ALMA MATER HYMN written by dr. frank m. williams
(Please stand and join the choir in the singing of the alma mater.) roanoke college choir
dr. Jeffrey r. sandborg, Director
Deep in our hearts, a flame is softly burning.
deep in our thoughts, the mem’ries are returning.
bells that are ringing, choirs that are singing,
bring back the joys that we have known.
learning to live, and loving as we’re learning.
Seeking to find the truths for which we’re yearning.
Years come and go, but we’ll always know
that dear old roanoke served us well.
to live once more, here in these hallowed halls.
to know once again all the joys that we used to know!
some day the winter of life will pass before us.
then we’ll remember the place that proudly bore us.
then we’ll remember alma mater.
then we’ll remember thee.

Regine N. Archer
Great leaders are rare, but in every sense, Regine N. Archer fulfills that description in a multitude of ways. whether in business, in civic affairs, in her family, in her community, or for roanoke college, she has made a positive and lasting impact. as great leaders are wont to do, she served as a pioneer, clearing a path for other women entering the world of commerce.
a native of liège, belgium, archer is chairman of blue ridge beverage company, Inc., headquartered in salem, virginia. the company, founded in 1938 as a beer distributor, has been under the direct ownership of the archer family since 1959, when regine archer and her late husband, James m. archer, Jr., moved their family to the roanoke valley.
regine archer became president of blue ridge beverage in 1972 after her husband died suddenly. Though she had worked in the company for 15 years, it was difficult for some to envision a woman at the helm of a business in a traditionally male-dominated industry. but under her management — and that of the entire archer family — blue ridge beverage today is one of the largest full-service wholesale beverage distributors in virginia. the company employs 385 people and services more than 4,000 retail customers including supermarkets, convenience stores and restaurants.
the company has remained a family business, as all six archer children work full-time in various capacities for the company.
ms. archer, who attended the lycée léonie de waha in liège until circumstances of nazi occupation interrupted her formal education, is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. In 2005, she was inducted into Junior achievement of southwest virginia’s business hall of fame, only the second woman to be so honored. she was awarded the lifetime service award by the national beer wholesalers association that same year. In 2006, sabmiller named her a miller legend based on her four-decade commitment to miller brewing company and to the beer industry in general.
active in industry and civic affairs, ms. archer has been involved with the bradley free clinic, the roanoke valley business council, center in the square and the virginia tech ut Prosim society, an organization created to recognize donors who are leaders in the community of philanthropy that sustains virginia tech. archer also has served on the boards of opera roanoke and the virginia tech foundation. In 2004, ms. archer created the archer family endowment within the salem educational foundation, in memory of her late husband, James. awards from this endowment are made to deserving graduates of salem high school who plan to attend a four-year college or university and who have been outstanding academic students.
ms. archer, whose grandson tripp hunt is a 2006 graduate of roanoke college, has been very involved in the college community. a roanoke college associate for 31 years, she also created the regine archer endowed scholarship for International Students. The scholarship, which provides financial aid to full-time international students, reflects Archer’s solid work ethic, her belief in the value of education and her interest in internationalism. archer also has served on the college’s fine arts endowment committee.
Honorary Degree recipient Doctor of Commerce

steven white earned his bachelor’s degree in music in 1985. he continued his formal education with graduate studies in voice and conducting.
maestro white has contributed to the roanoke college community in a number of ways. In addition to monetary gifts, he has given the gift of time and experience. he has been a roanoke college associate for four years, with gifts made in support of the roanoke college children’s choir. by his invitation, the children’s choir has been consistently featured in opera roanoke productions.

acaDemic regaliaceremonial robes worn in the academic procession during commencement exercises
convey the breadth and intricate structure of the academic world.
Colors of diverse institutions and academic fields stand in high relief against the basic black of the caps and gowns. by its color(s), the lining of the hood represents the college or university that is conferring the degree.
note the royal blue and gold of roanoke college.
gowns themselves are different shapes for bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. The typical American cap is flat with a tassel draped over its front edge. Some colleges and universities
in the united states and abroad use caps that are softly peaked or round and stiff.
In addition to traditional regalia, you will see some students at roanoke’s commencement ceremony wearing honor cords and graduation stoles.
honor cords consist of colorful twisted cords with tassels on the ends. the cords signify academic achievement or membership in a recognized academic honor group or society.
For graduates earning Latin honors, you will see specific solid-color honor cords: gold for summa cum laude, silver for magna cum laude, and white for cum laude.
graduation stoles are decorative vestments worn by members of a college organization. the stoles recognize membership or achievement.
The cord and stole color and design are specific to a recognized academic honor or group.
hoods also differ in shape for each of the traditional degrees. the edge of the hood and the chevrons and piping of the gown mark the field of study, according to the following scheme:
agriculture – maizearts, letters, humanities – whitecommerce, business – drab and sapphire blueeconomics – coppereducation – light blueengineering – orangefine arts, architecture – brownJournalism – crimsonlaw – Purplelibrary science – lemon
medicine – greenmusic – Pinkoratory – silver grayPhilosophy – dark bluePhysical education – sage greenPublic administration – Peacock bluescience – golden Yellowsocial work – citrontheology – scarlet
many of our graduating seniors today wear medallions, cords and/or stoles. these represent and celebrate a student’s special cultural heritage or membership in an academic honor society.
The Roanoke College MaceThe Roanoke mace was presented to the College in 1996 by the four daughters of Hartselle DeBurney Kinsey ’21. The mace is dedicated to Mr. Kinsey, who was devoted to Roanoke College as a student, teacher, advocate and trustee.
Maces date back to the Middle Ages, when they were used as weapons. Today, they are primarily symbols of academic authority used at formal convocations and commencement ceremonies.
Roanoke College’s mace was designed by Susannah Wagner, a British-trained goldsmith and jeweler in Ashland, Virginia. Also involved in its making were a jeweler, engraver, stonecutter, glass- blower and wood crafter. The mace features a sterling silver headpiece, which is adorned with garnets and engraved symbols representing subjects cherished by Mr. Kinsey, an American walnut baluster (or wooden stem) and a medallion engraved with a replica of the College seal on one side and the symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on the reverse. A maroon hand-blown glass globe honoring the College colors rests inside the sterling silver cage of the headpiece. The cage features architectural elements from Miller Hall and rests on a base that includes a fleur-de-lis pattern found in wrought ironwork around campus.
The Roanoke College SealThe seal of the College was redesigned by Guy A. Ritter, Jr.,
Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion Emeritus. It was approved by the Board of Trustees in April of 1964. It features a shield in national blue emblazoned with a mandarin yellow cross, representing Roanoke College’s relationship with the Lutheran Church. The cross symbolizes the Christian values inherent in our culture, and above it is the lamp of knowledge.
The white dogwood flower on the shield symbolizes the State of Virginia. The motto, “PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT,” means
“Let him who earns the palm wear it.” The palm is symbolic of the palm leaf that was given in honor of excellence in ancient Greece.
