Both fires will need to be put out. Two fire extinguishers will not do it and they will need to ask for fire fighting equipment. Mine will have a Foam machine.

Only 4 sets of Brattice for ventilation, so this is why the fires will need to be put out.

Close Door and build three stoppings.

Air Lock

Curtain will need to be changed to a stopping

SolutionWe will assume that the team has shored up all areas in need.

If the Team finds the miner alive in Drift D first, they will need to get him out as soon as possible. If they encounter the fire first, they need to put it out with the foam machine or if they decide to regulate it and then find the miner alive while going to the other side with undo delay, they will need to take the miner out first before addressing the other side of the fire.

If the team finds the LHD fire they will need to put it out with the foam machine, as fire extinguishers won’t put it out. If they elect to regulate the fire they won’t have enough material to ventilate the mine.

Once the team has accessed all possible areas of the mine, put out the two fires with the foam machine, brought out the live miner, they can proceed to make ventilation changes.

1. Build a stopping between entry 1 and 2 in the Main Drift.2. Close the door between entry 1 and 2 in Drift A.3. Build a stopping in entry 2 between Drift B and C.4. Build a stopping in entry 3 between Drift B and C.5. The fans can now be turned on. 6. A wing curtain will need to be held up to sweep the air in the chevron.7. A temporary stopping will be built to Air Lock into chevron pillar between entry 3 and 4, in Drift C, as all the miners are unconscious and

can’t talk.8. The unconscious miner can be aroused and walked out. The other two miners must be taken out on a stretcher.

Rock Springs Mine Rescue 2014

Problem

The Pepper Mine is a small underground salt mine that has 10 miners working here but only six miners work the underground. The mine is a single level operation and is accessed via a 15 percent decline. All of the mining equipment is mechanized. We only work one shift a day 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM five days a week. The ventilation is supplied to the mine by a fan located just outside the portal. Currently the fan is off because of an electrical problem but when operating generates 75,000 CFM. The air exhausts via a borehole/secondary escapeway which is located off the main drift just west of entry 1.At 9:30 am, Eddie Apple, our shifter, called out on his radio and said that he heard a loud pop and smelled smoke. That was all we got. When we tried to raise him and the other miners no one answered the radio. None of us are trained to go underground and we need you to go underground get our guys out and recover our mine. The Apple Dumpling Team has set up a Fresh Air Base in the Main Drift.
