The Week's Special Events on the Air By THE FORECASTER

AMONG Special Events for the week- j. the International Labor Conference from

Geneva, Sunday morning at 8:45 over CBS; and the Brahms Festival of Chamber Music over KGO and NBC net Monday and Thurs- day from 3:30 to 5 p. m.

George Bernard Shawites may hear "O'Fla- herty, V. C." Tuesday at 5 p. m. over CBS, and the Los Angeles Symphony at 8 p. m., Tuesday and Thursday, via the same net- work.

Pick and Pat's "One Night Stands" on CBS Monday at 7:30 p. m. should provide a laugh or two. If you do not already know it, they are the "Molasses and January" of "Show Boat" fame.

Salon Moderne, KFRC, Sunday evening at seven is developing some delightful moments. Beatrice Benaderet's readings punctuate Claude Sweeten's music very agreeably.

Road to Fame, a new feature is rocketing along via CBS every Monday evening at 8 :30.

NBC Press Manager Naval Reserves Officer

It is "Lieutenant Yoder" now. Lloyd E. Yoder, manager of the press de-

partment of the Western Division of the National Broadcasting Company, has been commissioned a lieutenant in the Naval Re- serves, attached to the Twelfth Naval Dis- trict.

The commission adds still another activity to the many with which the young executive is associated. A former all-American star, Yoder is a Pacific Coast Conference football official, and is secretary -treasurer of the Northern California Football Officials' As- sociation. He is a member of the Olympic Club, Press Club and the Army and Navy Club, and is a director of the San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce.

New Program Offers Short Dramas A new KNX feature brings complete and

exciting dramas each Thursday at 9:30 p. m. under the title of "Short, Short Stories."

The Girl on the Cover "Song Fashionette," JEANNE DUNNE.

Jeanne is KFWB's clever little "Play- time Lady," who left a music counter to sing on the radio. She also writes continuity and is heard in "Song Sil- houettes" and "Playtime Lady."

ATOTWITHSTANDING the usual sum - 1 ' mer changes, big time radio features continue in an imposing array. Everything musical from symphony to musical saws, and drama to doggerel.

The Fitch Sunset Dreams program with Morin Sisters and Ranch Boys is in marked contrast to Wendell Hall, who is now on a morning spot, KPO net, at 7:15 Wednesday.

Hour of Charm signs off Wednesday, June 25, CBS. The Night Editor leaves KPO net Friday, June 27. Effective Monday, July 29, the Lux Radio Theatre will be moved to a new spot on CBS, Monday, 5 to 6 p. m.

Wayne the Waltz King, with his wife, former flickerite Dorothy Janis, is Hplly- wooding, where, if rumor is correct, the band leader will make several movie tests at the behest of celluloid biggies. Ted Fio -Rito and his boys will "sub" for Wayne on that face - powder serenade during his holiday.

Grant Garrett, one of the ether's leading gagmen who formerly originated nifties for Olsen and Johnson, Eddie Cantor, Benny Rubin, etc., has signed with RKO to write the new Wheeler & Woolsey picture, "Rain- maker."

Tony Wons' Scrapbook program has been moved to Friday, Saturday and Sunday spots so that the genial philosopher can spend the Preceding four days at his summer lodge in Wisconsin.

American Family Robinson, heard Wednes- days at 4:15 p. m. over KROW, is also on 205 other stations during the week. This is one of the largest broadcasts of a single pro- gram on the air waves today. Its popularity is attributed to its realistic portrayal of national problems as they affect a typical American family.

B ROADCAST WEEKLY

Vol. XIV San Francisco, California, June 22, 1935 No. 25

News and Comment N this issue BROADCAST WEEKLY pioneers again with the first weekly listing service

for all -wave enthusiasts. Arrangements are being made to receive advance news of the world's finest entertainment from all coun- tries through special service by cable and transatlantic telephone.

Many Eastern network features not heard on the Pacific Coast, are available over the short waves. This new feature is edited for the Pacific Coast, and will consist only of programs that may be received under ordi- narily favorable conditions, with an up-to- date all -wave or short wave receiver.

All -wave fans are requested to coöperate by reporting reception to all -wave editor, BROADCAST WEEKLY, 1114 Mission Street, San Francisco. This is necessary in order to check accuracy of station information fur- nished. Tell us how you like this feature, what set you are using, and how the "Short - Wave Featurelog" may be of greater service to you.

Standard Symphony Celebrates Eighth Year

The presentation of consecutive weekly symphony concerts by outstanding sym- phonic organizations, uninterrupted since October 23, 1927, when the first Standard Symphony Hour was broadcast, is an achieve- ment unparalleled in radio. The program is one of the best -established and most popular in the West; and the constant increase and keen appreciation of its audience has encour- aged the Standard Oil Company of California in its presentation of the concerts through- out these years.

According to the repeated comments re- ceived in a voluminous fan marl, the chief reasons for the growth and maintenance of popularity of the Symphony Hour are the characteristic high standard of program and performance; the unfailing regularity of the concerts; and the absence of all objectionable advertising.

Among the splendid musical organizations heard are the Standard Symphony Orches- tra and the symphony orchestras of San

Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Port- land, directed by such distinguished con- ductors as Gaetano Merola, Alfred Hertz, Otto Klemperer, Basil Cameron, Willem van Hoogstraten, Bernardino Molinari, Issay Do- browen, Arthur Rodzinski, Ernest Schelling, Sir Hamilton Harty, Mishel Piastro, Antonia Brico, Nathan Abas, Henri Svedrovsky, Ray- mond Paige, Hans Leschke, Max Dolin and Hans Blechschmidt.

New KNX Studios to Open About August First

That they may play host to the members of the National Association of Broadcasters, who will continue on to the Pacific Coast from their annual convention at Colorado Springs, July 6 to 10, KNX has ordered full speed ahead on the construction of their new studios on Sunset Boulevard at Gordon.

The building to be occupied by KNX was formerly that used for exhibition purposes by the Motion Picture Hall of Fame, and as designed by Earl Heitschmidt, will be one of the show places of Hollywood when com- pleted. The studio floor space will occupy 60,000 square feet, and each of the six stu- dios will have double -height ceilings so as to get the maximum results for broadcasting.

Open house is planned for the entire first week of occupancy by the Western Broad- casting Company, and the programs for that week will be of a dedicatory nature to many of the civic and governmental organizations of the Southland.

Remarks broadcast by Mr. Max Baer, following his losing bout, could not but be considered offensive to good taste. Loose talk concerning loose habits have no place on the radio.

The Phil Baker show folds its accordion and quietly steals away when the jester's present contract expires at the end of July. Reason: the new Armour president, long a resident of Great Britain, is said to cock a quizzical eyebrow at radio as an advertising medium.

6 BROADCAST WEEKLY June23-29

Hollywood Radio Flashes Ferde Grofe, orchestra leader for Burns

and Allen, is writing a suite called "Holly- wood Ballet," which will be presented at the Hollywood Bowl this summer.... George and Gracie, by the way, like broadcasting before large audiences. "The competition makes it tough for Gracie's relatives to get tickets," George explains. . . . "Hollywood Hotel" is one of radio's most painstaking productions, requiring more than twenty-four hours' rehearsal. . . . The program attracts a flock of movie stars to each broadcast, making it a field day for autograph seekers.

. . On the other hand, Bing Crosby, to avoid them, broadcasts from a remote out-of- the-way studio in Los Angeles, with its loca- tion undisclosed. . . . Everett Marshall is making a picture for Warner Brothers. . .

Nino Martini is another CBS artist in the filin capital.... Two of Kate Smith's Three Ambassadors have arrived back home in Hollywood for a month's vacation... . Vir- ginia Verrill, now in Manhattan, recently re- ceived word that her prize pheasants have copped some sort of honors in a bird show.

Pity the plight of the poor radio announcer Don Forbes, KHJ spieler, with no time

for preparation, was handed the following announcement to read over the air .

. the participating organizations include the American Association of Economic En- tomologists, the American Meteorological Society . the American Phytopathological Society, the American Society of Ichthyolo- gists and Herpetologists . the Ecological Society of America, the Pacific Coast Ento- mological Society . . . and the Committee on Oceanography . . . " And, we're only re-

producing the hardest part of it . . . there were plenty of other "stickers," too . . . try reading it over with no practice, and see how far you'll get . . . Forbsie did it O. K.

"Iron -Man Vic" Quails Before Microphone

"Broadcasting" declared Victor McLaglen before and after his first "Red Trails" pro- gram on NBC, "is the most nerve-wracking job I've ever done." The burly screen player, who has begun a limited engagement as Constable Eric Lewis in the Tuesday night Canadian Mounted Police series, has ap- peared in more than two hundred pictures, has followed the British flag around the world, fought head-hunters and Arabs, wild South African tribes, and vaudeville booking agents; has boxed and wrestled profession- ally; yet he says "The hour before I went on the air was the toughest I ever endured in my life."

Universal film producers have added an- other NBC singing star to the picture "My First Kiss," which was previously titled "Sing Me a Love Song."

Pinky Tomlin, known to thousands of radio fans for his "Object of My Affections," has joined the cast which is headed by Doro- thy Page, glamourous songstress who was an NBC coast -to -coast personality before the movies claimed her.

The Voice of Experience has purchased one of the new electric pipeless organs for his home although, because of an accident, he cannot play the instrument. The Voice, inci- cidentally, was guest organist at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 when he was but 14.

Left, Teddy Lynch, new CBS singing star; center, Cornelia Otis Sklnnner, celebrated American actress, NBC, Sunday evening at 6:30; right, Ruth Durell, soprano, KFWB.

THE strength of reception in this coun- try for the new Japanese international short-wave broadcasts has been rather

disappointing to most listeners. Although using a power of 20,000 watts on 14.60 meg., station JVH has unfortunately employed a regular non -directional antenna for these daily transmissions. However, the announce- ments and news items can be clearly under- stood, due mainly to the fact that the Eng- lish work in front of the microphone is handled by a gentleman who sounds sus- piciously like an imported NBC announcer. Announcing in Japanese is done by a woman.

The station can be identified by its slogan "The Voice of the Pacific." Comments and criticisms from listeners are solicited, and future programs will be adjusted according to the mail received. This hour is being broadcast daily solely as a good -will measure, and is dedicated to overseas listeners. Re- ports on reception should be addressed to the Broadcasting Corporation of Japan, in Tokio.

* * *

Station 3LR of Melbourne, Australia, has been very active in the evening hours during the past week, relaying the city programs of 3AR between 9:30 and 11:20 p. m. Whether due to increased power, or to warmer weather, the strength of this station has greatly improved lately and listeners should certainly have no difficulty in picking it up.

Another flash from Australia states that VK2ME, famous for the laughing notes of its Kookaburra bird, has now advanced its schedule by one full hour, and is being re- ceived with good volume between 9 and 11 p. m. every Saturday night. The Sunday morning transmission, from 2 to 6 a. m., will be moved up until next month.

Both 2ME and 3LR have been carrying out recent experimental programs in the eve- nings after 9 p. m., usually on Monday or Tuesday.

* * *

The European situation during the past seven days has been rather encouraging. At the present time GSD is by far the most reliable station from the other side of the Atlantic, having replaced GSB on the number five English transmission (daily from 3 to 5 p. m.), and also having replaced GSL on the number six broadcast (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, from 7 to 8 p. m.). GSD operates on 11.75 meg., and in addition to being on the air at the times mentioned

above, this station also carries the number one programs from Daventry, commencing at 8:30 p. m., daily. Although received well at the beginning of this transmission, GSD gradually fades out after 9 p. m., and usually becomes almost inaudible by sign -off time at 10:30.

Best results from France may still be se- cured between 5 and 8 p. m. on 11.71 meg., and Germany's DJD usually reaches maxi- mum volume just before sign -off at 7:30. Neither station, however, can compare with the excellent volume and quality of London's GSD.

* * *

It is interesting to note, in connection with the broadcasts from GSD, that during the number six transmission, the antenna is di- rected toward Canada, so that the radio waves reach the Pacific Coast from an east- erly direction between 7 and 8 p. m. At 8:30, however, the station is directed to Australia, so that the programs now reach us from the west, having traveled in opposite directions from London, and encircling the globe two different ways. But in spite of this change in direction, both broadcasts seem to reach this region with about the same signal strength.

* * *

As mid -summer approaches, the outlook for good South American reception is be- coming very dark. Nearly all transmitters on our sister continent operate on fre- quencies below 8.00 meg.-frequencies which require shorter days and cooler weather for satisfactory reception. However, HJIABB on 6.44 meg., YV5RMO on 5.85 meg., OAX4G on 6.23 meg., and a few of the other more powerful broadcasters are being heard fairly well after 6:30 p. m.

ti BROADCAST WEEKLY June 23-29

FANFARE By J. LESTER MALLOY

Bill Brokaw, KSFO's Midnight Vagabond, declared a Mother's Day all his own a few nights ago. And this is the way it happened: Ever since Brokaw has been broadcasting the midnight request hour, his most loyal fan has been a Mrs. B. of Oakland. Mrs. B. liked to stay up after hours and hear Bill play her favorite musical numbers. She tele- phoned him often for requests. And their frequent wire conversations gradually grew into a "blind" friendship. Recently Mrs. B. confided, over the telephone, that her birth- day was not far off. "My eighty-fifth!" she added, proudly. Bill promptly replied that he was not one to let an eighty-fifth anni- versary go unnoticed and asked the lady what she would like "best of all." "Well," said Mrs. B., just like that, "I've never been in any of these night clubs folks talk so much about." That settled it. Mr. Brokaw met his aged fan for the first time. And together they toured the night clubs. Not just two or three of the night spots-no, sir! The little old lady and her dashing young escort were out to see the town. And they did just that. Because eighty-fifth birthdays come but once in very few lifetimes and Mrs. B. had "never been in any of these night clubs folks talk so much about."

* * *

This little amateur went to market. And what a "market"! It includes appearances on Paul Whiteman's network extravaganza and a salary of $175 per week. The lucky girl is Sheila Chandler, who was discovered by Dean Maddux during one of his recent KYA amateur revues.

* * *

A thorough knowledge of California history is not Louise Taber's only claim to fame. The lady in question also knows her way about the kitchen. We discovered that after being a guest at one of her famous dinner parties last week. It was a real home -cooked orgy of chicken and shortcake that began at eight and went on and on and on! Thank you, Miss Taber!

* * *

The rumors that The Philistine will leave NBC have been confirmed. The popular commentator, who is Dr. Seth Maker in pri- vate life, will make his final appearance over NBC on July 5. Following a brief vacation, his sponsor will bring him back through dif- ferent channels. According to present plans, it is a choice between CBS and a Southern California chain.

Have you noticed the punch that charac- terizes the KPO Barbara Lee program, as now presented by the Town Reporter? Her sense of the dramatic and her fine handling of commercials has taken this show right out of the ranks of "just another woman's pro- gram" and turned it into something really worth while.

* * *

Shortwaves and remote rumors: When Frank Parker and Tommy Harris both chose "Why Do They Call It 'Gay Paree'?" as their last week's offerings, lots of folks decided in favor of Frank. . . . Ronald Graham, for- merly of KFRC, is clicking in no small way on the RKO lot in Hollywood.

Don Austin at KOMO-KJR One of the latest additions to the staff of

KOMO-KJR, is happy Don Austin, now an announcer on both stations.

He has been in radio for six years, begin- ning at station WOL, in Washington, D. C. Prior to then, Don played with the E. Forest Taylor stock company in Portland, and fol- lowed this with two and one-half years with the Duffy Players. In 1927 he joined the O. D. Woodward stock company in Kansas City and Detroit, followed this with a season on Broadway, summer stock in Dayton, Ohio, and back to Broadway in 1928 and 1929.

Austin next played with the National Theater Players of Washington, D. C., re- puted to be the greatest stock company in the United States. When the company closed, Don, through Senator Dill, became connected with WOL and radio has been his chosen field since.

The West Coast is Don's real home. Born in Pasco, Washington, and schooled in Port- land and Seattle, he attended the University of Washington, where he studied law and which he gave up for show business.

Hats, just ordinary everyday hats, should have no place in the radio picture, but many an NBC artist considers his chapeau an es- sential part of his broadcasting equipment. Walter Winchell and Floyd Gibbons wear their hats while broadcasting. Lennie Hay - ton, band leader, keeps a hat rack beside the podium. One minute he wears his hat and the next he sticks it on the rack. There is no reason for it-he just does! Joe Cook wears his throughout a show. Ed Wynn changes his at least a half dozen times dur- ing a broadcast.

When Gracie goes shopping she always buys a mouse in advance. She takes it along, drops it on the floor, and thus clears the aisles in the bargain counters.

The DX Corner A new Russian station has been reported

by several listeners on 9.59 meg. near 1:30 a. m. Like most other stations of the U. S. S. R., this broadcaster also employs a

woman announcer. * * *

London's commercial phone station GCS, working on a frequency of 9.02 meg. was heard several times on the Pacific Coast re- laying programs to New York between 8:30 and 9 p. m. WON of Rocky Point, New York, was the receiving station, and operated on 9.87 meg.

* * *

VE9CA of Calgary, Canada, better known as the relay station of CFCN. Calgary's "Voice of the Prairies," is now broadcasting news items every day at 9 p. m. A frequency of 6.03 meg, is being used, and excellent re- ception has been reported in all parts of the Pacific States.

* * *

DJB of Zeesen, Germany, has often been heard with quite a fair signal en 15.20 meg. just before signing off at 11 a. m. On sev- eral occasions recently this station returned to the air shortly after its regular sign -off and proceeded to broadcast experimental programs to the National Broadcasting Company until almost noon.

* * *

2R0 of Rome, Italy, is now reaching the Pacific slope of this country with a very weak signal near 6 p. m. A frequency of 9.64 meg. is being used at this time, and the transmission is directed primarily at South America.

* * *

A station announcing both as LSQ and as LSK3 is often on the air between 6 and 7

p. m. testing with phonograph records or calling PSK of Rio de Janeiro.. The trans- mitter is located in Buenos Aires and em- ploys a frequency of approximately 10.25 meg.

* * *

A new Colombian broadcaster seems to have landed on the 25 -meter band during the past week. It operates on about 11.98 meg., and is usually heard near 6 p. m.. giving a call which begins with the letters HJ3.

* * *

Still another station, and one which has not been identified as yet, broadcasts the same programs as YDA, and is usually heard on Sunday morning near 2 a. m. in the middle of the 25 -meter band.

You guessed it! It's "Bea Lillie" as done in clay by Rex Kerr, New York clay sculptor.

New Children's Program on KECA On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,

KECA, Los Angeles, presents "Once Upon a Time" at 5:45 p. m.

The series will comprise all of the best loved fairy tales of the world, including such stories as "The Little Red Hen," "Cinder- ella," "Jack and the Beanstalk." "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretel," and many others. The plays have been produced with a large and well -selected cast of charac- ters, and grown-ups as well as the children should find them excellent entertainment.

KECA is inaugurating a unique system in presenting these stories. Based on the fact that children like to hear the same story over and over again, they are presenting only one story a week, first heard on Monday evening and repeated on Wednesday and Friday.

Del White and his Hotel Senator orches- tra are at the World Cafe in San Diego. Thomas Lee signs with the California State Fair Committee to stage an elaborate his- torical pageant in conjunction with the State Exposition at Sacramento in September.

Lorelei Mystery is entering its most excit- ing part of the series. What to do with five million dollars in gold bullion is enough to keep almost anyone on the anxious seat. Especially in view of the fact that a gang of ruthless people are determined to get it for themselves.

Studio Whispers By GEORGE FISCHER

rir HE most amazing record of "star" mate - .11. rial on the air was hung up recently by KFWB, Warner Brothers' station in Holly-

wood. General Manager Gerald King, who boasts

more acquaintances in the movie world than any other radio station manager, upset his own record the other day when over seventy- five movie great bowed before the KFWB "mikes"!

It was all occasioned by the Warner -First National International Convention in the Ambassador Hotel.

Among those who appeared were: Harry, Jack and Albert Warner, George Brent. Kay Francis, Bette Davis, Paul Muni, Jimmy Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Joan Blondell, Warren William, Dolores Del Rio, Frank McHugh, Allen Jenkins, Josephine Hutchinson, Ann Dvorak, Everett Marshall, Jimmy Melton, Patricia Ellis, Phil Regan, Dorothy Dare, Wini Shaw, Bill Robinson, Warren and Dubin, Dixon and Wrubel, and Leo Forb- stein conducting his vitaphone recording orchestra.

Not in the limelight, but noticeably in the "driver's seat," was Frank Murphy, chief electrical engineer for Warner Brothers, and fondly called the "Daddy" of KFWB.

* * *

Under the Needle.-This week saw famous tunesmith Irving Berlin go the way of the recording route. Berlin, who has been writing songs for twenty years, finally suc- cumbed to a flattering offer made by the Brunswick Recording Company, whereby he will sing four of the numbers he wrote for "Top Hat," the new Ginger Rogers -Fred Astair musical. Also going "under the needle" are John Boles and Fred Astaire, likewise for Brunswick.

Margaret Screams as Villain Scrams Add to your list of odd occupations, radio

screaming. But that is one of the jobs of pretty,

brown -eyed, 18 -year -old Margaret Barry- and if you happen to pass her home in Seattle's Queen Anne district and hear her screaming, you will know she is only prac- ticing.

Screaming into a microphone is not her only röle, Margaret confessed. She acts the part of a newlywed on Saturday night and takes a grandmother's rôle the next day. One of her most recent parts was Catherine the Great. She can cry like a baby-and does, over the radio-or act the hoyden in a sophisticated drama.

She first started broadcasting a year ago, speaking over a local station on cosmetics. Then her uncle, Abe Brashen, popular radio violinist and orchestra leader, won her an audition at KOMO-KJR.

Gene Goldrup, control operator at KJBS, left June 21 for Honolulu, where he is to be technical director of KGMB.

At Wednesday evening's broadcast of "Tony and Gus," a Miss Georgia Simmons did her part of a psychic with such profes- sional aplomb that several members of the cast asked her where she ever caught on to the trick. Miss Simmons explained that she had been a medium in a Honolulu carnival show for two years. She was known as Madame Kahuna, which in the Kanaka tongue means "witch." Prior to that, she worked in a conservative stock and bond house in Los Angeles.

"Down here," he writes, "a fellow just lies under a tree all day. If he gets hungry he shakes clown some fruit; if anybody comes up to talk business he just shoots poisoned arrows at him."
