Two Weeks Ago… We watched a video presentation of a message from RI President D.K. Lee. He spoke about the power of being a Rotar-ian. “Alone, we might be able to help individuals here and there, to make small changes, to help in small ways. Together, our efforts are stronger. Together, we really can make a lasting difference on a global scale. Together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.” There were many projects that D.K. Lee could have chosen for his year’s theme and service emphasis, but he came across a number, the number was 30,000. That was how many children die every day from preventable causes. D.K. said, “At first, I thought it had to be a mistake. Perhaps, there was an extra zero in that number, if not two. Perhaps, the number was per month or per year. It was impossible, unthinkable, that in the 21st century, that 30,000 of our most precious children could die needlessly every day.. But there was no mistake. I asked, “How can it be possible?” The answers were as heartbreaking as the number. Children die needlessly of pneumonia, measles and malaria for lack of basic medicines, vaccines and mosquito nets. They die of diarrhea illnesses for the lack of packets of rehydration salts, that only cost 10 cents. They dies in the thousands every day be-cause they have only dirty water to wash
in and drink. They are killed by illnesses that become deadly in combination with poor sanitation and malnutrition. They die because of enduring poverty, a cycle that is not interrupted because their families have no access to education. They die because their needs are not met in the areas of water, health and hunger, and literacy.” D.K. continued, “Once I understood this and I understood the issues behind this terrible number, I knew what I needed to do. In 2008/09, Rotary will keep the service emphasis we have had in so many of our past years. The emphases that are solidly grounded in our knowledge and experience: Water, Health and Hunger, and Literacy. But, this year, I ask you to focus your effort in each of these areas on children, and on reducing the terrible rate of child mortality in our world. In 2008/09, I will ask you all to Make Dreams Real for the world’s children. This will be our Theme and my challenge to all of you.” D.K. went on to tell how the every Rotar-ian can help not only where the highest child mortality rate is in developing coun-tries, but also here in the states. There are children who die for the lack of seat belts, smoke detectors, no place safe to play. They also die because the parents can’t afford health care. D.K. closed with, “Our job is to work together, one club with another, to do what is needed. Our job is to Make Dreams Real. We will turn those dreams of a safe and happy childhood, a childhood that be-comes a long and healthy life, into a reality. Because, all the world’s children are our children. And our job is a simple one. It is saving lives with our hearts, our mind and
our souls. And if in 2008/09 everyone of us does, at the end of our year, we will have achieved something wonderful. Thank You.”
Last Week…Buddy Korman and arlen Tillis, co-chairs of programs this month, did an excellent job with setting up a wonderful off-site meeting. also a Thank You goes to John gallagher, who put it all together.
Submitted by Clint DeRonda Last week we had an offsite meeting at Covanta Energy, which was hosted by Steve Bass, GM. Covanta Energy is an interna-tionally recognized owner and operator of Energy-from-Waste and power generation projects. Covanta Energy’s Energy-from-Waste facilities convert municipal solid waste into renewable energy for numerous communities, predominantly in the United States. Mr. Bass has been involved in the op-eration of Covanta Pasco Inc. since it was opened on Hays Road in 1991. Within five years, the facility was at capacity and today it stays open 24 hours a day seven days a week. Noteworthy, our local plant has been recognized for having safety standards and practices in place that have been modeled and taught throughout the industry. Mr. Bass started his presentation to the Rotarians with a review of how garbage is collected and ultimately converted to either steam or recyclable metals. The process is as follows:• Garbage cans picked up curbside out-

Kiss and TellAccording to a news report, a cer-
tain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leav-ing dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back.
Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mir-rors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it had been
to clean the mirrors, she asked the main-tenance man to show the girls how much effort was required to clean the mirrors. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
There are teachers…and then there are educators.
If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn’t he just buy dinner?
The MiracleA catholic priest is driving down to
New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut . The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.
The trooper asks, “Sir, have you been drinking?”
“Just water,” says the priest.Looking skeptical the trooper asks,
“Then why do I smell wine?”The priest looks at the bottle does a
double take then looks up toward the heavens and exclaims, “Good Lord! He’s done it again!”

Hospice Legacy ProgramFrom Ginny Brown-WaiteDated September 1, 2008 Please thank your members of Rotary for funding the Hospice Legacy Program. As you know my husband, Harvey, passed away August 19th. Tonight I viewed the Legacy Disk he made. It was a wonderful tribute to my late husband. I promised him I would not view it while he was alive but would save it for a later date. He knows how difficult that was for me, but I did it anyway. Wow, I love it and the personal way it was done. Thank you, thank you.

Golf TournamentNext Week! Are you ready for an afternoon of fun and friendship? Well, it’s that time of the year again. Next week, as soon as we have lunch, we will all head over to Meadow Oaks for an afternoon of golf (at some holes, I’m not sure they call it that). John Brasher is once again chairing the event, making sure that all players, whether they are true golfers or not, will have an interesting afternoon. You really do not have to know how to play golf to join this tournament. It is a social event for everyone. The cost is only $30 and after golf you will enjoy a Pit Boss BarBQ and lots and lots of prizes.
Auction The Lighthouse for the Blind is holding it’s annual Auction on October 2nd. It will be held at the home of Bud and Sandy Brown. If you would like to donate anything to the Auction, please call the Lighthouse and
Charkay Suiters would be happy to pick it up. If you would like tickets, you can see Cami Austin or Bonnie Howard. If you’ve never been before, please get a ticket and go. They have so many fantastic things that they auction off including weekend getaways, sports memorabilia, antique items, golf and artwork, and it goes to a great cause.
PACE Center for Girls The PACE Center for Girls is holding their annual Fashion Show at Seven Springs Golf & Country Club on October 4th at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are just $30 and include a sit down brunch. Fashions are by Dillards and the seats went quickly last year. If you, or your spouse (that’s for the 120 non-female mem-bers of the club) are interested in attending, please see Bonnie Howard for tickets.
Paul Wysock Paul, who has been a member since 1966, is moving out of the state. He said he remembers when there were only about 15 members in the club. Wow, has that changed. He will be taking with him 42 years worth of memories of his friendships in this club. He will be missed, but we wish him much happiness in his new home.
Fire Truck Pull Stan Mills announced that the Marine Institute’s Fire Truck Pull is moving to be-come part of Bike Fest on October 11th, 2008. Stan said that the combined weight of the team cannot exceed 2500 lbs, so you can have a few really big people or lots and lots of small people. There will be t-shirts and prizes. If you are interested in putting in a team, or being a sponsor, please call the Marine Institute for more information.
Swing For Charity Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point is holding it’s 14th annual Swing For Charity Tournament on October 3, 2008 at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville. They are looking for players & sponsorships for the tournament that will benefit the United Way of Pasco County. If you are interested, please contact the Tournament Chairman, Steven Goldstein at 727-869-5494.
YMCA Cotee River Flats Classic SunTrust Bank is presenting the 6th Annual YMCA Cotee River Flats Classic on September 20, 2008. It’s too late to register for the Tournament, but not too late to get a ticket for the Captain’s Party at the Crab Shack Tiki Bar & Grill, on Thursday, Septem-ber 18th at 7:00 p.m. for a buffet dinner, silent auction, music and fun. Cost is only $25.00. Call Melissa at the YMCA at 727-375-9622 for more information.

side your home• Garbage trucks dump their contents into
the tipping pit at the Covanta facility on Hays Road. This pit is 35 feet deep and holds up to 10,000 tons of debris.
• A man-operated overhead crane then grabs the garbage with a large metal claw and drops the debris into a feed shoot
• Large hydraulic rams then force the garbage into the incinerator
• Due to the temperature within the incin-erators (275°F-300°F) steam is created in the boiler area
• A 19% solution of ammonia, carbon and finally lime is added to the steam to remove any metals.
• Steam is then pumped through a bagger and ash is collected. The ash is sepa-rated to remove ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, etc.), which is recycled, and the remaining ash goes into the landfill on site. Company wide, Covanta recycles 250,000 tons of metal each year.
• After going through the bagger, the steam enters a turbine and generates 30 megawatts of electricity each year. About 4-5 megawatts is used to self-power the facility and the remainder is then sold to Progress Energy. The energy that is sold is enough to power 22,000 homes.
After Mr. Bass’ review of the process the Rotarians were provided the opportunity to tour the plant and see everything firsthand. Despite the overpowering odor inside the tipping pit, it was a great tour. In addition to the obvious benefit Pasco County residents receive from the Covanta facility, it is impor-tant to note that they are a great community partner as well. Covanta donates funds each year to The Angelus, Chasco Fiesta and many others.
