PARENTS’ HANDBOOKATTENDANCEParents are asked to notify the School Office before 8:30am (506.847.8224 or email [email protected]) if their child will be late or absent from school. The missing of lunch, classes, chapel, sports, advisor period or study period is not permitted.
THE SCHOOL WEBSITE - WWW.RNS.CCTeachers post course outlines, assignments, class notes, quizzes, tests and resource material on the website. By viewing the website frequently, parents can monitor their child's homework. School activities and events are also listed in the online calendar. Please check it frequently to keep up to date.
HOMEWORKStudents must spend a significant amount of time on their school work outside of class time. Grade 12 students are expected to study three hours per day outside of class time. Senior School boarders study in their rooms for a minimum of two hours per evening, while Middle School boarders spend 1.5 hours on evening study. Evening study periods are supervised by the teacher on duty, Sunday through Thursday. Day students are expected to spend an equal amount of time on their studies at home. They may be asked to study on campus if their Effort Grades are poor. Students are required to meet with their Advisors each day. It is the student’s responsibility to attend these sessions and to seek help from subject teachers when needed.
EFFORT GRADES AND CUMULATIVE REPORTSEffort Grades are a key part of providing essential information on the dedication and commitment of students in each of their classes. Students are graded with a 1, 2 or a 3 (3-Exceptionally Dedicated; 2-Performing Well; 1-Limited Involvement). Effort Grades are reported five times each year by every teacher for every student and are securely posted on each student’s portal. A full report of academic standing is made at the end of each reporting period. Parents can access this information by visiting the school’s website using the login information they receive in September.
GOOD STANDINGStudents will qualify for Good Standing if they are deemed by their Houseparents, Advisors and Teachers to have shown a high level of social responsibility and community consciousness, and academic responsibility.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTStudents who achieve an academic average of at least 80% will be named to the Scholars’ List and will be entitled to wear a Scholar’s Tie. THE MIDDLE SCHOOL The Middle School encompasses Grades 6, 7 and 8. The Middle School, which is located on the second floor of School House, consists of classrooms and student lockers. Each student’s day begins with Chapel at 8:15am. Classes begin at 8:40am, and Homeroom Period takes place at 10:05am. The academic component of the school day ends at 4:00pm.
Middle School Homeroom Period will be used as a time when teachers can ensure that students are meeting with success during the day, and that they are organized enough to complete their homework. During this time, students will be able to receive organizational support from their teachers, and will learn to make effective use of their lockers. They may visit their lockers during formal breaks in the day.
HOLIDAYS & TRAVELPunctual, daily attendance is fundamental for every student. Each school day is important; therefore, a travel day has been designated at the beginning of Christmas Break and March Break to allow students to book flights so as not to miss any class time. It is the responsibility of parents to confirm plans for those students not going home for breaks. Please see the Boarders’ Handbook for a list of available options such as school trips. The Boarders’ Handbook (available online on the portal) also explains the procedure for obtaining permission for boarders to stay at the homes of friends or relatives.
Visits: Parents are very welcome to visit their children at any time. Students may receive permission from their Houseparents to go off campus or to take an overnight leave with parents.
LEAVING THE CAMPUSLeave for Day Students: Day students are permitted to leave the campus only at the end of the day’s activities. Special permission must be obtained from the School Office if a student wishes to leave the hill part way through the day. Students leaving early or arriving late during the school day must check in at the School Office.
LEAVE FOR BOARDERS Mid-week leave: Only prefects may request a mid-week leave (leaving the hill after academic and sports requirements are met and missing study hall in their residence). The prefect must be on Good Standing and he/she must request the leave 24 hours in advance. Prefects must return to their residence no later than 10:00pm.
Wednesday leave: Boarders needing to run an errand during the week such as getting a haircut or purchasing supplies for a school project may request such leave on Wednesdays only. Boarders may leave at 2pm if they are on Good Standing, or after Extra Help if they are not. All boarders who are off the hill on Wednesdays must return to the campus by 7:30pm.
Weekend Leave: Boarders may request leave on Saturdays and Sundays for trips to the mall, movie theatre, restaurants, etc. (restrictions apply; please see Boarders’ Handbook for full details).
Overnight Leave: If traveling to their own home for a special family weekend, boarders may leave on Friday after sports and return on Sunday in time for Study Hall. Boarders may request leave to stay overnight at the home of a day student friend for one night only; it must be Saturday night. Boarders staying overnight at the home of a friend may leave on Saturday after lunch, and return to campus Sunday by 6pm. Note: overnight leave at a friend’s
home will be restricted to two guests per visit, and no more than once a month at the same destination. All overnight requests must be submitted to the Houseparent no later than Thursday at 9:00 pm so that proper permissions may be obtained.
Consequences for Leaving the Campus without Permission: In all cases, students must obtain the proper permission to leave the campus. Failure to do so will result in “gates”.
COMMUNITY LIFE AND EXPECTATIONSThe conduct of students is expected to reflect the standards and responsibilities consistent with membership in the school. Living within the “spirit of the law” is part of every student’s mandate. All students are expected to make a positive contribution to the way of life within our community. Any major breach (e.g. purchase, possession or consumption of alcohol or illicit drugs, smoking, harassment, theft, missing a school activity, or leaving the dorm without permission) can lead to disciplinary action, which may include, but is not limited to, expulsion or suspension. Minor breaches result in a school grounding called “gates”. Our mission statement is written at the front of this calendar.
LEADERSHIPDeveloping leadership skills is an integral part of student life at Rothesay Netherwood School. The prefectship program is designed to present each Grade 12 student with the opportunity to assume a leadership role. With a staff advisor for support, each Grade 12 student chooses an area of responsibility such as sports, yearbook, theatre, the environment or the Chapel. Each prefectship is an appointment made by the Head of School; each student is expected to take seriously the responsibility that he or she has been offered.

understanding of the global community and their sense of responsible citizenship. A wide array of outdoor adventures is offered to students in all grades, allowing everyone to develop outdoor skills and to experience something new. These adventures include activities such as dog sledding, kayaking, canoeing, camping and hiking.
CO-CURRICULAR OPTIONSAll students are involved in the three co-curricular terms at RNS. Students have the opportunity to choose the option that best interests them, the only regulation being that one term is to be athletics-based. RNS offers a wide range of competitive teams, recreational activities, and arts and service options, some of which change each year. The athletic program promotes health and physical awareness through teaching the values of teamwork: co-operation, commitment and a strong sense of the importance of competing fairly. The goal is to give our students the experience and confidence they require in order to pursue sports as a lifelong lifestyle. The recreational program is designed to teach the basic skills and rules of numerous sports while enabling students who may not be as athletically inclined to join an activity they can enjoy. RNS competes in the following leagues: NBIAA, CAIS ACIS and NAPHA.
DAY STUDENTSDay students and boarding students are required to take part in morning chapel, extracurricular activities, occasional Saturday morning activities, and special events such as New River Beach Day, and several other school-wide weekend and evening activities. Day students are welcome to stay for supper at the School if an evening event is planned. They may also arrange to study on the hill with the boarders. Senior day girls are members of Gregory House and have a locker room in either Quinn or Netherwood House. Middle School students have lockers beside their homerooms. While on campus, day students are
expected to follow the boarders’ routine. If day students are on the hill during study hours in the evening, they are required to report to the duty teacher and to be in the appropriate residence by 7:55pm. Day students are not to be in any boarders’ dorm rooms unless they have been properly signed-in.
VEHICLES ON CAMPUSAll students are required to park their vehicles behind Memorial Arena in the designated student parking area. All boarders must receive prior permission from the Director of Student Life before bringing any vehicle to campus. Please refer to the Student Handbook for policies regarding vehicle privileges.
PERSONAL POSSESSIONS / CLOTHINGPlease remember: all personal items, including clothing, brought on campus must be clearly labelled with the student’s name. The School is not liable for the personal possessions of students. If students bring items such as stereos, computers, bicycles or cameras, parents must extend their insurance to cover them. It is highly inadvisable for students to bring extremely valuable items to school.
Every piece of clothing coming to Rothesay Netherwood School must be clearly labelled with the student’s name. Name tags will be ordered on request; however, a marking pen works well.
STUDENT LAUNDRYLaundering service is mandatory for all boarding students in Grades 6 through 8; this service is optional for students in Grades 9 through 12. For more information, including costs, please refer to the Boarders’ Handbook. We highly recommend this service. Laundry is picked up weekly and returned the following day, clean and folded. Each residence is equipped with its own laundry facilities for students’ use. Note: Each article of clothing must be marked with the student’s name.
