RGVFD Memorial Service The RGVFD would once again like to remind you of a beautiful service that they have decided to render to every resident in the park. If you have a family member who passes away and would like to have a memorial ser-vice for him/her here in the park, the volunteer fire dept. is here to help. We will provide a beautiful table set-up, cake, coffee, and a guest book. If there would be more food brought by other people, they would help to serve it. The chair person to contact is Mary McCarthy at 352-
624-2901.

Thank You Past President Rich Allen VVA 1085 VVA Chapter 1085 would like to thank the Rolling Greens Bingo Players for their generous donation of $360.00. Your donation has already help pay for the annual Veterans Village “Ritz” BBQ, serving homeless Veteran in Marion County. We had 45 residents that attended and they were very appreciative of this event. This is just one of numerous things that our Chapter has been doing for years. Only with donations from groups and individuals like yourselves can we continue to help Veterans and their Spouses.
2nd Vice President
Kent Badders 260-602-2313 To all Rolling Greens Village Homeowners
We’d like to remind everyone our 2019 Dues of $15.00 will be collected at our next meeting. Your New Board looks forward to meeting & talking to every resident.
If anyone has question or concerns please call me 260-602-2313 or email at [email protected]
Your membership would be appreciated!
Thank You I'd like to thank everyone for all the prayers, cards, food and visits since my surgery. We certainly live in a very caring community. I'm very blessed to have a son who spent the day of the surgery with his father and a daughter who came from Texas to be my nurse. I'm going to be buzzing around the park soon and getting back to all the activi-ties I enjoy so much. I'm sorry I could not attend all the Christmas par-ties but doctors orders. I really could not ask for a better place to call home and to have such great doctors. Thank you to everyone again. Sue LaChausse

Shoes for Shepherd’s Lighthouse By: Mary Hill Residents of Rolling Greens Village know that in the past few years, I have collected shoes to benefit Shepherd’s Lighthouse in Belleview, FL. For those of you who don’t know about them, Shep-herd’s Lighthouse helps and shelters abused women and children. They have a thrift store in Belleview that helps in their mission. One way they make some money is by collecting shoes. They will accept men’s, women’s or children’s shoes, good, bad or in between. If they are in good shape, they sell them in the thrift store. If not, they sell them to a company by the pound. So tell anyone else you know about this. I will collect your unused shoes from now until mid Dec. I live at 6893C Dollymount Dr. My phone number is 724 261-0984. If not home, just leave them in our carport.
V.V.A. #1085 Bruce Lamoureux Vietnam Veterans of America chap-ter 1085 will have it's first 2019 meeting on January 3rd at 7pm in the Rolling Greens Auditorium. Our 2018 year was a good one with many activities completed. The collection of personal grooming supplies in December went great as we collected for the "Ritz" and "Vets Helping Vets" and we outdid ourselves this year. Thank you all for stepping up to the plate and being very generous. See you all at the next meeting.

Library Hours 8a-10p everyday
RG Library Corner by Barbara Critchfield I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with family and friends and that you're ready to welcome a new year. Lots of our seasonal friends are arriving to renew friendships and join in our many activities. Just as a reminder to our winter friends and new residents, the Library is open from 8:00 AM until 10:00 PM every day. Stop by at your leisure to borrow a book or maga-zine and have a cup of coffee while you visit. As January is usually a time for new resolutions, a variety of health and fitness books will be featured on the coffee table in the Library. Feel free to browse through them or take a couple home with you. Take another look at our Fitness Center and let our Social Director know if you wish to begin using the fitness equipment. We are so thankful for all the books, magazines, movies, au-dio tapes and puzzles that have been donated to the Library by the residents. I would especially like to thank Jake and Marlene Scholten and Gary Underwager for their generous donations of books and magazines during December. You don't have to have a Library card, as everything in the Library can be borrowed on the honor system. You may borrow, read, enjoy and then return the items for someone else to borrow. January is a good time to look through your books at home and donate the ones you've already read and to return to the Library some borrowed books that may have found a place on your shelf at home. One series we received as a donation last year is the Sue Grafton A through Y hardback books. We only have a couple of those on the shelf now, so I hope the rest of the series is returned soon. Another book that has been borrowed is a beautiful cloth bound, blue covered, coffee table book about the US Marines. Its companion volume about the US Air Force is in the Library and I'd like to display both books together again. If you have a large donation of items for the Library, you can drop them off or just give me a call at 352-433-0924 and I would be happy to pick them up at your home. My name and telephone number can be found on page 3 of the RG tele-phone directory. Please mark your calendars for the Fashion Show to benefit Hospice of Marion County which will be held in the Rolling Greens Auditorium on Monday, February 25, 2019. The Fashion Show will present women's fashions and accessories from the Hospice Thrift Stores. The clothing will be modeled by volunteers from Hospice and also by a few of our beautiful Rolling Greens ladies. There will be several racks of clothing and also some accessories offered for sale after the program. Kathy Moore will be your hostess for the Fashion Show this year. She will be welcoming volunteers to help put on this benefit program. Kathy can be reached at 207-542-9736. Tickets can be purchased from Rose Tan at 352-624-2597 and Barbara Critchfield at 352-433-0924. More information can be found in this newsletter. Begin the new year by participating in the many activities offered here in Rolling Greens Village. See you at the Li-brary.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE WONDERED ABOUT GOLF By Mike Stone WHO REALLY INVENTED GOLF? There is a long standing belief that golf was invented by the Scottish, sometime in the 14th or 15th centuries. This maybe false, ac-cording to Chinese professors at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. In 2006 evidence was presented that the game may have originated with the ancient Chinese game, “Chuiwan”, or “hitting ball”. A painting dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368) which depicts figures playing some sort of ball and stick game that looks much like today’s golf, was first displayed at that time. WHY DO GOLFERS YELL “FORE?” It is generally agreed that “fore” is short for ‘before’ or ‘afore’, which was an old Scottish saying that meant “look out ahead.” There is an 1824 account from the Thistle Golf Club that tells of the Duke of York referring to the duties of a ‘fore-caddy’. This job still exists. The role is to locate and determine the placement of the ball and insure no cheating. This is usually employed during tournament play. As long ago as the 17th cen-tury, golfers would yell “Fore” at the fore-caddies to let them know the ball was coming. WHY ARE THERE 18 HOLES OF PLAY ON A REGULATION GOLF COURSE? The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in Scotland was found-ed in 1754. The course, on a tract of land that had been used by golfers as early as the 15th century, was dictated by topography. Meaning: holes were set up so that every green was placed ‘where they could play no more,” i.e.; where land met the St. Andrews Bay. The course that emerged was eleven holes. After playing it through, players would turn around and play in reverse, completing 22 holes for a single round. In 1764 it was decided to combine holes one and two, and three and four, so that the field of play was reduced to 9 holes coming and going (or 18 holes). While unofficially followed as regulation for the next 200 years, it became a stipulated regulation in the 1950’s - that a course had to be 18 holes for tournament play. HOW DID THE TERM ‘BOGEY’ ORIGINATE? There was a popular song in the 1890’s British Aisles that was titled, “The Bogey Man.” It included the lyrics “I’m the Bogey Man, catch me if you can.” Golfers have always been in pursuit of the ‘elusive’ perfect score, and they began to refer to the amount of strokes on a particular hole as the “bogey.” This perfect stroke total became “par” in the early 20th century, but the original term survived, and we now know that a “bogey” signifies one stroke over par.
Bob ran home, threw open the door and yelled to his wife, “Pack your bags honey, I just won the lottery!” His wife responded, “Oh that’s wonderful! Do you think I should pack for the mountains or the beach?” Bob Replied, “I don’t care… Just get the heck out!”
Once upon a time there was a town with a new church steeple with a bell that wouldn’t ring. People came from miles around to try it. One day a small fellow came up to the priest and said, “I can do it.” The priest said, “Okay, try it.” The little fellow went to the steeple, took three steps back and ran into the bell with his face. BONG!! The bell rang and he was hired. One windy day as he took his three steps back to ring the bell, the wind moved the bell. The little fellow missed the bell and fell out the steeple. He land-ed in the middle of the plaza where people gathers to see what happened. The priest came through the crowd and asked, “Does anyone know this fellow’s name?” Just then one person replied, “I don’t know his name, but his face rings a bell.”

Wonderful Christmas party when combined with the NY and the New England clubs. So many attend-

dancing. Our thanks to all who helped set up and helped with the food: those of you who volunteered
and all of those who jumped in to help when not even asked. You know who you are. You were all
awesome.

2019 Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show Barbara Critchfield Last year's Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show was a great success. The Rolling Greens community was able to donate $2568 to Hospice of Marion County with all those funds given to benefit local residents. Four of our own ladies were models in the fashion show and many volunteers helped serve 216 lunches in our nicely decorat-ed hall. Residents and their guests who attended seemed to have a very enjoyable afternoon and were able to shop for some new fashions after the luncheon. All the volunteers who helped put on this event were kept very busy and did a great job last year, and the year before, and the year before that! I was able to call upon pretty much the same group of ladies to put together this program. I'd like to enjoy the luncheon and fashion show from the audience in 2019. I'm hoping to see a cou-ple of ladies volunteer to be the organizers for 2019, as well as new volunteers and new residents getting involved. The Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show is scheduled for January 21, 2019 with the Auditorium re-served and the event coordinated with the Marketing Man-ager from Hospice. If a new team of volunteers feels they need more time, the date could probably be changed to sometime in February or March. It's time to start planning, as we all know how fast each week goes by. Talk about it with your groups of friends. Let's come up with a couple of organizers for 2019 and start looking forward to another great day. Heidi Bea-gle (my very helpful partner the last two years) and I will be happy to answer any questions.
Don’t Pick It Up One day as she was laying in the grass, a little girl came across a shiny copper penny. It wasn’t hers, but she picked it up anyway. From that point on, whenever she went she’d always walk with her head down and her eyes glued to the ground searching for more treasures. During her lifetime she found 500 pen-nies, 75 nickels, 22 dimes, 14 quarters and one lonely paper dollar totaling a whopping $15.45. And while finding the money didn’t really involve any work on her part, she did sacrifice quite a bit, because she missed the splendor of thousands of sunsets, the glow of millions of stars on those indescribably beauti-ful nights, the majestic eagles and colorful ori-oles perched high up in the trees, the smiles of friends she could have had if she had not passed them by, and much more. Too often we become so pre-occupied with the business of living—of looking for life’s so called “treasures”— that we end up spend-ing a lifetime looking down failing to appreci-ate the beauty around us. So just remember, it’s okay to lay in the grass. Just don’t pick up the penny.
