What changes are you make to meet your “Why” in Rotary? What changes are you making as you endeavour to meet your Rotary moment and actually be the inspiration. I am in no doubt that the next six months will continue to be as inspirational as our focus will turn towards the following events: District Conference: Scheduled for 1-3 March – the 2019 conference promises to be an absolutely amazing weekend of profound Rotary knowledge, fun and fellowship for the delegates. We will embrace diversity and connect the community with fantastic, relevant and dynamic “hand-picked” key note speakers, blended with presentations by our club’s. And be prepared for the DG Gala Dinner which will be inspired by an International theme urge and humbly request you to register now and be included in the draw to win a BMW for a weekend, and remember the conference registrations closes on 22 February 2019. Rotary Quote of the Month

communities, and in ourselves.”

less fortunate through Rotary Projects. Remember “no one can do everything but everyone can do something” to help the less fortunate. The founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, said, “Of all the one hundred and one ways in which men can make themselves useful to society, undoubtedly the most available and often the most effective are within the spheres of their own occupations.” Vocational Service is the means for Rotary to develop and support Rotarians as they apply the ideal of service in their occupations. Vocation is the essence of Rotary. This is why Vocational Service is referred as the bedrock and the shining principle of Rotary” As we enter the New Year let’s also reignite our passion for Rotary and it’s awareness. If we are going to truly bring Rotary to others, we need to have a clear and cogent statement of what Rotary is all about. RI President Barry Rassin has continually stressed the new vision statement “together we unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” This is undoubtedly the core essence of what we stand for and I ask each of you to embrace this statement so that you can unhesitatingly give it meaning and make others aware of what Rotary does in the world at home and abroad. As we start a new calendar year, let us continue to reverberate RI President’s message of "Be the Inspiration" and let others know about it. There is no doubt that 2019 is going to be another challenging year for us all, but as difficult as it may be for us - it will be even harder for those less fortunate than ourselves. In July last year I asked Clubs to look at the needs of their local communities – to seek out avenues for service directed towards being the inspiration, celebrating your unique Rotary journey and searching your Rotary moment– and as I visit Clubs and read your bulletins I am amazed at the great humanitarian work the clubs are doing locally. Thank you for all you have done and please keep up the good work – noting that the need has never been greater! Already much planning has started for the new year and in this spirit, please join me to congratulate all our incoming club leadership team duly appointed. We need to assure them of our full support in their efforts to set us on our course for the future of our club, district and Rotary as a whole. As this newsletter goes to press DGE Ros Kelly is in San Diego at International Assembly where she will hear from incoming RI President Mark Maloney what our Rotary Theme will be for 2019/2020. We wish her all the best. However, in the excitement of preparing for the coming Rotary year let us not forget that we still have a lot of work to do this year. Our unique inspirational journey is to BE THE INSPIRATION. Thank you for being part of our Rotary family and for your passion, love, time and effort for Rotary. I reiterate that 2019 will belong to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. As we are One Vision, One Mission, and with One Rhythm, One Rotary. Jitendra Prasad District Governor 2018/2019

San Diego assembly message The International Assembly offers Elected Governors and Spouses the training, information and inspiration needed to prepare them for the next year. The goal is to get participants to expand their knowledge about Rotary, to be aware of the challenges and opportunities ahead of us, experience the organization, exemplify the ideal of giving and, above all, have fun. In Line With Rotary's new statement of vision, the assembly's program seeks to inspire Elected Governors and Spouses to unite people and act. In 2019-20, Rotary will start a new decade of humanitarian services with a new strategic plan. We challenge you to motivate Rotarians to increase our impact, expand our reach, broaden the engagement of participants and foster our ability to adapt. Also remember that we are Rotary - composed of Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation and the Secretariat, which together work to support our associates and increase the efficiency and reach of the entire organization. For the first time in Rotary's history, a select group of Rotaractors will join us in the last two days of the Assembly. Please welcome and connect with our Rotaract Partners to get in touch with different perspectives and share with them your rotary service experiences. At the end of an intensive and rewarding training week, we are confident that you will be prepared to help Rotarians and meet the goals you and Rotary have set for 2019-20. We know you will have great memories of the time you spend with us in the International Assembly, preparing to lead your Districts. We wish success in all your efforts next year and in the future! “Let’s work to strengthen Rotaract and smooth the transition from rotaract clubs into Rotary.” Rotary international President, Barry Rassin

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Object of Rotary (see above) is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the second object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster: • High ethical standards in business and professions • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations • The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions: • Talk about your profession in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ occupations. • Use your skills and expertise to serve a community. • Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your words and actions. • Help young people achieve their career goals. •Guide and encourage others in their professional development. By undertaking these activities, you bring vocational service to life. Vocational service is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world

FUN AND FACTS

THE HISTORY OF THE FOUR-WAY TEST

The Four-Way Test was conceived in 1932 by businessman Herbert J. Taylor, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, who served as Rotary International president in 1954-55. Having taken on the task of saving a company from bankruptcy, Taylor developed the test as an ethical guide to follow in all business matters. The company’s survival was credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary International in 1934, The Four-Way Test remains an essential standard against which Rotarians measure ethical behavior. It has been translated into dozens of languages and promoted by Rotarians worldwide.

ROTARY MY PASSION

Paul Casos Rotary Club of Ipswich City My introduction to Rotary was via membership of both Interact and Rotaract Clubs with my induction as a Rotarian occurring at the Charter Night of the Rotary Club of Ipswich City on July 18th 1980. My father was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Ipswich North and Rotary’s motto of ‘Service above Self’ was his motto. I was also aware that one of his fellow Rotarians, the late Dr Ian McKelvie, had a 100% attendance record which became the benchmark for my own commitment to Rotary.

38 years later I am still 100%. I recall when a fellow club member publicly described my 100% attendance as showing me to be nothing more than a ‘creature of habit’. It got a good laugh at the time however deep down I knew the statement contained some truth. Does my 100% attendance make me a better Rotarian than anyone else? The answer is an emphatic NO. It does reflect however a personal commitment I made on becoming a Rotarian. The positive is that I have enjoyed visiting my local clubs as well as clubs both interstate and overseas. I have even attended joint service club meetings on cruise ships held for the purpose of make ups. On one such occasion I was the only service club member present however I was still presented with an attendance certificate by the Ship’s Captain. Making up at other Rotary Clubs expands your mind as to their projects and activities. It also allows you to experience the internal culture of another club which can be fascinating. I recall attending a ladies night at a Japanese Club where the male members sat together at the front of the room and the ladies together at the back. Would not be acceptable here! The main fundraiser when I attended the Rotary Club of Boroko in New Guinea was their Sgt at Arms session. It was a large club at the time and each member put $20 in front of themselves and the session finished when each was fined the full amount. It was a long meeting! While RI today allows flexibility in attendance to encourage membership retention, I would also like to see making up at other clubs encouraged to promote interclub camaraderie as well as it being a practical example of the internationality of one’s membership. I am not out to set a record for 100% attendance however I encourage others to set a target for themselves that best suits their lifestyle and personal circumstance.

“Strong leadership, inspiration and vision are critical to the successful performance.” Rotary international President, Barry Rassin

“Friendship was the foundation rock on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together.”

My Road to Rotary- Paul Harris

ROTARY MY PASSION

Ajnesh Achal Rotary Club of Brisbane International I am deeply humbled to be asked by our DG to contribute to his “Talanoa” newsletter, and I hope you enjoy reading it. My first experience with Rotary occurred with the formation of the Interact Club when I was attending high school many many moons ago, back in my land of birth, the beautiful Isles of Fiji. Unfortunately the membership was short-lived due to my ongoing commitments with the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

However the ethics and activities of the Rotary Club did leave a lasting impression upon me. In 2017 an opportunity presented itself, a close friend of mine, also a Rotarian, invited me to join the Rotary Club of Brisbane International (RCBI). I applied and was honoured to be inducted as a member of this prestigious organisation. The Club has been actively involved in quite a few community projects such as hosting monthly food drives for the homeless and Xmas in July to name a few and I feel privileged to have been part of this. RCBI is indeed blessed to have members who continuously inspire others to make a difference in our communities whilst not forgetting to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie within the club which can be witnessed in our social functions and also experienced by others in our popular fundraising events. Personally, I have had some fulfilling Rotary moments but one that has left a deep imprint is when I was tasked with collating the list of wheelchair requests during our club’s “Fiji Wheelchair Project” in 2018. I am grateful to PP Raj for this opportunity since it provided me with some soul searching moments. I realised how spoilt for choice a fortunate few of us are compared to the real life problems faced by our friends in some developing nations. It is heart wrenching to hear about the compromises they make at the expense of their dignity and comfort due to their financial constraints or lack of proper equipment and facilities. As I read the specifics for each request to be included on the list, I couldn’t help but hear and feel the agony behind the silent screams and pleas of assistance from the recipients. With that in mind and with the assistance of PP Raj and HT Sarwesh, a fund collection drive was undertaken at my place of employment – Logan City Council and I am grateful to my colleagues who donated generously towards this cause. It was all worth it when seeing the smiles of the recipients with their wheelchairs – Mission Accomplished!!! And I hope there will be many more of these Before I finish, I wish to share with you a quote by Albert Schweitzer which reflects Rotary’s theme and will perhaps motivate you all to be the inspiration and to make a difference in people’s lives “Do something wonderful, people may imitate it” Thank you for your time. I wish you all a very prosperous and happy new year, may all your wishes come true and keep doing good for the betterment of all.

The Ship for World Youth Program

The Ship for World Youth program (SWY) is a prestigious international young leaders program, operated by the Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government. Past RYLArian and recent RYLA Coordinator in District 9630, Tegan Brooks, has been selected to represent Australia on this program alongside 11 other young Australian leaders.

Tegan will travel with the Australian delegation to Japan on 15 January 2019, joining 230 delegates from 11 other countries, including Chile, Ecuador, Greece, Solomon Islands, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu and Japan, to discuss global issues and participate in multi-cultural activities. The participants will then board the Nippon Maru ship to undertake studies in leadership, cross-cultural communication, project management and youth empowerment.

The Nippon Maru will embark on a 33-day journey from Japan to Palau (Indonesia), then on to two ports in Australia, before returning to Japan via the Solomon Islands. In each of these port visits, the young leaders will undertake institutional visits related to their chosen field of study. For the first time since 2011, the Nippon Maru will port here in Brisbane between 15 and 17 February 2019.

Tegan has been involved in RYLA in our District since 2015 and is passionate about Rotary, connecting people and sharing opportunities for our youth. On Sunday 17 February, we are looking forward to giving a big Rotary welcome to the Ship for World Youth here in Brisbane, hosting a BBQ lunch and sports afternoon as part of Rotary Day – further details to be provided in due course.
