Witnessing Forgiving Loving Helping Igniting Teaching Evangelizing

Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps our Church to encourage and provide the

opportunity for tomorrow’s priests to discern their vocation. When a priest is ordained…

when a person becomes a deacon or lay minister – your gifts have helped in their formation.

“I know firsthand how important the Catholic Ministries Appeal is. It helped to support my formation

and gave me the freedom to really focus on my studies. Now as a priest in the Diocese, I feel blessed that God has chosen me to make the Body and Blood of Christ present on the altar and to bring

that gift to the people, bring God to the people – the same people who helped to bring me to this

point by their support.”

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life.

Thank you!

Dear friends,

As we all know today, ”recycling” is a common practice. Our Lord

once said that “The scribe learned in the Law can bring out of his

storehouse things both old and new.” I composed the following article

some years ago. With some minor modifications, I place it before you

again for your consideration.

The traditional liturgical calendar gives us three oddly-named Sundays before Ash

Wednesday with their numerical Latin names: Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquage-

sima (meaning simply the Seventieth, Sixtieth, Fiftieth days before Easter). Today is the

first of them.

If we’re not forewarned, Lent will just suddenly creep up on us unprepared; and most

of us will be scrambling for “things to give up.”

Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953), one of the most famous Catholic writers of the last century,

wrote not long before his death: “We sit by and watch the barbarian. We tolerate him. In

the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence; his comic

inversions of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refresh us; we laugh. But as we laugh

we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond; and on these faces there is no smile.”

On this Septuagesima Sunday (roughly 70 days before Easter) and three weeks from

the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday; I lay before us “the barbarian” of whom Belloc

spoke.

Who or what is he/she/it?

It is the spirit that is literally “inverted” in the root sense of the word: it turns things

inside out. It is the spirit that makes the odd-ball the normal, the insane the sane, the wild

and undisciplined the true sage; and the virtuous, the loyal, the hard-working figures of fun

and pity. Respectability” becomes a term of contempt; the “rebel” is the hero of every tale.

Mockery and the smirk are the barbarian’s trade-mark. The barbarian has a certain

“roguish” charm and just enough truth in his words to make them palatable.

Society laughs along, titillated at the “tweaking” of its own norms and the

“stuffiness” of authority.

History records that in the 1780’s in France, the theatrical “hit” was de Beaumarchais’

plays about a certain “scamp” named “Figaro” whose attitudes and antics mocked and

poked fun at the foibles of the aristocracy. The author was amazed to see that his biggest

audience was that very aristocracy that tittered and laughed at their own way of life. The

plays were in fact amusing and provided material for operas such as Mozart’s charming The

Marriage of Figaro and Rossini’s comic Barber of Seville. Yet, as in Belloc’s quote there

were other “faces” that watched, waited, and did not smile. Within a few years those very

men and women who laughed at barbarian Figaro went to the guillotine in their thousands.

As Belloc warned, we trifle with the barbarian at our own peril.

Page 7: Roman Catholic Church of St. Matthewsmrcc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/feb17_201_smrcc.pdf · 2019. 2. 14. · February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Roman Catholic Church

February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

The ultimate barbarian is in fact the Evil One, the Devil; and he has a bit of an accom-

plice in each human being; and many others (witting or not) today in the entertainment ,

media, academic, and political worlds.

Too many have surrendered to him; for it seems so “modern” to do so. Civilization is

hard, barbarism is easy. This barbarism of today is in the small things first; then the big

things.

We see the signs of the barbarian all around us in every day life. In the increasingly fre-

quent use of obscene and vulgar speech in the media and in everyday life. In the lack of re-

gard for sexual purity, chastity, and self-restraint that is turning a child with two married

parents into a vanishing breed, as whole sociological entities and neighborhoods seem to

consist of rootless males and “baby mommas” whose children seem to have little chance of

escaping the same fate.

We see the barbarian in men no longer “gentlemen,” women no longer “ladies.” In

the crass, the loud, the drunken, the abusive, the pornographic; and finally, as it always

ends, in violence and death. For in the background of barbarism, always, there is blood: the

blood of the beaten, the murdered, the raped, the abused, the addicted, and the aborted.

We see the barbarian even in the churches sold and turned into “condos” and night

clubs; convents and novitiates into cooking schools; the sanctuary lamps extinguished in

places where once men and women knelt in silence before Him who abode there. We know

there is no joy, no mirth in Hell. The Evil One grimly goes about his business. There is no

laughter in Hell. Yet, as the Scriptures tell us there is laughter in Heaven: “He who sits in

the heavens laughs.”

Perhaps the joke is on the barbarian after all? It is those who fight against the barbar-

ian and “all his empty works and promises” who will share in that never ending mirth of

Heaven. This upcoming Lent might be a very good time to look at one’s life and see where

the hidden barbarian might lurk and drive him out with that Divine and True joy that re-

sounded from the first day of Creation with our Father God’s triumphant cry “It is

good!....very good!” It is always when barbarism seems to be victorious when The Barbar-

ian overreaches himself. For he has no sense of humor, only mockery: which is not the same

thing.

As it says in the Church’s liturgical tradition: “Let us commend ourselves, and each

other, and all our lives to Christ our God…for He is gracious and a Lover of Souls!!!...To

thee, O Lord…to thee!”

God’s blessings,

Fr. Hewes

About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies

There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy:

The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a “full Mass,” it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Commun-ion after a proper spiritual preparation.

The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, read-ings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above.

PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT cele-brated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday.

A NOTE ABOUT WINTER WEATHER

In the weeks to come, while we try to manage

snow and ice removal as best as our own re-

sources, as well as those of a professional com-

pany can provide; we simply cannot guarantee

that the entirety of the parking lot and sidewalks

will be dry and free of any risk under any and

all circumstances in winter weather.

Please use prudence and

caution when the conditions are

snowy or icy. It is better to stay

home in bad conditions, or to

come to a later Mass, rather

than risk injury.

Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program Month Five ~ Developing Baby

Your spiritually adopted baby weighs over one pound now. His mother can feel him moving now. Before he was too small for her to feel. Although he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the out-side uterine wall and dent it -- the inside wall of the uterus has no feeling. We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby's mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

The Parish Office will be closed.

Y.E.S. ~ SENIOR NEWS Meetings are held every Thursday after the 9:00 AM Mass except on luncheon dates. Please join us.

The mini-snowbirds are home. The rest will not be back until March or April. Lucky them! I don’t want to say that it’s been a pretty good winter so far, so I won’t. I don’t want to tempt fate. I’m sure that you all have heard the terrible ruling in New York on late term abortion. I still can’t forget the sight of all those women clapping and cheering as if they just won the lottery. Virginia is not far behind. This past summer some of you saw the film Gosnell. It is not a documentary but a true story of the doctor who killed more babies thru abortion than anyone in history. I heard that it’s been released to DVD just this week and I will obtain it for viewing at one of our YES Group meetings. Those who have seen it say that it is a film that must be seen. The date and details to follow. I would like as many as possible to attend. Everyone is invited. The What Am I Gonna Do With That? Bingo will be rescheduled to a later date. Our prayers go to Lois McCarthy on the sudden loss of her husband Jack. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for our church, our country, police, firefighters, the military and for all those who come between us and danger. God bless America. See you in Church, Pat

You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in Your book! How precious it is Lord,

to realize that You are thinking about me constantly! Psalm:139

My Dear Parishioners, Dr. David Teng is a Parishioner and a Pediatrician at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. I am grateful that I have known this out-standing man for many years. Prior to his working at Cohen, Dr. Teng was working at Columbia Presbyterian and Good Samaritan Hospital. Each year he volunteers to treat the sick children in Haiti. You might know Dr. Teng’s wife, Allison. She is the RN who has volunteered here for many years in our Summer Religious Education Program. She is well loved by the students and staff. As you can see, the Teng family does so much to help others. Dr. Teng sent us the information that follows: Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you about St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Haiti which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It has the highest rate of infants under 5 and maternal mortality in the region. Nearly 10% of the children die before their 5th birthday, largely of treatable illnesses. One out or four children are moderately to severely malnourished. 138,000 die of preventable diseases each year. Widespread poverty has led to young children to be 15x more likely to die from diarrhea or pneumo-

nia than from HIV/AIDS. HENCE, IMPROVEMENTS IN PEDIATRIC HEALTH ARE VITALLY NEEDED. In 1954, a Priest, Father William Wasson, started a Program in Haiti called, NPFS - Petites Frères et Soeurs - Our Little Brothers and Sisters. Initially, it was going to be a home for orphaned and aban-doned children. However, when they realized the large number of children who were dying from treat-able illnesses, they decided that it would be better to build a Hospital. The Hospital opened in 1989 and was called St. Damian’s Pediatric Hospital. This year, there is a benefit for this Hospital at the Milleridge Inn on March 23rd from 6-10PM. If you can’t make the benefit, you can mail a donation for this very worthy cause to the following address. St. Damien Pediatric Hospital Fund, 134 North La Salle St. Suite 500 Chicago, Illinois 60602. Include on the check memo-Helping Hands for Haiti. Or you can give the check to me and I will give it to Dr. Teng. For more information, you can go to the website nphusa.org/h4h. Please pray for these children who in Dr. Teng’s words are “special and so badly in need.”

Sadly, many of our wonderful volunteers have become very ill. We are deeply grateful not only for the service they have provided but also for their generous spirit and dedication to St. Matthew’s Parish.

What is needed? We need volunteers to assist with the Ministry of Consolation at our Funeral Liturgies. We also need volunteers to assist

with the food pantry and/or with our Mommy and Me Program on Monday mornings.

There are many reasons why it’s good to volunteer. The following quotes attest to this. For many of these quotes, the authors are unknown.

Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more but those who are giving more. Volunteers don’t get paid not because they are worthless but because they are priceless. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time: they just have the heart. The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning for a happier life for ourselves. Helen Keller Life’s most persistent and urgent question is this. What are you doing for others? Martin Luther King

Even though these quotes give us many good reasons to volunteer, Scripture tells us that “the Son of Man came to serve not to be served.” Here at Matthew’s, we volunteer to serve others as to try to imitate and to follow our Lord more closely.

If you are able and willing to volunteer, please call me at the Parish Center at 631-499-8520 Ext. 124. Thank you and God bless you, Sr. Kay McCarthy

The sound system in our Church is very good. However, if you are hearing impaired, you may be missing out on God’s Word. If so, we are trying to determine if you think it would be beneficial for you to use hearing assistive technology during Mass. If you are interested, please complete the form below and return it to me by Feb. 18th. This information is necessary, as we will only make this investment if we know that these devices are needed and will be used. The Parish will pay the cost of installing the system. However, because of hygiene and sani-tary reasons, we would ask you to purchase your own personal device ~ a head set and receiver, which costs $190. If this cost presents a financial problem, please call me - 631 499-8520 X124. Once you purchase it, you will bring it with you every time you come to Mass.

Benefit for the Sick and Elderly Sisters of St. Dominic Each year, my Religious Community has a benefit to support our many sick and elderly Sisters. Most of our Sisters are elderly; our median age is 80. We also have many Sisters who are over 90. We even have three Sisters who are over 100. We take a vow of poverty so my stipend from St. Matthew’s goes directly to Amityville to support these Sisters. If we work and/or worked in a Church related Ministry, we aren’t eligible to re-ceive a pension. In addition, most of our Sisters entered Religious life directly from high school, mak-ing their social security checks very minimal. Hence, it makes it very difficult to care for these Sisters who led holy lives, worked tirelessly and sacrificed so much to serve God and His people. The benefit for these Sisters is being held on March 2rd. I will sell chances in my office up to and including Thursday, Feb. 21st.. The 1st prize is $1,000, the 2nd prize is $500. Each chance is $1 and a book of 12 chances is $10. If you prefer to donate to my Community, please make out your check to Sisters of St. Dominic. I will make sure that the checks will go to Amityville. I am aware that many of you are very burdened with your own expenses and donate to many other worthy charities. I would never want to impose on you. I am grateful for any contribution and especially for your prayers. Likewise, be assured of my prayers for you and your intentions. Thank you and God bless you for always being so very good to me and for always responding to the requests I make for others, including requests for families in need.

Thank you for thinking of those in need. At present, the parish does not need clothing, toys or baby items. Please do not drop off any of these items or clothing in the vestibule of the church.

However, the Life Center is in desperate need of winter clothing for children. The size needed for boys is from 12 months to 3T.

The size needed for girls is from newborn to 3T. Please bring baby items directly to: The Life Center at 1767 Deer Park Ave. in Deer Park.

The phone number is 631-243-2373.

Thank you and God bless you, Sr. Kay McCarthy

Focus on Religious Freedom www.cffor.org

"Conscience is the most sacred of all property." James Madison, 1792. Alert!! Conscience Protections for Health Care Workers at Risk

New York: Calling New York State's newly expanded abortion law "ghoulish", N.Y. Cardinal Timothy Dolan said, "Those who once told us that abortion had to remain safe, legal and rare now have made it dangerous, imposed and frequent." The new law "allows for an abortion right up to the moment of birth; drops all charges against an abortionist who allows an aborted baby, who somehow survives ... to die before his eyes; mandates that, to make an abortion more convenient and easy, a physician need not perform it; and might even be used to suppress the conscience rights of health care professionals not to assist in the grisly procedures."

The law proclaims "Every individual has the fundamental right: to choose contraception or sterilization to have an abortion

The term "fundamental right" is extremely significant since it incorporates the constitutional law principle that these "rights" cannot be regulated except in the most narrow way possible.

Therefore, the language of the law poses a direct threat to religious freedom and conscience rights. It gives the state the authority to deny licenses to individuals and institutions that do not provide or co-operate with abortion.

The United States remains one of only 7 of the 198 nations in the world to allow abortion on demand past 20 weeks. These are North Korea, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Canada and Netherlands. Research shows that unborn babies feel pain at 20 weeks and most even earlier.
