THE MEANING OF THE ROSARY

The word Rosary means "Crown of Roses.” Our Ladyhas revealed to several people that each time they saya Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose and thateach complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses. The rose is the queen of flowers, and so the Rosary isthe rose of all devotions and it is therefore the mostimportant one. The Holy Rosary is considered a perfectprayer because within it lies the awesome story of oursalvation. With the Rosary in fact we meditate themysteries of joy, of sorrow and the glory of Jesus andMary. It's a simple prayer, humble so much like Mary. It's a prayer we can all say together with Her, theMother of God. With the Hail Mary we invite Her to prayfor us. Our Lady always grantsour request. She joins Her

prayer to ours. Therefore it becomes ever more useful, because what Mary asks She always receives, Jesuscan never say no to whatever His Mother asks for. Inevery apparition, the heavenly Mother has invited us tosay the Rosary as a powerful weapon against evil, tobring us to true peace. With your prayer made togetherwith Your heavenly Mother, you can obtain the great giftof bringing about a change of hearts and conversion. Each day, through prayer you can drive away fromyourselves and from your homeland many dangers andmany evils.

It can seem a repetitive prayer but instead it is like two sweethearts whomany times say one another the words: "I love you"...

The Blessed Holy Father John Paul II on October 16th, 2002 with theApostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae on the Most Holy Rosary has added5 new mysteries of the Rosary: The Mysteries of the Light.

History Of The RosaryThe Rosary has been a major influence in RomanCatholic thought for over 500 years while paving theway for a greater understanding of the mystery ofChrist celebrated within family prayer.

The Rosary is the tradition-distilled essence ofChristian devotion in which vocal and mental prayerunite the whole person in effective and pur-poseful meditation on the central mysteries ofChristian belief. The Rosary thus joins the human

race to God through Mary whom God chose from all time for the specificpurposes of mother and intercessor.

The historical development of the Rosary begins with the desert fathersand their need to find a system to ease their laborious and repetitive prayerlife. It is generally agreed by scholars that a system for counting repetitiveprayers began with the Hindus some nine centuries before Christ. Prayercounters such as rocks, sticks or notches in wood were employed toensure that the proper number of prayers were recited. Over time, countersand psalms were united into a "three groups of fifty" format (Na tri coicat)so that "fifties" could be used for personal and/or penitential prayer.

The fifteenth century provided the development period for the many facetsof today's Rosary. During this period the Dominican influence with theRosary grew and was fostered through both fact and legend. Although theDominicans were not the sole originators of the Rosary, their influence inthe growth, devotion and spread of this prayer cannot be denied. It wouldnot be inaccurate to call them the principal promoters and defenders of theRosary through history.

The fifteenth century saw the Rosary begin its development into the familiarprayer form we know today. The Our Father came intact from the Gospel ofMatthew. The Hail Mary developed from the scriptural greetings of Gabrieland Elizabeth to Mary in Luke's Gospel, plus a popular exhortation in useby the laity of that period. The Glory Be was used as a common doxologyfrom the earliest of Christian times when praying the psalms. The SalveRegina, a later addition to the Rosary, states all relevant medieval themesabout the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its affiliation with the Rosary came aboutthrough popular practice although its precise origin within the devotion isnot known. The Apostles' Creed along with the rosary pendant were alsolater developments, being added to the Rosary only in the earlyseventeenth century.

Spiritual Fruits

The rosary is presented both as a “schoolof faith” and a “school of charity.”Meditation on the mysteries of salvation isto lead to conversion of heart and change ofconduct. Contemplation on the mysteries isessentially a loving act of gratitude throughwhich the heart is “filled with love...hopeenlarged, and the desire increased for thosethings which Christ has prepared for suchas have united themselves to Him inimitation of His example and in participationin His sufferings.” Attentive considerationof the “precious memorials” of ourRedeemer leads to “a heart on fire withgratitude to Him.”

The rosary, the popes teach, is also meantto influence society as a whole. Severalpapal encyclicals speak of the socialconsequences, or the effects on society, which meditation on the mysteries of the

rosary could produce. The holy and powerful life of Jesus Christ is to bea real antidote and remedy for the errors afflicting society. Our Lord’sexample and that of His Mother are brought before our mind’s eye to beour encouragement and the sure path through life’s joys and sorrows. We must recall the command of Our Lady at her apparitions, both atLourdes and at Fatima, that we must pray the rosary for sinners.

All of the popes have earnestly desired that the Holy Rosary should berecited especially during the month of October with increased devotionand with the utmost possible zeal, both in the churches and in homes. They urge that the Christian people should be led by its recitation tounderstand the dignity, the power, and the excellence of the HolyRosary.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead allsouls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy!
