Insightful solutions. Empowering advice.
Road Safety Audits (RSA’s) are a proactive approach to road safety, forming an integral part of the safe systems approach at all stages of roading projects. Audits are often required to be completed by the Road Controlling Authority at various stages of your project.
A road safety audit is a specialist process that is carried out independently of design and construction work. Safety audits are intended to ensure that operational road safety experience is applied during the design and construction process to proactively address crash risk.
Do you have an innovative design that is outside of the standard guidelines?
At Abley, we have experience in auditing traditional schemes such as subdivisions, minor improvements projects and intersection improvements. We also have expertise in safety auditing more innovative schemes such as shared spaces, pedestrian and cycling facilities and sculptures in roundabouts.
Road safety audits fulfil a vital role in checking that schemes have been designed and built to the highest safety standards. A well carried out road safety audit adds value to a project at every level.
Abley understand the pressures of tight project deadlines and aim to complete road safety audits within ten working days.

A framework developed by Austroads to assess how closely aligned a road design is with safe system objectives. SSAF quantifies the risk of various crash types based on assessments of the expected exposure, likelihood and severity. Abley have also adapted the SSAF for application on urban arterials, a process which we refer to as USSA (Urban Safe System Assessment). Abley have completed USSA assessments in New Zealand and Australia and are available to help you undertake these assessments for your schemes.
A SANF is a cycleway review to ensure the design meets a good level of safety whilst taking into account the overall functionality of the transport network for all road users. The SANF considers the wider effects compared to a Road Safety Audit and requires a highly specialised skill set to undertake the review. Abley have team members with this skill set to help you undertake SANF’s.
Transport for London’s Healthy Streets Check for Designers is a tool consisting of 10 indicators that the proposed scheme is scored against. The overall score shows the strengths and weaknesses in the proposed street treatments. The audit is focused on design elements that can be influenced by the people designing schemes.
Abley have been applying this tool to a number of streets in New Zealand, and without doubt, the tool provides a consistent framework to assess existing and proposed designs on an equal footing and presents the results in a way that the general public can understand. Our team would be happy to talk through this process with you if you have any schemes that might benefit from a Healthy Streets check.
