3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 27, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners,

The Optional Memorial of Saint Blaise falls on Feb-ruary 3rd, and if this day is a Sunday, like it is this year, the memorial is not officially celebrated dur-ing Mass. Liturgically, a Sunday in Ordinary time takes precedent over a Memorial or an Optional Me-morial for a saint. We will, however, confer the Blessing of Throats next weekend (February 2/3) at both the Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday Mass at both Our Lady of Hope and Saint Mary. The bless-ing can be given by a priest, deacon, or lay person, and it takes place after the homily and the general intercessions. The words of blessing are recited while two unlit candles are held next to a person’s throat: “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The person receiving the blessing says, “Amen,” and if the person giving the blessing is a lay person, he or she does not make the Sign of the Cross while giving the blessing. Historically, we know that Saint Blaise was a physi-cian and the Bishop of Sebaste, Turkey. He was martyred in the year 316 during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. The legendary “Acts of Saint Blaise” were written four hundred years later, and many miraculous stories were included in this book. During the persecution, Saint Blaise took refuge in a cave and cared for the wild animals. Hunters even-tually found him and took him back to the emperor for judgment. As he was being led to jail, a mother set her only son at his feet. The boy was choking to death on a fish-bone, and Saint Blaise cured the child. Unable to make Saint Blaise renounce his faith, the authorities beat him with a stick and be-headed him. Because Saint Blaise cured the choking boy before he was martyred, Saint Blaise is invoked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the throat. This blessing is very near and dear to me since I had tongue cancer and throat surgery 15 years ago. May all those suffering from illness during this harsh cold-spell receive com-fort and healing. Christ’s peace, Father Joe

COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA This weekend is the Collection for the Church in Lat-in America! Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean do not have access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture, rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers. Your generosity makes it possible for our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. Please be generous to the special collection! To learn more, please visit www.uscch.org/latin-america. WOMEN’S DAY OF REFLECTION SS.
