Rosin Dust
March 2014
Blue Mountain Old-Time Fiddlers Association
Connecting fiddlers - young and young at heart
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
In my February message I failed to report
that Kent and Carolyn Craig stopped by for a good
visit on their way home from a visit with their
daughter and family in The Dalles. It is always good
to see and visit with them. Besides being members
of the BMOTFA Kent is the Secretary/Treasurer of
the Gem State Fiddlers. He and Carolyn do a good
job there.
We have been skiing
and skating with Team USA
in Sochi, Russia. Also
crashing and falling a lot.
The US team has had their
ups and downs but lead in the
metal count at this time.
By the time you get
this Rosin Dust our first
fiddle show of 2014 will be
over in Enterprise. Read
about it in the Wallowa County news.
I have been encouraging 2 ladies, one in
Union who has a daughter and one in Cove who has
a little boy. They are taking lessons. I am trying to
get them committed to playing at the Union show. I
have heard the little girl and she is good. She is a
little frightened but doing good.
I will close for now and hope to see you at
some of the 2014 shows. Mark them on your
calendars now.
Drive safe and keep in tune.
Thanks for your support,
"You don't need an excuse to help others"
Denny Langford, President
BAKER COUNTY
Greeting's from Sumpter
I will start out by letting everyone know
that the show in Sumpter, is still
on. We have it every May on
Memorial Day weekend and
that weekend falls on the 23rd
and the 24th in conjunction with
the flea market. On the 23rd, we
have the pot luck dinner and a
jam session. On Saturday the
24th we have two shows; one at
1:00pm and the next one at
6:00pm. The last fiddle show in
Sumpter will be in September on the Labor Day
weekend. There will be no fiddle show on the 4th
of July weekend.
Bob Hunt, Baker County Director
GRANT COUNTY
Not a lot of rumbling going on
in Grant County, but there's no
shortage of
music. The Sunday jams
continue at the Out Post Pizza
Pub &Grill and sometimes at
the Chamber of Commerce just
a half block West of the Out
Post. Organizer Ron Phillips
(541-575-1927), continues with two daunting tasks,
completing his move from California and trying to
organize musicians to play at the two area senior
facilities. Good luck Ron, I'm sure the first task
will be a breeze. Can't say as much for the second.
Looking forward to the meeting and show in Union.
Grant County Director

MALHEUR COUNTY
It seems like the months go
by fast. Anyway we do play
a lot. We were at Wells
Springs and Dorian for
Valentine’s Party. Kent and
Carolyn Craig helped out.
On the first Tuesday of the
month, we play Nyssa Gardens and Presbyterian in
Ontario. Then on the first Thursday of the month
we play Wells Springs and the Dorian in Ontario.
On the second and fourth Saturdays we play in
Homedale, Idaho. Most Fridays we play at the
Ontario Senior Center, but on the third Friday of the
month, we play at the Caldwell, Idaho Senior
Center. On the third Saturday of the month we play
in Vale, Oregon at their new Senior Center and it is
really nice. I wish them all well as they have
worked very hard at it. The Nyssa, Oregon Senior
Center have their dances on the first Saturday and
the third Friday of every month, and the Payette,
Idaho Senior Center have their dances every
Wednesday night. All Senior Center Dances are
from 6-9pm. So we do keep busy! Till we meet
again. May God bless you all and never stop
playing music.
Malheur County Director
Vince and Doreen Bingham

MORROW COUNTY
It has been quiet and cold most of this month. Bill
West went over and played with the crew at Sun
Terrace in January. The Hermiston crew was going
to come over to Condon
and Heppner to play at the
assisted living places, and
have supper at the West’s,
but a foot of snow and
subzero temperatures put
the whammy on that. The
snow all left is about three
days. It all soaked in
except down in the roads where it couldn’t. The
snow all left is about three days. It all soaked in
except down in the roads where it couldn’t.
(Continued)
I haven’t done much of anything but pack wood and
sit by the stove. I gotta admit, it is a good job. Judy
is still helping at the hunting lodge three or four
times a week. We both had a bout with the crud,
but are over that now. On the 22nd
of January, we
drove to Caldwell, Idaho to see Judy’s brother,
Larry. He wasn’t doing a bit good and he passed on
two days after we left.
It’s about time for the shows to start. I
hope we can have good shows with lots of
musicians and listeners.

UMATILLA COUNTY
The smell of spring is striving to
discourage Old Man Winter
from knocking on the door and
rattling at the windows.
Someone said that they had
daffodils shyly appearing in
their yard. The new season is
spreading its wings with the
romping of calves, colts and
lambs in the pastures.
Some of the assisted living
facilities have been closed due to the flu, but there’s
always another to play at. We had to cancel playing
at Condon and Heppner due to snowy conditions.
On February 22nd
, Joan Gray and Mark Ludwick
played with the Washington Old Time Fiddlers at
the Columbia River Grange in Pasco, Washington.
On February 23rd
, Bobby Stevens and Bill West
joined us at the Sun Terrace for a good jam. It’s
always good having them show up.
I talked you Vic Fusselman the other day.
He said he was scheduled for back surgery and
asked for your prayers.

WALLOWA COUNTY
I was hoping to insert a report of the first
show of the season here, but have not been able to
get in touch with Pat Samples, director of Wallowa
County, busy lady that she is. I have heard reports
that the show was well attended by musicians and
listeners.

UNION COUNTY NEWS
The only thing that's going on in Union
County is the weather: Snow, rain, wind, water, ice
...the normal. I think we have had enough. I see the
cattle having calves and the wild animals need a rest
from the cold.
The BlueMountaineers have been active this
month. Pat and Nancy Bruce came to the Senior
Center February 12th and played and sang with us.
They also showed up for the dance Saturday,
February 22nd. It was good to have them come.
Nancy made me sound better and it was the first
time that we had all been together to play for couple
of months. We had the biggest crowd ever. 50
people faced the snowy weather and came to have a
good time dancing and visiting. Every one had a
great time. We appreciate our followers. Nancy has
her last treatment February 25th then starts March
12th on her radiation for 6 weeks.
We played 7 times this past week ending
with our End of the Month Dance at the Senior
Center. We are not professionals and we do make
mistakes but our listeners don't seem to care. They
have fun and so do we. That is what counts.
I hope you have your calendars marked for
the Union show and annual meeting on May 2nd
and 3rd. We need your RSVP ASAP so we can get
the head count to our Saturday morning breakfast
caterer. Also so we can get a handle on
our Saturday noon potluck and the Friday jam. We
need to buy things and count is very important.
Call 541-562-5055 or 541-805-5537.
The hotel is open and doing good. Their
number is 541-562-1200. Free parking at the High
school but no hookups.

Director please call Denny (541-562-5055). The
rewards are very good.
From the mailbag:
Greetings from Iowa, the center of the "Polar
Vortex" which gave us some record cold this
winter. I wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed the
sheet music of "Huckleberry Rag" this month. What
a deal this BMOTFA membership. You get a letter
from home every month and this one has sheet
music. We hope to see you and the fiddlers this
summer, we are coming to Wallowa for the
"Collin's Family Reunion". I am a bit nervous about
the trip after the last blow out on the trailer.
All for now, Jerry and Bess Timm.

The copy of a song in sheet music is a test for
a couple of months to see if people would like it to
continue. The song that is sent in by the members
must be strictly "Old Time Music". If it is not Old
Time it will not be accepted. There needs to be
some history on the songs and where they came
from and who made the song up. The first song
"Huckleberry Rag" was first written by Ivan
McDaniel in 1968. He recorded 4 songs on a 78 at
that time that he made up.. "The Huckleberry
Rag", "Black Velvet Waltz", "Glory Hornpipe" and
"Old Cajun Tune". I would like to publish Old Time
Music that is hard to find, or not published
elsewhere. The Huckleberry Rag has become very
popular in several areas, and is not possible to find
on the internet, so it really fit the bill nicely. This
time, we are featuring Judy’s Waltz by Bobby
Stevens. He gets lots of requests to play that tune. I
hope that you enjoy it.
