Introduction to NetAct

©Nokia Siemens Networks 5 (22)

1 Introduction to NetAct Nokia Siemens Networks NetAct™ is a network and service managementframework that addresses the operator challenges to handle more network

elements, larger networks, greater complexity and explosive growth in trafficand data expected in future networks.

NetAct can manage both the network and services in a centralized manner, meaning that the operator can view all network element failures, service qualityindicators and traffic from one single screen.

The ability to collect, integrate and utilize the information about the status andperformance of all network elements and services is the cornerstone of NetAct.Fluent alarm handling, reporting capabilities as well as network optimizationfunctionality minimize the network downtime and congestion, optimize thenetwork capacity and create the basis for efficient network operations.

NetAct is a total OSS package including common network functionalities as wellas sophisticated tools for service assurance and optimization.

1.1 Global Reporter Overview

Global Reporter is the NetAct solution for long-term performance managementdata storage and reporting available in the NetAct Global Cluster. It providesaccurate information on network wide performance, usage and quality as well

as fault and configuration parameter history.

The Global Reporter allows the operators to view and analyze the networkperformance, with data coming from multiple sources. Raw data is translated tomeaningful information that is visualized in graphical and textual reports.

The solution provides both regional and national performance managementdatabases as well as reporting tools for the creation of ad-hoc and on-demandreports at regional and national levels. Performance alarms based on variousthreshold criteria support the network management in an efficient manner.

The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are the most important indicators of network performance. By producing KPI reports on a regular basis or on

demand it is possible to detect the first signs of performance degradation andprevent the development of critical network problems. KPIs on network levelcan be used, for example, for analyzing performance trends, on RNC level forlocating problems and on BTS level for troubleshooting specific BTSs. GlobalReporter provides a comprehensive set of reports based on predefined KPIs. The predefined KPIs can also be used by creating customized reports withtools.

Global Reporter is optimized with respect to scalability & performance toefficiently handle large networks & data volumes.

3.2 Restrictions and Limitations

The following restrictions and limitations are applicable:

The feature “Report Distribution”, as seen in the GR SAT manual, will only beavailable based on a customization request.

Nokia 3G RAN partitioning is a customized option and has to be requestedseparately.

Nokia 3G RAN Hourly / Monthly aggregation feature is a customized option and hasto be requested separately.

Oracle 10g Database upgrade is supported as a separate CD.

In NetAct there are open defects which are listed in Generic Failure Report.

3.3 Global Reporter 4.8 CD1 Release Compatibil ity

GR4.8 CD1 compatibility matrix is updated on a monthly basis. It is available forcustomers through an Account, Care Manager or Product Manager.

3.4 Fault Management and Maintenance

Change Delivery

Corrections to the GR4.8 CD1 release are delivered mainly in separate CDs. Alsopriority correction deliveries and hot fixes or other workaround solutions can bedelivered for urgent severe problems. GR4.8 CD1 CDs and priority correctiondeliveries will be published in NOLS.

Technical Note

A Technical Note (TN) is a workaround solution for the problem. If there is a knownproblem in some supported system that requires no change of physical entities(binaries, text files etc) and can be fixed by the means of configuring, a TechnicalNote can be created. Technical Notes are available in NOLS.

Generic Failure Report

The NetAct Generic Failure Report is a summary of outstanding system faultscontaining the problem description and the target correction schedule. By defaultopen critical and major (“A” and “B” class) faults at the release date (start of volumedeliveries), “A” and “B” class faults reported by customers and selective othersignificant faults are included in this report. Most of the faults related to OSS4.1upgrade performed by Nokia Siemens Networks installation engineers are excluded. Those faults will be fixed as soon as possible in the upgrade tools and documents.NetAct GFR report is updated and published in NOLS once a month.
