Deputy News Prep to Year 3

By Mr Andrew Grant The Term 3 focus for our students has been Reading and Writing. Here

are just some of the things they have been doing.

Deputy News Year 4 to Year 6 By Mrs Jennifer Johnson YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP Term 3 has come to an end and we are well underway with the planning of all learning for Term 4. Cathy Coleman, our HOC has been working very hard to ensure that the teachers have plenty of notice to prepare all of

the units they are about to teach. She also oversees the moderation of assessment pieces that have been completed this term to make sure that we are fairly grading students in different classes. The Year 6 Canberra trip was an amazing experience for myself and the other wonderful teachers who accompanied us. Thank you to Jack Pulsford, Pauline Holness, Katie Bell and Alison Coverdale for making the trip so enjoyable for the students and myself. We added as many photos to Facebook as we could to try and reduce any anxiety that parents were feeling while we were away. Here are

a couple of happy snaps that show some of the happy, fond memories that our students can take away from our six day trip. Many of the students were able to discuss with our tour guides prominent moments in Australian history and the learning from the

classroom into real life situations. The camp is part of the development and leadership program with strong links to the Civics and Citizenship and the History ACARA curriculum.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital and assists schools through the PACER Civics Education Rebate. We thank the Year 6 teachers for assisting with the trip and thank families for their ongoing support.

GALA DAY We have one more Gala sports day

left this year. If you have not paid for Friday 21 October, now is the time to make the payment. Thank you to Chris Rostron for coordinating this mammoth event for all of our students to participate in. They love the opportunity that they have been given. Thank you to all of the parents for your support in keeping this sports activity alive and well by allowing your child to attend.

PE News

Congratulations to Layla, Marco, Xavier and Lilli for being part of the Sunnybank District team that competed at the recent Metwest regional athletics. Lilli and Xavier did particularly well both coming 2nd in high jump. Both students had matched the height jumped by the winner but placed second on count back. Xavier was attending for a number of events and also place 3rd in long jump. Good luck to Lilli and Xavier when they go off to the State titles. Parents, it is that phase of year again with cool mornings but warm days. Quite often by 9:00 am the temperature is already in the low and mid-twenties. While it is a pleasant time of year it does become an issue in regards to jumpers, jackets and

to a lesser extent long pants. I am now regularly requesting students take off jumpers to participate in my lessons. It is my expectation that children participate fully in my class without being at risk of overheating. It is a timely occasion to discuss with your children about removing layers and placing these in their school bag as the day warms up. Hats and Hydration As the days warm-up and with PE lessons frequently being on the oval it is important for the children to remain hydrated. Hats are an essential part of our school uniform. The school has a no hat, no play policy. Most teachers including myself will view this as a no hat, no sun policy. There are many parts of the Robertson curriculum that involves the students being outside in the sun, none more so than PE. Please keep up the good work of having your children fully prepared for the school day. Mr Chris Rostron PE Teacher

STEM HORIZONS The STEM Horizons program for high achieving Year 6 students is an excellent opportunity to further enhance student

knowledge and extend science learning beyond the classroom. Participating students complete 4 days of specialist activities that are designed to be ‘hands on’ and engage in higher order thinking and real world problem solving.

STEM HORIZONS – STUDENT REFLECTION For me, the highlight so far has been STEM day number 2 - Understanding Micro and Macro Marine Organisms. Our research took place at Moreton Bay and our classroom was a boat. The first objective was to deploy under water surveillance cameras and bait, to explore the variety of Macro creatures in the area. We travelled to 2 sites, mapping and identifying the defining variables of each. These include longitude and latitude, wind speed, flood or ebb (the flow of the water), water depth, salinity and water temperature. We learnt how to utilise the equipment given to us to map out each of these variables and to graph them. To confirm that our results were logical, we observed the previous recordings that were taken earlier in the month. A net was used to capture the microorganisms (plankton). Samples were extracted and we observed these through a microscope. We sketched and defined the different types of plankton. Later in the day, we met a marine park ranger who outlined the many skillsets and abilities required in her job. To conclude the day, we identified many types of fish. So far, this course has been extremely educational and worthwhile, and I have learnt many things. I look forward to my final 2 STEM days in Term 4. Ryan (6P) THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN
