RESEARCH ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS RESEARCH?

• Finding and gathering information about a topic or subject. • Putting the necessary facts in relevant order.• Learning new information about a topic.

PLAGIARISM

• According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means

• •to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own

• •to use (another's production) without crediting the source

PLAGIARISM CONTINUED

• to commit literary theft

• to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

• In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT PLAGIARISM?

• Cheating isn’t prosperous!• If you cheat, you will receive a 0!• This assessment counts three times and a 0 will

kill your grade!• I want you to do your best, not someone else’s

best!

WHERE DO WE BEGIN?

• Picking the topic should be first, but that isn’t true!• You must learn the skills necessary in order to

know where to go!• Your sources will be Discus, and Literary

Reference Center, and any information that was derived from the film(s).• With that said, again where do I begin?• We will begin with parenthetical citations.

PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS

• A parenthetical citation is the act of putting a reference or source in the contents of your paper or any such project.• Why do I need a citation? • Citations are needed because you must give

credit to the source or author!

PARENTHETICAL CITATION

* In the Notebook, the author writes about love and hardship that is showcased during a relationship between two lovers who have been in love since they were teenagers. In the book, Noah says, “ I have loved only one woman since I was young” (Sparks 2).

PARENTHETICAL CITATION BY 2 AUTHORS

• According to the author, “ John seemed most relaxed when we were out on his sailboat in Buzzards Bay, off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts” (Bradlee and Kennedy 72-76).

SAMPLE CITATION

• Kate Chopin was born in Missouri. Her parents had three children, but Chopin was the only one to live to an adolescent age ( Long 3).

SAMPLE NOTECARD FROM THE SOURCE

• Source 1•“Kate was one of three children born to her parents and the only one to live to mature years.”

Long, pp. 1-7, 2010.

BACK OF PREVIOUS NOTECARD

• Paraphrase the quote from the front and put it in your own words.

• Kate Chopin was born in Missouri. Her parents had three children, but Chopin was the only one to live to an adolescent age ( Long 1-7).

USING DIRECT QUOTES

• Direct Quotes cannot be the first thing written in a paragraph.

• All quotes must be introduced. Meaning, you must give an introduction of some sort to the sentence before using the quote.

INTRODUCING DIRECT QUOTES

• In the text Mindset, the author states that, “With the fixed mindset, one moment your partner is the light of your life, the next they’re your adversary” (Dweck 157).The author’s opinion is interesting because she is pointing out that everyone is different and that at some point one’s mind leads them into the direction that needs to be followed. In other words, we all follow the beat of our own drummer.

NOTECARD

Source1 According to the author, “ John seemed most relaxed when we were out on his sailboat in Buzzards Bay, off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts”

Pg. 72, 1978

NOTE CARDS

SOURCE CITATION (BOOKS/INTERNET)

• Title of the work • Author’s name • City of Publication• Copyright Date• Publishing Company name

SAMPLE SOURCE CARD

• Davidson, Jenny. The Explosionist. Harper Teen: New

York, 2008.

CITING AN INTERNET SOURCE

• An internet source is cited differently.• For the internet sources you should have used

Discus. From there you might have been given different cites, but make sure you cite each cite properly.• With Discus or Literary Reference Center, there

should be a name for the author or editor. Use the last name of the author or editor when doing a parenthetical citation. • Here we go!

INTERNET CITING

• When talking about, Bea Arthur, one will realize that not only was she a golden girl, but she was also a cabaret singer (Long 1-4 ).

WORKS CITED PAGE

• This page is included at the very end of your research paper. It is on a separate sheet of paper by itself. It must be titled Works Cited• Please follow all MLA rules about citing your

research sources!
