During January, clubs highlight the importance of the business & professional
life of each Rotarian. Special activities promote the vocational avenue of service.
Rotarians are encouraged to focus on: adhering to & promoting ethical standards in the workforce, including fair treatment
of colleagues, competitors, & the public; recognizing the worthiness of all
occupations; & contributing vocational talents to solving the problems of society &
meeting the needs of our community.
Venita Collins kicked off
this week’s segment of
Fellowship by sharing a few
notable facts about
January 15th:
- It is the 15th day of the
year, with 351 days then left in
2020.
- It is also the 3rd Wednesday
of 2020,
-and the 3rd week of 2020,
using U.S. standard week
number calculations.
-This week, we were on the 25th day of Winter. There were 65 days
left until Spring.
-The birthstone for this month is the Garnet.
-The Zodiac sign is Capricorn, the Fish-Horned Goat symbol and the
10th out of 12 Zodiac astrological signs. They are all about hard work.
Those born under this sign are more than happy to put in a full day at
the office, realizing that it will likely take a lot of those days to get
to the top. That’s no problem, since Capricorns are both ambitious and
determined: they will get there. Life is one big project for these
folks, and they adapt to this by adopting a businesslike approach to
most everything they do. Capricorns are practical as well, taking
things one step at a time and being as realistic and pragmatic as
possible.
Holidays and popular observances on January 15th include National
Hat Day. Headlines today: Florida man gets 90 days in prison for
spitting on a 67 year old man wearing a MAGA Hat! The “hole-iest”
food holiday of the year is January 15th – National Bagel Day! The
healthiest food holiday is also January 15th – National Booch Day!
Now, the urban dictionary describes Booch as a slang word for cocaine.
However, that is not what we’re talking about. Booch is actually short

for Kombucha, a fermented tea beverage full of probiotics that are
claimed to detoxify the body and build the immune system. Finally,
January 15th is Humanitarian Day in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
Birthday. This was started in 2009 and is different than World
Humanitarian Day which is celebrated in August.
Atte To close, Venita shared the following story about honesty:
A millionaire was on his death bed. As his last request, he asked to be
alone with his lawyer, doctor, and priest. “I know I’m dying,” he said,
“and I want to take my money with me. I’m going to give each of you
$5 million, and I want you to promise to bury me with my money.” A few
days after the funeral, the priest, overflowing with guilt, confided to the
doctor and lawyer that he only put $4 million back. “I’m glad you told
us,” said the doctor, “because I’ve also been feeling guilty. I only put $3
million back.” “You two should be ashamed of yourselves,” scolded the
lawyer. “Stealing money is a serious crime. Am I the only honest one?
Look at this,” he said, pulling out his check book. “I wrote him a check
for the full $5 million!”

Northeast Ohio, including the

Canton, and Mansfield. He attends
meetings on behalf of Senator
Portman for various legislative
matters, including those related to
education, healthcare, and
workforce development.
Josh is also responsible for

Josh started his career as a Regional Representative for Ohio
Treasurer Josh Mandel in 2013 and moved to Senator Portman’s office

the opioid epidemic, human trafficking, and the economy.
Regarding the opioid crisis, Senator Portman and Josh have

economic development projects near Lake Erie, since it is such as big

Finally, Senator Portman and Josh were instrumental in getting
SESTA (Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act) passed, shutting down a
major web page that was allowing children to be trafficked.
