 2-4 PM. Part of this adventure will include a visit to the Rehema Children’s Orphange that our club supports. Trip dates for 2017 are July 7-25.

Fruit Sale Team Captains Needed We are looking for 10 team captains for the fall fruit sale! This is a great way to serve in a short-term leadership position with the

Nancy is still looking for volunteers to help with the Bullock Science Fair on Thursday, November 17th, from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. On Science Thursdays, students can drop in and explore the Bullock

Museum, see demonstrations, and participate in hands-on activities with STEM experts from Central Texas Discover Engineering. Science

Thursdays are FREE for all groups who have pre-registered for a Bullock Museum field trip. Every Science Thursday is different, and may include some of the following activities:

• Hair-Raising Experience with a Van de Graaff Generator

• Boat Race • Don't Sink the Cargo!

• Puff Mobile

• Float your Boat Support for the Bullock Museum's exhibitions and education programs

provided by the Texas State History Museum Foundation.

COUNCIL GRANTS CLUBS GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN MEETING, MEMBERSHIP

The 2016 Council on Legislation may well be remembered as one of

the most progressive in Rotary history.

Not only did this Council grant clubs more freedom in determining their meeting schedule and membership, it also approved an increase in per capita dues of $4 a year for three years. The increase will be

used to enhance Rotary’s website, improve online tools, and add programs and services to help clubs increase membership.

The Council is an essential element of Rotary’s governance. Every three years, members from around the world gather in Chicago to

consider proposed changes to the policies that govern the organization and its member clubs. Measures that are adopted take

effect 1 July.

The tone for this year was set early, when the RI Board put forth two

proposals that increase flexibility. The first measure allows clubs to decide to vary their meeting times, whether to meet online or in

person, and when to cancel a meeting, as long as they meet at least twice a month. The second allows clubs flexibility in choosing their membership rules and requirements. Both passed.

Representatives also approved removing six membership criteria from

the RI Constitution and replacing them with a simple requirement that a member be a person of good character who has a good reputation in their business or community and is willing to serve the community.

“We are at a moment in time when we must think beyond the status

quo,” said RI Vice President Greg E. Podd. “We must think about our future.”
