Relay Chat which was created by Jarkko Oikarinen. It broke the news of the Soviet Coup attempt during the
Gulf War news blackout and # tags denoting trends or things to watch were started. People kept permanently logged in and shared files & info.

We started interacting…Late 90s message boards & internet forums became
popular1996 Instant Messenger was created by four Israeli
technologists for personal pcs this was developed further by AOL - Emoticons
(expressions), avatars (representations of you) and abbreviations such as A/S/L (age, sex, location) came in to fashion
1997 1st Social Networking Site went live – Six Degrees1998 Ecademy launched - still going 13 years laterJune 1999 Napster went live sharing rave raged until
the site was shut down and forced to remove copyrighted material

In the beginning…2002 Friendster attracted 115 million followers2004 – 2006 My Space followed creating it’s 100
millionth account on August 9th 2006 but was eclipsed in..
2007 by Facebook which has built up over 600 million users since it’s launch by Harvard students in February 2004 sharing pictures, files, statuses and gossip and have over 50% actively logging in sharing of 5 billion links
Twitter publicly in July 2006 with it’s virgin tweet sent internally on March 21st 2006 by one of the founders Jack Dorsey with now over 200 million users

Social Media is NOT a Magic Bullet
