2012 UNITED WAY OF WESTERN CONNECTICUT COMMUNITY INSPIRATION AWARD
The Community Inspiration Award is given to an individual or organization that moves people to LIVE UNITED in Stamford. Since 1942, United Way has been working to improve the Education, Income and Health of all those who live in western Connecticut. To LIVE UNITED means being part of the cause. It takes everyone in the community working together to create a better future for all.
HARRY HURVITZThis year we are honoring Harry Hurvitz, National Managing Tax Partner of Strategic Clients and former Stamford Office Managing Partner for Deloitte.
Since 1998, Mr. Hurvitz has worked to mobilize the Stamford business community to help address the region’s needs and challenges. Recognizing the critical relationship between healthy communities and healthy enterprises, Mr. Hurvitz has dedicated his time to linking key-skilled volunteers with local health and human services agencies to enhance the delivery of their services.
At Deloitte, Mr. Hurvitz has led the firm’s community service initiatives, including its United Way Annual Campaign and Impact Day activities; Impact Day is Deloitte’s national day of community service. Under Mr. Hurvitz’s leadership, Deloitte’s Stamford employees have volunteered at Shelter for the Homeless, Domestic Violence Crisis Center, The Chester Addison Community Center and The Volunteer Center to name a few. As a result, many Deloitte employees continue to contribute their time to these organizations year-round.
Mr. Hurvitz has also strengthened the economic vitality of Fairfield County through his service on the Board of Directors for The Business Council of Fairfield County and as the Chairman of the Fairfield County Information Exchange, a data resource of The Business Council.
ERNEST DIMATTIAOur evening’s host is Ernest DiMattia, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Ferguson Library. For over 35 years, Mr. DiMattia has led this vital center of learning and education in Stamford. The Ferguson serves nearly a million visitors each year (and countless others through its online services), and fully embraces its mission to provide free and equal access to information for all. In addition to his outstanding achievements in the field of library science, Mr. DiMattia is also an adjunct professor at several graduate schools and a noted community leader, having served on many Stamford-area boards, including Junior Achievement, the Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford Rotary Club, the Stamford Partnership, Stamford Police Foundation, Salvation Army, Stamford Chamber of Commerce, World Affairs Forum and Literacy Volunteers of Stamford.
