E+P has extended the functions of
the LFS.tms product line for trans-
portation management solutions:
The two new modules Online Tour
Processing and Tour Planning com-
plete the existing TMS functions of
the warehouse management sys-
tem. The functions include, for in-
stance, freight cost and load space
calculation, shipment tracing (LogTrace), transit management, ship-
ping handling unit pre-calculation
and yard management. With the
extension of the product line LFS.
tms, the warehouse management
system becomes an overall solution
for managing the logistic processes
in the warehouse and on the road.
While third-party systems require
an interface connection, LFS offers
all functions for the management of
logistic processes in an integratedform and with an intelligent connec-
tion.
An overall solution instead of an ex-
pensive isolated solution: Today,
many companies are looking for
software that can manage all logistic
processes – on the road and in the
warehouse. Using the existing load
space calculation module, the users
have already been able to calculate
the optimal utilization of the truck
load space.

IT infrastructures are becoming in-
creasingly dynamic and complex. Es-
pecially for small and medium-sized
enterprises not wanting to make large
investments into hardware technolo-
gy, outsourcing is an important issue.
With the subsidiary EPX –Ehrhardt +

explains the advantage for the enter-
prises: “Managed service providers
are the new IT departments in smalland medium-sized enterprises. As an
IBM-certified MSP, we can help our
customers to reduce the costs for an
expensive infrastructure to a min-
imum. This way, they can focus on
their core business.”
Besides managed services, EPX is
also responsible for hosting and pro-
viding the computing power in the EPX
computer center. The users profit from
the high availability of the modern in-
frastructure without having to make
large initial investments. The offeris completed with cloud computing.

COLER trusts in the connected warehouse
management and tour planning offers of E+P C A S E S T U D Y
The COLER GmbH, an expert for
vehicle parts and repair shop
equipment, was looking for a new
warehouse management system
for their 32 sites in Germany. They
were looking for a solution with ahigh scalability that would allow a
quality increase for the customer
deliveries. They decided in favor
of the warehouse management
system LFS produced by Ehrhardt
+ Partner (E+P). The reason: in
comparison with other warehouse
administration tools, LFS not only
administers the inventory, but ac-
tively manages and coordinates the
warehouse processes. The starting
signal sounded in 2010 in the Biele-
feld warehouse. E+P integrated the
warehouse management system
based on the elaborated logistics
strategy and the training concept
“Train the Trainer”. The objective of
this concept was to train the COLER
employees during the first go-live
phase and enable them to autono-
transparency along the entire supply
chain.
“As a partner of the automotive indus-
try and a supplier of the most different
spare parts, we guarantee our cus-tomers on-time and high-quality deliv-
ery. In order to guarantee the highest
possible process and inventory secur-
ity, we had to restructure our logistic
processes”, explains Thomas Torke,
logistics manager of the COLER GmbH.
COLER – tradition and
modern trends since 1924
With more than 900 employees on 32 sites, COLER belongs to the top
players in the spare parts industry. Besides car parts and accessories for
the free market, the company also stores original spare parts for many
car manufacturers, offering their customers the full range of products.
In addition, COLER offers the complete assortment of repair shop equip-
ment and special tools. The company assists the repair shop owners in
planning new buildings, making reinvestments and buying new equip-
ment. The maintenance and repair services efficiently solves custom-
er problems the same day. The trade assortment is completed by the
product ranges for distribution, electric tools, household appliances and
telecommunication equipment for commercial customers and resellers.
The department of security technology manages and realizes projects in
all domains of building security.
ly, the vehicle parts expert decided to
implement the LFS-.tms product line
with the two new modules for online
tour processing and tour planning. In
2013, the starting signal sounded in
the Mühlheim-Kärlich warehouse.
Intelligently connected:
warehouse andtransportation management
“Compared to a simple warehouse
administration tool, the warehouse
management system offers
many additional features”,
Thomas Torke reports. “While
other systems only serve
simple inventory administra-
tion, LFS manages all goods
movements and employees and
intelligently coordinates the process-
es.” However, an overall optimization
consists of more than just managing
the warehouse processes. Transport
logistics play a decisive role in the
process chain. “Together with E+P,
we planned to optimize the entire
logistics chain”, Torke says. “This is
only possible when warehouse man-
agement and transport management
are closely connected. With LFS and
the two functional areas LFS.wms
and LFS.tms, we have found the suit-
able solution.” The advantage of the
new LFS.tms product line is that the
solution can be used as an integrated
part of LFS without additional inter-
faces. This means that all processes
can be displayed in the familiar and
user interface of the warehouse man-
agement system. The objective was
to efficiently increase the quality of
the customer delivery with the new
software products and to make all
processes traceable and transparent.
In the COLER group, 35,000 different

the system on
other sites. The
Bielefeld warehouse
was followed by the
sites of Kirkel, Mülheim-Kärlich,
Holdorf and Oldenburg. In 2014, the
central warehouse in Münster will
be connected to the system.
Process security along theentire logistics chain
In 2014, the central warehouse in
Münster will be connected to the sys-
tem. In order to maximize the pr ocess
security, COLER recently decided to
connect the E+P product line LFS.
tms for transportation management
solutions and to use the new mod-
ules for tour planning and online tour
processing. The pilot project was the
warehouse in Mühlheim-Kärlich, Ger-
many. The decisive advantages: LFS.
tms can be connected to the exist-
ing warehouse management solution
without additional interfaces and can
be operated with the familiar LFS
user interface. Only the combination
of warehouse and transportation
management solutions allows an
optimization of all processes. This
way, COLER benefits from maximum
“Experience shows that it is useful to
consider logistics as a closed process
and not to manage the logistic pro-
cesses using an ERP system. That is
why we decided in favor of the ware-house management system as a glo-
bal solution for the warehouse and the
road. With LFS, can remain competitive
in the future and we can benefit from
a significantly better quality of the cus-
tomer deliveries.”
Strategic roll-out planning
Before the integration, a logistics
strategy and a roll-out plan had to be
elaborated. In this process, the exact
requirements to the new warehouse
management system were analyzed
and the objectives were defined. In
2010, E+P started with the implemen-
tation of the system in the Bielefeld
warehouse, the first of seven sites for
which an implementation was planned.
This warehouse was quickly followed
by the sites in Kirkel, Mülheim-Kärlich,
Holdorf, Oldenburg and Trier. Recent-
parts have to be managed every day.
“For us, receiving a targeted and indi-
vidual solution from E+P was essen-
tial”, Torke explains. “LFS.tms and its
different modules allow us to select
the function that will optimally support
COLER’s everyday business”, Torke
says.
Two modules
for efficient tour planning
The Online Tour Processing module
allows a flexible and transparent tour
planning process and optimizes the
information exchange between the
headquarters, the drivers and the cus-
tomers. The data are made available
to the drivers, the headquarters and
the customers – in transparent form,
online and in real-time. Data recording
takes place during the tour with the
help of handheld computers. The tour
planning module offers functions for
planning tours efficiently by observing
restrictions, for instance in road traffic.
The tour planning module offers differ-
ent stages that build upon each other.
It includes options for manual tour pro-
cessing with three sub-functions for
frame tours, map representation and
tour optimization as well as options
for dynamic tour planning. These func-
tions can be adapted to the different
industrial sectors and the customers’
individual requirements.
Accelerated internal and
external processesThe connection of the LFS.wms ware-
house management solution and the
LFS.tms transportation management
solution allows an acceleration of the
internal processes at COLER and an
increased efficiency for the customer
delivery. Already during order consol-
idation, a command can be entered
in order to inform the transport man-
agement system about the location of
the items to be shipped. In addition, a
driver can flexibly take up other orders
when collecting the items in the ware-
house. When the driver recognizes that
goods that have not yet been allocated
to the current can be delivered on the
same route, the goods can be scanned
in order to allocate them to the current
tour. At the same time, the warehouse
management receives a request for
changing the order status. “In addition,
we use the system in a way that all or-
ders of a customer are collected and
recorded with a cut-off time in order to
pick the ordered items in a path-opti-
mized form. This means that we deliver
several orders for the same customer
in one process.” Shorter processing
times guarantee a higher customer
satisfaction. The vehicle parts expert
has to provide many different items in
stock. Here, LFS guarantees a high in-
ventory security, which is also import-
ant for stocktaking. The system’s high
flexibility also shows in tour process-
ing: As the processes in the warehouse
are connected to the processes on the
road, the drivers can optimize them
easily and autonomously. With their
handheld computers, they can always
check the current status of their orders.

The project in an overview
Set for the future: With the centralization of their warehouse
management with LFS, the Popken Fashion Group relies on a future-
proof system.
Flexible industries require flexible solutions: LFS can be adjusted to the
changing requirements of the textiles enterprise and allows the highest
possible transparency.
LFS securely manages the high throughput between 30,000 and
40,000 parts per day. Individual packing instructions are also observed
in LFS.
LFS also manages the high returns rate of almost 50%. For returns, the
system detects the resale value in order to make the goods available
for sale as quickly as possible.
The warehouse management system also guarantees the secure
handling of folded garments items and transfers all required
information to the split tray sorter.
A challenging project: The fast-moving industry requires a permanent
adaptation of the warehouse management processes. At short notice,
the new label GINA LAURA and the corresponding online shop were
successfully connected to LFS.
C A S E S T U D Y
7.3 million items – B2B, B2C and e-commerce – one solution
Multi-channel processes with LFS at the Popken Fashion Group
to be sent to customers all
over the world. The enterprise
also offers their customers a
24h delivery service. In or-
der to increase transparency
and to keep the processes
as lean as possible, LFS
allocates a shipment type
to every incoming order.
When order series are cre-
ated, the orders with the
same shipment types are
grouped. This acceleratesthe shipping processes.
Another important factor
for e-commerce is returns
management. 50% of the
goods ordered online are
sent back to the sender.
These goods have to be available for
other orders as quickly as possible.
Therefore, Ulla Popken has created a
zone for fast-moving items. Seasonal
items or frequently ordered items are
quickly made available for dispatch.
LFS detects the resale value of the
goods based on the sales figures de-
fined in the system. Returns orderswith a high resale value can immedi-
ately be used for the next dispatch.
Short processing
times with LFS
Every month, Ulla Popken publishes
a new catalog and offers the items in
more than 300 shops throughout Eu-
rope. In order to guarantee the timely
delivery of the new collections, short
delivery periods have to be observed.
Throughput times between two and
three days are the norm. In order to
guarantee the deadline compliance,
profits from the high-
est possible transparency in the
warehouse, shortened delivery
times and an efficient returns man-
agement.
Modern womenswear starting with
size M – This is the business model
of the textile enterprise Ulla PopkenGmbH. For more than 25 years, they
have been successfully selling their
products to their customers. And their
products are very popular, so that theholding uses three distribution chan-
nels: mail order trade, stationary trade
with approximately 300 shops and
franchising. The multi-channel strat-
egy is monitored in the central ware-
house in Rastede, near Oldenburg.
It has also been implemented for the
menswear label JP 1880 and the GINA
LAURA GmbH & Co. KG, which belongs
to the company group since 2012. In
the Rastede central warehouse, all
threads of Ulla Popken and JP 1880
run together. Expressed in figures, this
means a throughput between 30,000and 40,000 parts per day. In addition,
approximately 7.3 million items are
stored on a surface of 52,115 square
meters every year. In order to guaran-
tee the timely and correct delivery of
the items, a powerful warehouse man-
agement system is required. Before
the cooperation with E+P, the Popken
Fashion Group managed the logistic
processes of the different business
areas separately. “The former solution
could not offer us the required trans-
parency”, says Michael Ostermann, di-
vision manager for logistics at the Ulla
Popken GmbH. “We opted for LFS, be-cause the solution offers a high range
of functions and can be flexibly adapt-
ed to our requirements.” LFS manages
the processes for all business areas,
based on their different requirements.
These requirements are especial-
ly high in fashion logistics: There are
many items to be stored (so-called
stock-keeping units), short delivery
times, high returns rates and a high
share of seasonal items which make
professional warehouse management
essential.
Smooth processesin mail order trade
The most challenging distribution
channel of Ulla Popken is the mail or-
der trade, which consists of the cata-
log and the e-commerce business. The
challenge: Many small deliveries have
As a multi-channel company, the
Popken Fashion Group counts on
three distribution channels with the
fashion labels Ulla Popken, GINA
LAURA and JP 1880: mail order
trade, shop trade and franchising.
In order to optimize textile logis-
tics, these channels are managed
in one central warehouse. In the
first step, the Popken Fashion Groupoptimized their warehouse manage-
ment software for the Ulla Popken
GmbH. In the German central ware-
house in Rastede near Oldenburg,E+P implemented the warehouse
management software. The new
solution flexibly adapts to chang-
ing conditions in textile trade and
the resulting logistic requirements.
This way, the Popken Fashion Group
Ulla Popken also uses the LFS function
for creating order series for the station-
ary trade. In Rastede, the enterprise
uses a split tray sorter to which LFS
allocates the order series. Afterwards,
the goods are distributed to the singleshops. The warehouse management
system transfers the information about
the item quantities to be distributed to
the split tray sorter. “Currently, we only
use this picking type for folded gar-
ments”, Michael Ostermann explains.
This type of goods accounts for 70 per-
cent of the shipping volume. “We want
to further optimize our processes”,
Ostermann continues. “That is why we
are planning to connect a sorter sys-
tem for hanging garments to LFS in our
Oldenburg warehouse.” This way, the
manual two-stage picking process for
hanger goods can be omitted.
Transparent processes,
also during order peaks
In order to guarantee the highest
possible quality, almost every item
is checked before sale. “In the past,
the incoming deliveries often blocked
the goods receiving area, because
the items could only be stored after
passing the check”, Michael Oster-
mann explains. Now, a direct storage
is possible, because LFS can identify
the items at any time, which allows a
check after storage. This also stream-
lines the goods receiving processes, which is especially important in times
of high order volumes – like a season
change – in order not to lose track of
the processes. The franchise business
is also seasonally driven. This business
segment for instance includes enter-
prises that autonomously use the brand
names Ulla Popken or GINA LAURA and
run their own business autonomously.
Here, depending on the purchaser, spe-
cific requirements – like for instance
packing instructions – have to be ob-
served. These requirements can also
be controlled and documented in LFS.

More space and a reliable supply for production
LFS in use at Seeberger C A S E S T U D Y
Seeberger –
Visions leading to success
In 1844, Seeberger was founded as a family-owned enterprise. Thanks
to the long-time experience, the medium-sized enterprise has a long
tradition in all markets of the world. The product range includes nuts,
dry fruit and coffee specialties from one of Germany’s oldest coffee
roasters. All products are subject to strict quality control. The harvest-ing process is resource-saving and the products are gene technology
free. This way, Seeberger can guarantee their customers the highest
possible product quality.
A sense of tradition
since 1844: Founded
as a family-owned enterprise,
the Seeberger GmbH with head-
quarters in Ulm, Germany, today
delivers several thousands of tons
of dry fruit, nuts and coffee to cus-
tomers all over the world. Another
tradition of the South German com-
pany is working with the ware-
house management system LFS of
Ehrhardt + Partner (E+P), which
has been in use at Seeberger for
more than 20 years, controlling allmovements in the raw materials
warehouse.
In recent years, all signs have been
pointing towards growth. To be able
to handle the increasing goods and
production volume in the future, the
company decided to build a new auto-
matic warehouse. The special feature:
Using a bridge, the new building will
be connected to the production site
and the old warehouse on the other
side of the road. On this bridge, a driv-
erless transport system (DTS) guar-
antees the reliable supply for the 25production machines. Here, too, LFS
will ensure the entire material flow. Up
to 75 pallets per hour will be stored
and retrieved in the new Seeberger
warehouse.
Starting as a food wholesaler in 1844,
the Seeberger GmbH has developed
into a worldwide active brand for dry
fruit, nuts and coffee. So far, all raw
materials have been stored in one
of the 18,000 pallet bin locations
of the old warehouse. To be able to
handle the increasing order volume
that is expected within the frame ofthe growth strategy, the company
has decided to build a new high bay
warehouse and to automate all pro-
cesses. The entire material flow will
be controlled by the warehouse man-
agement system LFS.
Provider selection
“The objective of building a
new warehouse was not only
to create more space, but also
to guarantee a reliable supply
of raw materials for the pro-duction machines. This was not
possible before and the mate-
rial flow processes
were not optimal”,
Frank Bäcker, op-
erations
manag-
er of the
Seeberg-
er GmbH,
e x p l a i n s .
“That is why
we decided to
automate all
processes inthe new warehouse
in order to obtain a
smooth material flow.” The
decision in favor of LFS and E+P
was easy to make: The warehouse
management system had already
been in use at Seeberger’s old ware-
house for more than 20 years. In 2012,
a release upgrade was performed.
“This speaks for the quality, reliability
and consistency of the system”, FrankBäcker says.
Refrigerated and
automatic warehouses
The new high bay warehouse is 40
meters high and consists of two aisles
with channels of 14 horizontal and
15 vertical rack levels. In total, 700
different items can be stored on the
23,000 pallet bin locations in the new
warehouse. In goods receiving, the
raw materials are recorded in LFS
using radio frequency terminals. With
forklifts, they are taken to one of the
six hand-in points. From there, they
are transported to the high bay ware-
house.
In the warehouse, a fully automated
laterally guided shuttle system takes
the pallets to a buffer section for the
stacker cranes that can handle both
Europe and industrial pallets. The
stacker cranes move between two
aisles with up to 250 meters per min-
ute. The goods are allocated to bin lo-
cations in three different temperature
zones: On the bottom level, the prod-
ucts are stored at 5 °C to 8 °C. In the
zone above, there is a temperature of
up to 15 °C and on t he top level there
is a zone without temperature control.
Based on the master data, LFS can
already allocate a bin location to the
products in goods receiving and auto-
matically control the process.
Smooth material flow
The warehouse management system
and four driverless transport vehicles
(DTV) guarantee a smooth material
flow. The vehicles will connect the
new high bay warehouse with the
production site. When a production
Results in an overview
With the new construction and the intelligent LFS control for all
material flow systems, Seeberger was able to triple their capacities.
LFS guarantees the complete automation and the perfect connection
of all deployed systems (including the DTV and the high bay
warehouse).
In addition, Seeberger profits from a completely transparent material
flow and a reliable supply with raw materials for the 25 production
machines.
With the new system, up to 75 pallets can be stored and retrieved

order is created, LFS sends a tele-
gram to the stacker cranes in the
automatic warehouse. They will re-
trieve the required goods and take
them to the retrieval points. Here, a
DTV will pick up the pallet and trans-
port it across the bridge to one of the
25 production machines. “LFS has to
ensure the perfect interaction of the
different automated systems to keep
the production running”, Frank Bäck -
er continues. The retrieval process
has another special characteristic:
After arriva l and before storage, LFS
automatically selects pallets from the
raw material lot for a manual quality
control carried out by the laboratory
personnel.
When a lot has successfully passed
the control, a DTV can pick up the pal -
lets and transport them to the produc-
tion site across the almost 100 meter
long bridge. LFS allocates the vehicles
to the bin locations based on the or-
ders. The Seeberger employees use
their RF terminals to scan the goods
and take them to the next processing
station or place them on the respect-
ive machine for packaging. Thanks
to the automated processes and the
smooth material flow ensured by LFS,
Seeberger can store and retrieve up
to 75 pallets per hour.
High quality standards from
goods receiving to dispatch
Also during the packing process , the
weight and the packaging quality of
the goods are permanently checked.
Afterwards, the nuts, the dry fruit
and the other products are taken to
the finished goods warehouse with
forklifts, before being delivered to
the customers. Four to five trucks
full of Seeberger products leave the
warehouse every hour. “It has been
almost a year now since E+P imple-
mented the new warehouse – and we
can already say that we have more
than tripled our capacities and that
we profit from a transparent material
flow”, Frank Bäcker summarizes.
Within the frame of the Seeberger
2030+ project, further investments
are planned for this site. Currently,
E+P is installing a materials handling
system that will be connected to LFS.
It will connect all areas of the old
warehouse will be connected. See-
berger wants to combine all process-
es of the warehouse and the produc-
tion site in one material flow.

From theory to practice
Besides the theoretical courses, all
technologies can be tested on site
and in practice. Therefore, E+P offers
comprehensive testing options in the
logistics training centers with morethan 500 square meters of space
in Boppard, Germany, and in Dubai.
This includes radio frequency, Pick-
by-Voice or RFID. “The demand for
LFS consultants is very high, so that,
in the last months, the courses in the
LFS.academy in Boppard-Buchholz,
Germany, were fully booked”, Marco
Ehrhardt says.
Ehrhardt + Partner is looking for LFS
experts, but also for software devel-
opers and project managers. All infor-
mation concerning applications and
the current job and course offers canbe found under www.ep-jobs.com
and www.ehrhardt-partner.com.
C O N T A C T
According to studies carried out
on behalf of the HightechverbandBitkom, the Federal Association for
Information Technology, Telecom-
munications and New Media, Ger-
many has a lack of approximately
39,000 IT experts. Especially the
growth market of logistics perma-
nently needs new software experts
that know the current requirements
to modern warehouse management
and are able to cope with it. This
also applies to Ehrhardt + Partner
(E+P). Their warehouse manage-
ment system LFS is currently in
use by more than 500 customers all
over the world. In 2013 alone, E+P
realized more than 50 new projects.
On the market, LFS consultants are
more needed than ever. In this con-text, the new training concept of the
LFS.academy has been extended
and a new offer has been elab-
orated, including a new certification
program.
“Many of our customers are expand-
ing nationally and internationally and
need new employees with the required
know-how in operating LFS”, Marco
Ehrhardt, managing partner of E+P,
explains.
Currently, more than 200 LFS ex-
perts are needed for the IT and lo-
gistics market. Already today, more
than 40,000 employees work with the
warehouse management system. The
IT experts are trained in the logistics
training center – the LFS.academy – in
the headquarters in Boppard, Germa-
ny, and in Dubai.
New course and certification
program for LFS consultants
In the LFS.academy, E+P now offers
a new certification program with up-
to-date course contents. The courses,
which build upon each other, transfer
the knowledge LFS experts need for
their everyday tasks in logistics and IT.
The four-day basic course is intended
for employees working in the goods
receiving, picking or dispatch area.
The intention is to teach basic logistics
know-how and the operation of LFS.
The participants on an advanced level
can then choose individual course
packages for specific functions. This
offer is tailored to the needs of emp-loyees with a managing or supervis-
ing function in the warehouse. At the
end of the course, the participants re-
ceive a certificate as an LFS Certified
Solutions Manager.
On the expert level, E+P offers the
participants courses in which they can
deepen their knowledge and specialize
in specific functional areas. On this lev-
el, for instance, there are module cours-
es for Transportation Management or
certification options for logistics service
providers. IT courses for data base han-
dling, for the connection of new ware-house sites or for special IT subjects
complete the LFS.academy offer.
