Lions-Rotary Interclub Bowls: Millicent Bowling Club 16th February

“Rotary Skeer-daddles Lions. 1 Up!” “Lions Just Drew Short & Rosie claims it’s Allright!”

Bowling 16th February: The pictures tell the story but some Rotarians bowled woefully and

many Lions bowled well; victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat. Thanks for the

organisation and score-scrutineering by Rob Chambers.

General Business 23rd February>

-At the 2nd March Dinner Meeting Club Assembly will discuss the issues posted by Rosey prior to 23rd

February; and other issues as raised.

-Rotary Photo Art Show: Entries close March 1st-Encourage photographers to enter. The Italian Club

premises will be used for judging and help will be needed for packing and transporting to C&A. Workshops

will also be happening.

-Headlight Testing: Farm Supplies need reminding

-Rotary Park: on 17th March Antique Motor Cycles are gathering there.

-60th Birthday Celebrations: focus is on Mixing rather than long presentations.

-RYPEN April 7-9th. Students require nomination

- Rotary Youth Exchange: Ben Bayliss reckons he has enough enthusiasm around Robe/KIAS to host a stu-

dent July 2018 for 12 months: Millicent needs to decide whether it can host a student.

- Field Day: the Price of Chips to be increased to $4/bucket

- Strathdownie Monday 6th March: Numbers collected.

Dinner Meeting 23rd February: High School Students Presented re: 2 Science Experiences

Matt and Jack with Mr. Neville Crawford spoke of their Adelaide Uni/Waite Conoco-Phillips 2 Day

Science Trip. -2 Female Students (Sophie and Zoe) couldn’t present tonight.

-Experiences included Chromatography, DC Motor Building, Egg Testing, 2 metre Lego Tower Construc-

tion for group problem solving, Smart Cities, Plant Cell Walls and Soil Science.

-4 Workshops/Day.

-Matthew thanked Rotary and said he most enjoyed the DC Motor work (he hopes to pursue study and

work in the electrical trades). The Plant Accelerator and use of conveying belt through Rooms was interest-

ing.

-Jack also had an Electrical Science interest and additionally enjoyed the Waite Building design and Soil

Testing Science. Jack thanked Rotary.

-The use of young tertiary science students as ambassadors for the visiting students was a positive initiative.

-Discussion occurred about keeping options open for future occupational and science development.

-Lincoln College was again used for accommodation to familiarise the students with post-secondary experi-

ences.

- Neville highlighted the history and future of antennae/aerials as a good example of Scientific Progress

Jasmine Stringer: National Youth Science Forum-New Zealand.

- Students were organised into 6 groups of 28 students

- 16 modules available including Robotics (agriculture examples, self-driving cars, chess playing), Chemis-

try and Biology (ethanol out of wine, bacteri culture), Tech Options (TV NZ, Lotto Draws, Data Base for

insect and fungi, Food Tech: food manufacturing and pasteurisation)

- Extra-Curricula activity included Auckland Eating, Sight-Seeing and Beaches.

- Jasmine has really appreciated making new friends and connections across the ‘Ditch’ and will maintain

contact with via. Fb Group

- Jasmine has Biological Career interests but is keeping her options open with required Science and

Humanity matric subjects.
