DG Visit (cont. from Pg 1) · In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 421,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. (NHTSA)

· Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to be involved in a serious crash. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

· In 2011, 11 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported asdistracted at the time of the crash. This age group had the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted. (NHTSA)

While those numbers may sound like just statistics, they’re anything but. They could be parents, children, neighbors and friends from right here in Barnesville. There are too many sad tales of deaths and injuries that could have been prevented had drivers been paying attention to the road instead of someone or something else. No one is immune from the dangers of distracted driving. So please remember: One text or call could wreck it all. That is why the Interact Club is joining DG Alicia Michael in her campaign to end distracted driving. In the near future you will be asked to help the Interact Club get the word out about the Rotarians Against Distracted Driving (RADD) pledge campaign. Be on the lookout for this important information.

President's MessageThe Foundation Two years ago, our club experienced the largest surge in the participation ofFoundation Giving. It was incredible. Basically we were given a great opportunitywhich was to financially commit to helping our global and local efforts while beinggiven the opportunity to gain “Paul Harris” status for our gift. As you may remember, this was unique in the fact that in order to be recognized as a Paul Harris Donor, youhave to give at least $1,000, but during this campaign, Robert Hall was providing$500 in matching points; which only made your contribution $500. It is back! Any

member that will accept the challenge to contribute $500 will be given matching points by the district. This opportunity is only good through the end of November. Please talk to Chase Idol or someone on the board. I recently attended an Area Development Training and this project was one of the hot topics. There are clubs that have achieved the status of 100% Paul Harris, meaning every member. Although that would be a great accomplishment in the “hopeful” near future, I am just asking for at least 10 people to step up and make it happen.

The Mission Our DG Alicia Michael has challenged all of the Rotarians of District 6900 to become energized agents in our quest to “Light Up Rotary”. The secret agent ducks, the mustache, glasses, and covert plan gave us an opportunity to enjoy some entertainment but also reminded us of our commitment. Rotary is a way of life.It is an avenue for service, not only locally but globally. Our club has a rich history of being a club that truly embraces this idea. That is why I am so glad to a part of this club. Thank you for your prayers, cards, and well wishes. Although my goal was for the night of fellowship to be encouraging and memorable, it ended up being all of that and even more, ........ a blessing.

A Note from Anya I can’t quite believe I’ve been here in Georgia just over a month; the time has gone so fast! I am really enjoying my first few weeks at Gordon State College as my classes are so interesting and the people so friendly. I am studying American History, American Literature, Art Appreciation, Classical Civilisation and Philosophy. The cafeteria here is also fantastic (waffles on demand, anyone?). I have really enjoyed meeting Rotarians and speaking at different Rotary clubs; I have been lunchingwith the Barnesville club as often as possible and recently spoke at a meeting in Jackson. Going to the Conclave two weeks ago was really fun and a great opportunity to meet the other international GRSP students. I couldn’t believe the diversity of all the different cultures; the talent showon Saturday evening was a cultural experience in itself! However, I think my favourite part of the weekend was white water rafting down the Chattahoochee River (especially the part where we were allowed to float down on our backs without the raft – rivers are way too cold in England to do that kind of thing!). My other favourite part of the weekend was being driven to a breakfast diner in our host family’s yellow school bus – a truly American experience! Last weekend was one of my favourites so far as I celebrated my first ever Labour Day with my host family, The Traylors’. It was great to spend time with their families and see how a real American holiday was spent (I don’t think I’ve ever been to as many barbeques in one weekend! And trust me; we don’t have enough of them back at home).

Another fun thing I’ve discovered on my cultural experience is “tubing”. I first did this when on vacation with my host grandparents, Joe and Pat Edwards in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Let me tell you, if you have never been that, It. Is. Amazing (and possibly a tradition I should bring back to England?). I saw such beautiful views when hiking in the mountains, and some incredible waterfalls. Although I took lots of pictures, I really doubt any camera could capture how incredible the views actually were.

GRSP Conclave The Rotary Club of Columbus hosted the first official meeting of the GRSP class of 2014-2015. Morethan 50 students from 21 countries gathered together along with their host families and trustees. The weekend began with a dinner at the National Infantry Museum. This museum visit was one of the highlights of the weekend. After dinner, the group was entertained by a selection from the Army String Quintet. Saturday morning included many informational sessions for students and Rotarians. The sessions mainly focused on the GRSP requirements; however, the students were also

encouraged to begin getting to know each other. Host families and trustees were also involved with learning about their requirements. Saturday evening’s dinner was a formal eventwith excellent entertainment by the GRSP students. Each student was encouraged to participate by sharing a song, dance, or poem from their home country. Our student, Anya, sang with a group of students from England and other European countries. The culminating event was a white water rafting trip down the Chattahoochee River. Students and Rotarians used teamwork and humor to navigate the rapids. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely.

What is in our Future? There are several events coming up for our club. Mark these dates on your calendar! If you have an event you want to add to the list let a club officer know.

September 20, 2014, another Family of Rotary Social Event. The event will be held at Jim Granum's pool house following the Buggy Days Parade. Jim has agreed to allow us to park at his house before the parade and then go down and enjoy the parade together and then return to his house for a social event that will allow us to enjoy "food, fun, and fellowship".

November 8, 2014, Our Annual District Grant Project, Feeding Our Neighbors 5k and Fun Walk

June 10-14, 2017, Rotary International Convention in Atlanta celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Paul Harris Foundation. For more information, including a short video, see the web page.
