Happy birthday, Mickey! Disney’s most celebrated critter turns 90 this year, and Mickey’s 90th Spectacular (Nov. 4) on ABC will feature film clips and tributes by Kristen Bell, Josh Groban, Sofia Carson and many other stars. Here are five facts you may not know about the world’s favorite mouse.

Why Is the Grinch So Mean and Green? The newest version of Dr. Seuss’

classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!—full-length, computer-animated and full of laughs—opens Nov. 9 in theaters with Benedict Cumberbatch, 42, provid-ing the voice of the grumpy Grinch, who again tries to steal Christmas from his fes-tive neighbors in Whoville. This Grinch, narrated by Pharrell Williams, 45, will also feature the voices of Rashida Jones, 42, Kenan Thompson, 40, and Angela Lansbury, 93.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS

Octavia SpencerThe Academy Award–winning actress for The Help stars as Karen, a foster care social worker, in Instant Family (Nov. 16). Her character helps Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) learn the ropes of parenthood when the couple decides to adopt three kids. Spencer, 46, also serves as an executive pro-ducer of the highly acclaimed Green Book (Nov. 21), which is already getting Oscar buzz. How is Instant Family special? When I read the script, it made me laugh and it broke my heart in so many ways. It made me realize that there are people who exist in the world who have this capacity to love.

Who is Karen? At one point, my character was a teenager in foster care. That’s why she really promotes having the family make room for older kids, because she was one of those kids in the system.

How did you get invited to join Mark Wahlberg’s 4 a.m. workout club? I started posting my terrible

workouts on Instagram and Mark was so kind and extended his hand for me to come and learn. I went to work out with his guys and get an assessment, learn my body fat. It was really about finding out all of the things you need to know for true fitness.

Green Book’s Viggo Mortensen plays a bouncer hired to drive a black classical pia-nist (Mahershala Ali) on a tour through the 1960s American South. How does it resonate today? These are two men from disparate backgrounds who had to find a way to come to terms with their differ-ences. I think the beauty of a film like this now is it can be a teaching tool or a leaping-off point to have very needed dialogue and not in a confrontational way.

How is she trying to put positive energy into the world? Go to Parade.com/spencer to find out.

Mickey was originally going to be named Mor-timer, but Walt Disney’s wife, Lillian, felt that name was too pompous.

An oversize Mickey Mouse balloon first made its appearance in the 1934 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Mickey only has four digits— because a cartoon mouse hand with five fingers would look like a “bunch of bananas,” said Walt.

Mickey was the first animated char-acter to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1988, Mickey ap-peared on the Academy Awards telecast, pre-senting an envelope to Tom Selleck. In 2003, he returned to present with Jennifer Garner.

Hugh Jackman Plays Politics“I had a passing knowledge of the scan-dal,” says Jackman, 50, who plays Gary Hart in The Front Runner (Nov. 6), a drama about how the U.S. senator from Colorado was forced out of the race for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination when his extramarital affair was revealed by the press. “When Hart was running, our ap-petite for news was just beginning to grow the way it has,” says the star of Les Misérables, The Greatest Showman and the X-Men franchise. “People were starting to want more im-mediate, fast-breaking news, and this scandal fed into that.”

The directions on my new tea kettle say to fi ll it with cold water. Why not hot water? It should boil quicker.

—Orlo Burch, Hartwick, N.Y.Yes, hot water will boil a little faster, but speed isn’t the goal. Rather, cold water comes from the water pipes serving your house, but hot water comes from your water heater, where it may acquire a bit of metallic taste from being stored there for a while. So most packets of gravies and soups, etc., will instruct you to start with cold water. And for tea afi cionados, the difference may be great. Manufacturers of kettles—often used to boil water for tea—are sensitive to this concern.

for six smart bedtime snacks.

One in eight American adults (about 29 million) has Type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body doesn’t use insulin properly or make enough of it, causing

blood glucose levels to climb. The older you get, the greater your risk.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that people with diabetes spend 2.3 times more on medical expenses than people without the disease—all the more reason to take prevention seriously or, if you’ve been diagnosed, to manage it as best you can.

1 Sugary foods and drinks don’t cause

diabetes. But that doesn’t mean you can consume end-less amounts of Ben & Jerry’s. When you overdo the sweet stuff, you’re taking in extra calories, says Sacha Uelmen, RDN, director of nutrition at the ADA. And that packs on the pounds, upping your risk for Type 2.

2 You could have prediabetes and not know it. One in

three Americans over age 20—a staggering 86 million—has blood glucose (sugar) levels hovering just below the Type 2 diabetes threshold (fasting glucose level of 100–125 mg/dL). Prediabetes isn’t harmless: It may damage blood vessels and cause nerve problems, says William Cefalu, M.D., chief scientifi c, medical and mission

offi cer for the ADA. To learn if you should be checked for pre-diabetes, take the ADA risk test at doihaveprediabetes.org.

3 You can prevent or delay its onset.

If you have predia-betes, you can help reverse the disease by losing 7 percent of your body weight. For starters, eat healthfully and get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking. You don’t have to do it alone. The ADA’s lifestyle change program, the National Diabetes Prevention Program, is now a covered one-time benefi t for Medicare benefi ciaries who meet certain criteria. Ask your health-care provider for details.

4 Even older people can develop Type 1 diabetes.

Though it’s dubbed juvenile

diabetes because it typically affects children and young adults, Type 1 doesn’t dis-criminate based on age. A recent study found that 4 percent of 31- to 60-year-olds diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes actually had Type 1. Because it’s more rare in the over-30 set and because Type 2 is so common, doctors sometimes overlook Type 1. Some red fl ags indicating an older person with Type 2 may have Type 1: Her weight is nor-mal and she doesn’t respond to Type 2 medications.

5 It really hurts your heart.

People with dia-betes are two to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes, says Cefalu. But a re-cent study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that if you stop smoking and take steps to lower your blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c (a blood pigment that glucose attaches to), LDL cholesterol and albuminuria (a marker for kidney damage), you can erase the excess risk.

6 It can raise your risk for gum disease. Type 1 and

Type 2 up the risk for cavities, thrush, dry mouth and peri-odontitis, says diabetologist Jay Shubrook, D.O., director of diabetes services at Touro University in Vallejo, Calif.

7 The dreaded fi nger stick

may become a thing of the past. According to the FDA, two new continuous glucose monitoring devices (CGMs)—the Dexcom G6 and the FreeStyle Libre—are “ac-curate enough to make insulin dosing decisions without the need for a fi nger stick,” says endocrinologist Aaron Nein-stein, M.D., director of clinical

informatics at the University of California San Francisco Center for Digital Health Innovation. The latest CGMs are also compatible with smart devices, allowing you to check glucose levels quickly. The Dexcom G6 even sounds an alarm if levels drop, so you can enjoy worry-free sleep.

8 It’s bad for bones. In people with diabetes, hor-

mones and cell products called cytokines can weaken bones, raising fracture risk, says Felicia Cosman, M.D., profes-sor of medicine at Columbia University. Also, conditions associated with diabetes, such as neuropathy, vision problems and low blood sugar, increase the risk of falling and breaking a bone. If you have diabetes, ask your doctor if you need a bone density test, a good idea if you’re over 50 or you’ve broken a bone, says Cosman, editor-in-chief of the journal Osteoporosis International.

8Things You Didn’t Know About Diabetes

ASK THE DOCTOR

Can Prediabetes Put Your Vision at Risk?Just as diabetes can increase your risk of developing blind-ness, having prediabetes can increase your risk of vision loss too.

Prediabetes can cause retinopa-thy, changes to the structure of the eye that can result in vision loss. Having retinopathy is the single biggest predictor for vision loss. It has the best chance for treatment success if detected early and treated. That’s why it’s important to get a dilated eye exam every year. And ask your primary doctor about testing for pre-diabetes if you’re overweight and older than 45.

—Cleveland Clinic ophthalmologist Sumit Sharma, M.D.

R obert Redford and Sissy Spacek both remember the night they each got an Oscar that neither was expecting.

It was 1981, and Spacek won the Best Actress trophy for portraying country singer Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter. It was beyond her dreams to think her name would be called—at 31, she was “the kid,” up against Goldie Hawn, Mary Tyler Moore, Ellen Burstyn and Gena Rowlands. “I couldn’t believe I won,” she still marvels.

Moments later, Redford took home Best Director and Best Picture honors for his family tearjerker Ordinary People. “I had been known as an actor,” he says. “It was my first time directing. I couldn’t imagine I could get the award.”

Now fast-forward more than 35 years to their equally surprised reaction upon realizing they have a combined 100 years

of cinematic greatness between them. “That’s pretty scary!”

says Spacek. Redford, well known for his cool-guy persona in classics ranging from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) to the one-man drama of All Is Lost (2013), shakes his head over some of his not-so-impressive films. “You should see my earlier work,” he deadpans.

The two living legends finally came together in the acclaimed true-crime comedy The Old Man & the Gun (now in theaters). Redford plays Forrest Tucker, a real-life convicted felon who politely robbed banks well into his 70s. Mid–police chase after one heist, Tucker pulls over to help a woman (Spacek) on the

side of the road with car trouble. A tenta-tive romance brews.

“When Sissy was cast, I wondered at the time why we hadn’t worked together before,” Redford says.

“I think it’s because we’re both red-heads,” Spacek chimes in. “Directors were like, ‘No, that will never work!’ ”

The Way They WereThe stars’ natural, feisty rapport is pal-pable over lunch in a cleared-out New York City hotel restaurant. The reminisc-ing starts early: “Do I have this right, that you did a Bonnie & Clyde with Martin Sheen?” asks Redford, 82. Oh, yes, replies Spacek, 68—her crime-spree movie was Badlands. “That was really good!” he

exclaims. “That’s when I first remember you!”

Spacek reminds him they had met a few years earlier. It was 1970, and the 21-year-old, freckle-faced Quitman, Texas, native had just signed with a casting director to help ignite her acting career. Redford was working with the same agent, and they crossed paths in her office. “I was meeting on my first film [Prime Cut], and he was a big star by then. I was so excited,” she recalls.

Who could blame her? The hunky actor has won over audi-ences since his Broadway debut back in 1959. But he was still a relatively unproven entity during the casting of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. “The studio didn’t want me because I wasn’t a ‘name,’ ” he says. “They wanted Steve McQueen or Marlon Brando.” Director George Roy Hill asked leading man Paul Newman, who had the Butch Cassidy part, to vet him. “I wouldn’t have been in the movie if not for [Newman],” Redford says, acknowledging that the straight-shooter Sundance Kid character remains his most defining role.

Spacek says her most cher-ished movie experiences include Badlands (where she met her husband, set decorator Jack Fisk) and the 1976 horror flick Carrie, in which she played the very lethal telekinetic titular high-school senior.

Off the GridCareer stories aside, Spacek and Redford share much in common. They were both born in Texas. In his case, it was Austin. His mother, Martha, moved him out

continued on page 16

Butch Cassidy and the Sun-dance Kid (1969) — Redford and Paul Newman teamed up to play rakish Old West outlaws. The movie won four Oscars, including Best Original Song for “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.”

The Sting (1973) — Redford reunited with Newman for this Best Picture–winning caper, about a pair of small-time Depres-sion-era grifters who conspire to pull off the ultimate con on a Chicago crime boss.

Carrie (1976) — Spacek played the shy high-schooler with special telekinetic powers. But after her mean class-mates play a cruel trick at the prom, she gets her bloody revenge.

All the President’s Men (1976) — Journalists Bob Woodward (Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoff-man) bring down the Richard Nixon administration with their Watergate scoop.

Badlands (1973) — An impressionable teenage girl (Spacek) and her older boyfriend (Martin Sheen) take off on a killing spree across the South Dakota Badlands in this critically acclaimed film loosely inspired by a real-life 1958 murder spree.

The Way We Were (1973) — It was all so simple then, when Redford’s Hub-bell fell for Barbra Streisand’s political activist Katie. Alas, their opposites-attract marriage was not meant to be.

Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) — Spacek won raves—and an Oscar—and did her own singing as Loretta Lynn, the strong-willed teen bride who grew up to be coun-try music royalty.

Crimes of the Heart (1986) — Three sisters (Spacek, Diane Keaton and Jessica Lange) reunite in their Mississippi family home to settle their past. Spacek nabbed an Oscar nom for her role.

All Is Lost (2013) — In a tour-de-force solo perfor-mance, Redford is all alone and desperately trying to save himself after his sailboat starts to sink.

The Help (2011) — Spacek was part of this beloved drama’s all-star ensemble cast, playing Missus Walters, the batty mom of Bryce Dallas Howard’s bratty Hilly Holbrook. Oh, how she delighted in seeing her daughter eat that “chocolate” pie!

The Horse Whisperer (1998) — Redford was behind the camera and in front, playing a gifted trainer hired to nurse a girl (a young Scarlett Johansson) and her horse back to health.

Over the years, Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek have starred in dozens of movies, including these popular classics. And no, neither of them is ready to retire.

reatestG itsH The Natural (1984) — Who could forget Redford’s base-ball phenom Roy Hobbs stepping up to the plate and belting one last home run, busting out the lights in the process?

to L.A. when he was a baby. But he returned to the Lone Star State every summer to spend time with his grandfather, who had a home on Lake Austin. In Los Angeles, Redford’s family made a concerted effort to live far from the glitzy Hollywood scene. “I grew up in Hollywood and knew enough about it to say that’s not where I want to be,” he says. Redford and his wife of nearly a decade, multimedia

artist Sibylle Szaggars, split their time between his property deep in the mountains of Sundance, Utah, and Santa Fe, N.M. All three adult children (from his first marriage, to historian Lola Van Wagenen) are artists: Shauna, 57, is a painter; son Jamie, 56, is a writer and producer; and Amy, 48, is a director.

Spacek and Fisk, wed for 44 years, reside in rural Virginia. “I just love nature,” she says. “I love hearing bugs and rain. I come from a long line of agriculturists in Texas.” Pointing to Redford, an outspoken environmental-ist, she says, “One of the things we share is a love of nature and animals and horses.” (They both ride in The Old Man & the Gun.)

And like Redford, Spacek’s daughters are creatives: Schuyler, 36, is an actress and singer-

songwriter, and Madison, 30, is a painter. “No doctors or lawyers in our families, I’m afraid,” she says. Quips Redford, “God forbid we get sick!”

No Slowing DownAbove all else, they have a love of their craft that has not faded with time. Spacek recently completed her three-season run as Sally Rayburn on Netfl ix’s Bloodline and co-stars as mys-terious former professor Ruth Deaver in the Hulu thriller Castle Rock (like Carrie, it’s a Stephen King adaptation). She also appears with Julia Roberts in the new Amazon Prime series Homecoming.

Redford created a bit of buzz during the fi lming of e Old Man & the Gun when he said the movie would be his last acting role. en the Sundance Kid backed off that comment, and he now confi rms that he’s not shut-ting the door on future roles.

Clearly, Redford and Spacek both have many worthwhile years yet to come. Spacek leans in to tell about seeing a cinema retrospective about the legend-ary actress Bette Davis and how her movies were such wonder-ful “proof that she was once so young.”

“One of the faults of Holly-wood is that people put so much emphasis on staying young,” adds Redford. “I can tell when [an older actor] tries to make the eff ort, and it looks fake. You’re missing a great dimension.

“Why can’t we just let our-selves be?” He pauses. “You can age and be beautiful.”
