Presidents Message for the Rotator for the 15th
November
Thank you all for a great meeting last night with
excellent attendance. I congratulate Liz and her new
Board, it is a strong Board and I am confident that 2017 –
18 will be a good year for our Club. Peter and Barb,
Merv and Glenda and Lionel and Yvonne were fantastic
ambassadors for our Club while they were in Charleville,
the organising team were in awe of what they achieved as
a team. Thankyou again, and also for giving us all a
greater incite last night. It was nice to welcome Marius
Von Zeppelin and look forward to seeing him some more
and of course our regular but always special guest
Joachim.
I am sure most of you are aware that RI, while holding
firm on who and what makes a Rotarian, has given Clubs
the flexibility to modify their by-laws to allow potential
members into their Clubs in different forms - Corporate
which we have already adopted, Associate or Family
membership. There was sufficient interest at the Board
Meeting for me to call a special meeting of your Board
for further investigation. Graham Jones has written a
paper which I will now forward to you all for your
information and feedback, if you wish, prior to that
meeting.
Your Board also decided to hold off on any Carousel
Fund distribution while Hugh and his Projects
Committee further investigate a joint venture with
Ashmore Club to build a Men’s Shed. It is a big ticket
item but with a lasting and public legacy.
Apart from our meeting calendar, please look at some
important dates elsewhere in the Rotator that I have listed
for the New Year which are important opportunities for
our Club. Please put them in your diaries, some of those
will hopefully involve significant Member involvement.
Next week will be another busy and exciting night with
the members of the Parkwood Club and hearing from
Hugh and Nancy and their Tanzania trip. Look forward
to seeing you all then, don’t forget to help Bill get the
numbers right.

total of 33.
Reports: Bill C advised that Parkwood Rotary is attending next week and he needs numbers and
apologies by Friday 11th

to sign up to attend the Paul Harris Recognition night Nov 22 and to advise apologies by Friday
18th
. This is a partner’s night also and both meetings will have two course meals.
Gary Wachter has the Carousel roster filled for Nov and has Dec and Jan calendars up.
Marion mentioned that our YEP student Josh and young busker Nathan were performing in
Broadbeach Mall on Saturday evening and seemed to be doing well.
Allan Thompson- Satellite Club meets Thursday morning. DG Michael I will be there. All
welcome.
Sergeant Gary Wachter did a great job of extracting monies from many people for various
misdemeanours. Poor Liz H , recovering from pneumonia, put one load of washing through with a
box of tissues. On her second try she included the TV remote.
Raffle Winner was visitor Marius von Zepplin and Heads and Tails Winner: Sahlee.
Peter O, Merv and Lionel talked about and showed slides of their recent trip with the District
Outback Lincs project to Charleville that was organized by DG Michael and Col Lee from
Ballina-on-Richmond Rotary.
Rotarians and partners as well as QANTAS staff and RACQ people worked on various projects,
some limited because access to properties was difficult. President Graham was unable to get to his
assigned property because access was blocked by 2 flooded creeks. However 11 properties were
reached during the period of the week.
Some painted the house of Mary who lives alone on her property 40 km from Charleville. The
house hadn’t been painted for 50 years.
15 November 2016 4
Our volunteers worked on sanding and repainting with 4”brushes a couple of rooms in the lovely
old Museum-quite hard work but enjoyed by all. Apparently they used up the full supply of No
More Gaps available in town.
The women did a great job catering for morning and afternoon teas and lunches- there were lots of
photos of everyone eating!
The QANTAS staff contributed significant funds and the RACQ people repaired vehicles and
machinery- all of which was much appreciated.
The camaraderie of all was inspiring-locals and volunteers alike.
There will be another visit next year in March for those able to make the trip.
Since most of the audience had never been to Charleville, it was most interesting to hear of the
hardships and the difference volunteers can make in the lives of farmers who have been doing it
tough through drought and now flooding rain.
President Graham thanked Peter, Merv and Lionel for recounting the story of their outback
volunteer experience so enthusiastically.
President Graham then asked members for their input into the proposed changes to District
boundaries in response to a paper from DG Michael. There was most support for Option 1 which
involves merging the whole of 9640 with the whole of 9630.
Close of meeting: President Graham thanked all for coming and closed the meeting at 7.50 pm.

Project 36-2009-10 # Indonesia continues to meet its current aims and objectives.
Rotary Club of Southport and Rotary e-Club Jakarta Gunawarman and Salvation Army, Indonesia have
adopted proposals to improve this project to support sustainability and better outcomes for students.
Salvation Army, Indonesia have conducted a comprehensive review of all children in their care and
adopted new guidelines recommended by Indonesian government for distribution of overseas aid. As a
result, children of SA Officers are no longer eligible; students over 18 years of age may receive funding
but must re-apply each year. It is proposed that Australian Rotary Club sponsors accept responsibility for
education outcomes for all students in a number of Homes rather than supporting individual students
scattered throughout Indonesia. We implore all Rotary Clubs to raise their commitment to minimum $550
per annum to achieve this goal. Salvation Army Homes supported by this project:

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION- THE BEGINNING
Though Rotary was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, it wasn’t until 1916 that the
idea of a Rotary Foundation was put forward. The Rotary International President
that year was Arch Klumph, a lumber man from Cleveland Ohio. He believed that
Rotary should move from doing miscellaneous community service to accepting
endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world. In response to that, the
Rotary Club of Kansas City Missouri contributed the first donation of USD $26.50
in 1917. After that, very little was contributed to the endowment fund.
In 1928, the Rotary Foundation was formally established as a distinct legal entity
within Rotary. In 1930, it awarded its first gift of $500 to the International Society
of Crippled Children.
When Paul Harris died in 1947 his request was that if anyone wanted to honour his
memory, they could donate to the Rotary Foundation. As a result, in 1948, the Paul
Harris Memorial Fund had raised $1.3 million from Rotarians around the globe, the
equivalent of $13 million to-day.
And Rotarians continue to do good in the world through The Rotary Foundation.
The Centenary of The Rotary Foundation will be celebrated next year in 2017 and
DG Michael Irving has asked that all Rotarians contribute at least the equivalent of
USD $26.50 -AUD $38- to The Rotary Foundation by the end of November,
designated Foundation month.
If you have not already donated, please see Marion or Treasurer Merv.

A lady advertises in the local paper looking for a handyman. A gentleman comes knocking at the door saying that he's
responding to her ad. "I have some overhead kitchen cabinets that need fixing" she says, but the handyman replies, "Sorry I
can't do that on account of my shoulder". So she asks, "Can you fix the tiles on the bathroom floor?" to which the handyman
replies "Sorry I can't do that on account of my dicky knee". Slightly frustrated the lady asks, "Well can you at least mow the
lawn?" to which the handyman replies, "Sorry I can't do that on account of my bad back". At this point the lady is getting quite
irate and says "You do know that I advertised for a handyman?". The man replies, "Yes, I'm a handyman". "But you don't seem
to be able to do anything, why do you think you're a handyman?" to which he replies, "I live just around the corner!"
I LOVE TO WORK with wood and decided to carve a rocking horse for our unborn grandchild. As parts
of the horse were shaped, my intentions became clear to my next-door neighbor. "You must be about to
have a grandchild," he called over to me.
"Our first," I replied, beaming.
"I have six," he went on. "After the first two, you'll buy something plastic at K-Mart."
Why do Handymen wear slip-on shoes?
You need an IQ of at least 4 to tie a shoelace.
Did you hear about the Handyman who wore two jackets when she painted the house? The instructions on the can said: "Put on two coats."
