Dear Friends,

In our lifetimes and during the past few years, this year included, we have witnessed many uprisings – popular uprisings, military uprisings, those spawned by econom-ics or by politics, by ethnic conflicts or by ideology, by a sense of greed or by religious theology. After the dust has settled, we see that some moved us a step forward, toward a better world. Some left us wondering what the point of it all had been.

In light of these relatively recent events, and especially as Pesach approaches, we might challenge ourselves by ask-ing ourselves what the point of the Biblical uprising known as the Exodus might have been… After all, the Seder night is built around questions!

Clearly, the Exodus story has not been forgotten. It echoes throughout the generations and in our hearts. Each year, as we sit around the table on Seder night, we have a chance to reflect on the meaning of that story for our lives today.

To my mind, the Exodus was an uprising that continues to inspire and to point us toward a world of greater under-

standing; toward more lasting peace; toward the ultimate redemption, presaged by the coming of Elijah the Prophet who envisioned the reconciliation of parents and children who may yet find deeper ways of turning their hearts toward one another, discovering new levels of understand-ing and of love.

Engaging our children and our youth on the Seder night as part of the seamless fabric of our traditions for Passover – giving them a place at the table; including their questions in our conversation – is the first step in the realization of Elijah’s prophecy.

It is not always easy to engage children and youth in our traditional observances. Nevertheless, integrating younger people into our adult Jewish culture is key to its continued relevance.

Listening to children is not always easy. We teach in order to teach children, and we should endeavor to do that to

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 1

the best of our ability. Nevertheless, we should not fail to recapture the essence of children’s perspective, for that perspective can inform ours as well.

When a child asks a good question, and we give that child a place at the table, we allow ourselves, as adults, to ask the good questions that we have not yet answered fully for ourselves. When a child asks a perverse, irritating ques-tion, that reminds us that we, too, may have some such questions lurking in our hearts, yet we deserve a place at the table. When a simple child asks a simple question, we may be reminded that simple truths, unarticulated, may be lost to the world around us. Most of all, when a child does not know how to ask, or when a child is silent, we should not assume that the child has no questions, no curiosity, and no need for connection. Rather, we should engage that child as warmly and gently as possible, for the sake of that child as well as for the sake of some adults around us who may, similarly, be silent, yet wanting of more connection.

The Exodus was an amazing uprising that sought to teach us the values of freedom, of responsibility, of human con-nection and of respect. It pointed us toward Torah and toward the Promised Land. It inspired us to reach higher and to delve deeper into the mysteries of the world and of the heart. It taught us to continually strive to be a people worthy of our tradition. And the Passover Seder main-tains its relevance to this day, reminding us of all of these values as we celebrate in our homes, around a table filled with family and friends – young and not so young, with scrumptious food and storytelling – generation to genera-tion. What a great tradition!

I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Purim and a Happy and Kosher Passover!

March - April 2014

President’s MessageThe time is coming for us to make a decision about relo-cation. I know that for many of you it might seem like nothing has been happening, but we have been working hard on this project behind the scenes. To recap, last year two committees worked to 1) develop plans for what improvements we would make to our current build-ing if we were to stay, and 2) what we would build if we were to relocate to the UJC campus. This enabled us to develop reasonable working estimates of the cost of each proposed alternative.

The next step in the process, which we have been work-ing on for the last few months, has been to determine– in discussions with potential major donors– whether we have the financial support to accomplish either alterna-tive. I have been working with a fundraising committee to get this accomplished. Our work is ongoing, there is much to be done, quite a few more people still to talk to, but some preliminary conclusions are emerging.

It does not appear that we have the financial support to stay at our current location and make major renova-tions as our “Whealton Road Committee” envisioned. Although there certainly are those who support staying at our present location, the majority view seems to be against putting significant money into our aging build-ing, especially given that even after a substantial reno-vation, we will be left with what would still be an old building at its core.

As to the plan to relocate to the UJC campus, I am very optimistic that we will be able to raise the funds to enable us to move. This is certainly not a “done deal,” and we still need commitments from many others– in fact, the realization of either plan will require a strong commitment from the entire congregation– but we have significant lead gifts committed, it appears that we can get it done.

The next step in the process as I envision it (in addi-tion to continuing our fundraising efforts) is to widen the conversation to include all of you. My explanation above is very much a thumbnail summary. To broaden the discussion, I am going to hold meetings in the next couple of months where everyone will be invited to come to hear a more in-depth report, ask any questions they

may have, and offer whatever input they like. I very much value your insight and opinions, and I look for-ward to hearing from you.

After completing these meetings, my plan is to hold a vote at the Annual Meeting on June 10th to either stay or go. When I was installed as President nearly three years ago, I said that I was concerned that we had sat on the fence too long and that we had the proverbial one foot out the door. It has taken a long time and there is much work yet to be done, but I am very ex-cited that the time is finally coming to definitively chart a course and to move forward in a single direction with all of our focus and effort.

Funding for Educational Scholarships, Camps, Youth Study and Travel in Israel Available Through RSTRodef Sholom Temple offers financial support through several synagogue funds to enable the children of member families to attend Jewish camps and study or travel in Israel. Each year, the Temple’s Endowment Fund provides monies to the general budget for the express purpose of helping to send young people to Israel and Jewish summer camps on approved pro-grams. For pre-Confirmation children, a committee, in consultation with Rabbi, will review programs or camps that are not Ramah or USY.

Subventions for Israel programs are available to young people in the congregation who have been confirmed and will be returning to the Peninsula for the aca-demic year following their program in Israel. Gener-ally, participants are required to assist in conducting services both before and after their trip and to write an article for the Messenger upon their return describ-ing their Israel experience (alternative requirements can be arranged). Interested applicants should send a written request to the President of Rodef Sholom, describing the program and the fees charged. Deadline for this year’s application for either of the above is March 28, 2014.

In addition to subsidies offered directly by the Temple, several RST family funds offer financial support.

The Bernice Slavin Gordon Grant for Continuing Education offers funding to the children of RST members from confirmation through age 22 (or older if engaged in a graduate Jewish studies curriculum). Qualifying programs may include, but are not limited to, high school and/or college semesters in Israel, educational seminars or programs in Israel, Jewish studies programs, Jewish educational summer camps, or participation in extraordinary youth group activities or programs. Inquiries should be directed to Richard Gordon c/o Rodef Sholom Temple.

The Boris and Selma Margolin Israel Experience Fund was established to promote the development of a strong attachment on the part of young members of the congregation to the homeland of the Jewish

people through approved study and travel programs in Israel. The subsidy consists of a one-time grant to young people who are sophomores in high school through age 25. Upon their return from Israel, grant recipients are required to present a program to the Religious School based on their experiences in order to potentially interest other young people in participating in similar study or travel programs. Inquiries should be directed to Sam Margolin c/o Rodef Sholom Temple.

The Dina & Leon Familant Memorial Scholarship Fund will pay the tuition cost up to a maximum of $2,000 per school year to an accredited college or university on behalf of a needy applicant of the Jewish community with priority given to qualified students whose parents are RST members. Inquiries should be directed to Harold Familant c/o Rodef Sholom Temple.

All of these funding opportunities are available to the children of RST members in good standing. Prospec-tive applicants should also inquire with the United Jewish Community about additional funding opportu-nities there.

Yom HaShoah, the annual Holocaust Memorial observance, will be April 27-28, 2014. The RST Men’s Club will be distrib-uting a special yellow memorial candle to every family/unit within RST’s membership. The “Light a Candle, Preserve a Memory” program will include a suggested donation to benefit RST’s Torah Maintenance Fund and/or Education Fund. To volunteer to assist with this project, please contact Sam Parrucci at [email protected]

Celebrate Special Occasions at RST Torah Fund Event

Our annual Torah Fund event took place on February 2nd, and Sisterhood is proud to announce that we met our fundraising goal of $5,000. Thanks to all who made this possible.

Mishloach Manot

During the holiday of Purim, it is a tradition to ex-change gifts of food called Mishloach Manot. This mitzvah is one of the many ways that we emphasize the importance of community. Sisterhood will be preparing Mishloach Manot bags to help our members fulfill this mitzvah. You can order a bag for each RST family for a special rate of $136.00 (total); if you do so your name will be entered to win a $50.00 gift card from Barnes and Noble. Single bags cost $6 each. Please be generous, as this is Sisterhood’s main fundraiser of the year.

Purim Party

On March 15, after the Megilah reading, you are cordially invited to our Adult Purim Party. We will have food, refreshments, live music, games, etc. BYOB. This activity is sponsored by Sisterhood and Men’s Club.

I would like to thank the RST congregation for their outpouring of support over my new role as president of sisterhood. It is with great pleasure that I look forward to represent our Sisterhood in this capacity.

Wanted: Help at FuneralsOccasionally we are aware of a death where there might be few local relatives or the family may not know a lot of persons in the community. For such a time we need people who are willing to be present at the funeral and for Shiva Minyanim so the family can say the Mourner’s Kaddish and there will be a suffi-cient number of pallbearers. If you would, please add your name to a list to be contacted in such an event. It is not necessary that you can always help out, but it would be helpful to have a sufficient number of persons upon whom we can rely to ensure that we have enough persons each time. Remember, doing an act of kind-ness for the deceased is a great mitzvah because it can never be repaid. Please get in touch with Stan Glasofer at either [email protected] or at 930-4606.

Sisterhood’s annual Torah Fund brunch was a great success, with a very good discus-sion about the modern Jewish family, led by Rabbi Dror. We also installed Joy Vicens as our new president, and we look forward to our next two years under her leadership.

My thanks to everyone who made a pledge to Torah Fund and especially to our Benefactors, listed to the right. Our donations go directly to the Jewish Theological Seminary and support the education of our future rabbis, cantors and educators. If you would like to make a contribution to Torah Fund, please send your check, made out to “Torah Fund” (not Rodef Sholom Temple Sisterhood!), to me (4 Longbow Ct., Newport News, VA 23608). I will send your check directly to the Torah Fund office in New York, and you will receive an acknowledgement of your donation from them.

Many thanks for your support of Torah Fund!

Game Night! The 25 adult attendees at Game Night enjoyed a wonderful Havdalah ceremony led by Rabbi Dror, and then the games began! The Trivial Pursuit team of Roy Lasris and John Forrest won the game after more than two hours of rowdy fun.

Other attendees played mah jong, dominoes, Bananagrams, chess, Yahtzee, and Apples to Apples- the Jewish edition of course! The evening was completely relaxing and congenial, and everyone expressed wishes for another evening to be scheduled, so watch for details.

World Wide WrapThe Men’s Club participates annually in the “World Wide Wrap” sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC). Each year, our teens and pre-teens join in the event. This year, Alan Hochman’s 5th and 6th grade class made model tefillin with materials from the FJMC’s “Build-a-Pair” program. Post B’Nai Mitzvah students learned or re-learned how to lay the tefillin that many receive at their bar/bat mitzvah ceremony. Numerous Men’s Club members and Rabbi Dror were on hand to coach. Sam Parrucci gave a tefillin information talk, and the entire group participated in a minyan service while wearing the tefillin. At right, Reilly David, Disraeli Brooks, and Josh Kostiner each “build a pair” of model tefillin to use dur-ing the program and service.

New Member Shabbat will be Friday evening,

April 25th, with a congregational dinner

and services.

Film and Discussion with Rabbi Dror

Tuesday evening, April 29th: The Gatekeepers: “For the first time ever, six former heads of the Shin Bet, Israel’s secret service agency, agree to share their insights and reflect publicly on their actions and decisions. Intimately interviewed, they shed light on the controversy surrounding the Oc-cupation in the aftermath of the Six Day War.”

Religious School Teachers Implement Classroom Management StrategiesThis year’s religious school teachers participated in a staff development program focusing on classroom management before the opening of the school year. The teachers get an A+ on their report card for suc-cessfully implementing many of the ideas discussed:

• Importance of lesson plans, schedules and routines

• Assigning identifiable personal space to students

• Classroom “Covenants” signed by members of the class

• Rotation of special jobs

• Options for arrangement of desks

• Use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning to engage all kinds of learners

• Use of personal chalkboards for inclusivity of all students’ opinions and answers

• Positive reinforcement

Selling of Chametz At Passover, we are commanded to remove all Chametz, all products that include flour and water from our homes. Typically, people clean out their home and get out their Passover dishes in the few days leading up to

Passover. Since we are not allowed to own Chametz during Passover, there is a custom of placing the Chametz in a closed, clearly marked

cabinet and then selling that Chametz to a non-Jew. If you are interested in selling your Chametz, mail back the form below

giving me permission to sell your Chametz. The completed form must reach the RST office no later than Thursday April 10, 2014 by Noon.

Please be aware that you cannot use the Chametz from the afternoon preceding Passover until 2 hours after Passover ends. It is customary to make a small donation to the Synagogue or the Rabbi’s Discretionary

fund as part of this service. Best wishes for a happy and kosher Passover!

Rabbi Gilah Dror

I, ______________________________, hereby appoint Rabbi Gilah Dror

to act as my agent to sell my Chametz in preparation for Passover. I understand that I can neither use it nor look at it during Passover.
