    THE PURPOSE OF IACS

    The International Association of Classification Societies,

    IACS, was formally established in 1968 with three main

    purposes:

    To promote improvement of standards of safety at

    sea and prevention of pollution of the marine

    environment;

    To consult and cooperate with relevant internationaland maritime organizations;

    To maintain close cooperation with the worldsmaritime industries.
