Dear Readers, Greetings ! I am happy to share my thoughts with you through this VSI Bulletin Vol. 20(2) issue of April to June 2020. In the last three months, we are passing through an unprecedented situation that brought the world to collectively combat the spread of a COVID-19 pandemic, putting economies on hold and changing everyday life & work for their communities. The sugar season 2019-20 as reported by STAI is almost at fag end and the sugar production is likely to be 27 MT against consumption of 24 MT. With exports of 5 MT, the opening stock with the industry would be 12.5 MT as on 1 st Oct 2020 against 14.5 MT as on 1 st Oct 2019 which would be good enough to meet 6 months of the country’s consumption. In Maharashtra, as reported by ISMA, 146 sugar mills are involved crushing season and they sugar production till May 2020 was 60.87 lakh tons which is almost 46.3 lakh less than last year. Going forward for sustainability and profitability, the industry should ponder upon emulating Brazilian formula of having flexible factories wherein they easily switch between sugar/ethanol productions depending on the price premium of one over another. The Govt. on its part (RM Devarumath) Editor to encourage industry has allowed production of ethanol from all the sources of sugar. In this context, notification dated 13 th May 2020 advised sugar mills to augment their ethanol production capacities. VSI is drawing future course of activities for the Association and we are also awaiting for the government guidelines for holding large gathering events. Accordingly we shall be communicating the dates for the events/training in due course of time, keeping in view the safety, wellbeing of members of sugarcane growers and other stakeholders. Please stay safe by taking necessary precautions, maintain social distance for the safety of your near and dear ones. With regards,

The European Commission has signed the GrantAgreement forinvesting 17 M Euro to WATER MINING,a project to demonstrate innovative water resourcesolutions. Demonstrations in Cyprus, Spain, Portugal,Italy and The Netherlands will be built to show novelefficient ways to reclaim nutrients, minerals, energyand water from industrial and urban wastewater andseawater. The public-private consortium consists of38 public and private partners and 4 linked thirdparties in 12countries and is led by the Delft Universityof Technology.

The project aims to provide examples for real-worldimplementation of the Water Framework Directive tohelp the transition to Circular Economy, incorporatingEU Green Deal packages. The demonstrations willintegrate selected innovative technologies developedby partners and from previously funded EU projects. The value-added end-products (water, platformchemicals, energy, nutrients and minerals) areexpected to provide regional resource supplies to fueleconomic developments.

Mark van Loosdrecht (professor EnvironmentalBiotechnology, TU Delft) “Water is essential forhuman health, certainly in urban areas. Flushingsanitary waste out of the city is one of the mainfunctions. This program will aid to recover the waterand convert waste components to resources, therebycontributing to a stronger circular economy.”

Unique feature of the project is that theimplementation of the novel technology will be co-designed with a range of stakeholders. Through ScienceMusea such as NEMO in The Netherlands and LivingLabs throughout Europe we also invite public input inconsidering the social impacts and concerns. Withaugmented technology we will present and discuss the

science behind the technology, the measuredecological footprint and the possible social impacts.

“We will organise over 24 workshops with experts, policy makers, industry, civil communities and thepublic to show the innovations and discuss theimplications such as ecological footprint, local changesand consequences” says Patricia Osseweijer, professorBiotechnology and Society, TU Delft and coordinatorof the project. “Their input will be used to improve theinnovations and their implementation in society. I amreally looking forward to this process.”

Novel technology for waste water treatment anddesalination also requires new rules and regulationand business models. Together with industry, citycouncils and regional water organisations we willagree and develop new policies and business models.Collaboration will be key to reduce costs and increaseefficiency and social benefits.

Dr. Dimitris Xevgenos who is part of the coordinatingteam with Mark and Patricia: “Having been workingon the exploitation of alternative water resources andthe circular economy through brines since 2010, ithas been made clear to me that solutions need asystemic innovation approach to ensure marketexploitation and social embedding.”

VSI is the only Indian partner in this project. VSI willinvolved in testing and operation of lab scale demoand pilot scale units based on technologies developedthrough “water mining” project at Sugar mills anddistilleries in India.

WATER MINING aims to be an example for socialembedding of innovative solutions in a wide spectrumof technology applications. The project will start 1September 2020.

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is an infectiousdisease caused by severe acute respiratory syndromecoronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a strain of coronavirus. The first cases were seen in Wuhan, China, in lateDecember 2019 before spreading globally, with morethan nine millionpositive cases and morethan 4 lakhs deaths nowconfirmed. The currentoutbreak was officiallyrecognized as apandemic by the WorldHealth Organization(WHO) on 11 March2020.

The World HealthOrganization originally called this illness “novelcoronavirus-infected pneumonia (NCIP)”, and the virusitself had been provisionally named “2019 novelcoronavirus (2019-nCoV)”. On 11 February 2020, theWHO formally renamed the clinical condition COVID-19 (a shortening of CoronaVirus Disease-19). Thename “coronavirus” comes from the crown-likeprojections on their surfaces. “Corona” in Latin means“halo” or “crown.”

Coronaviruses are zoonotic. This means they firstdevelop in animals before being transmitted tohumans. For the virus to be transmitted from animalsto humans, a person has to come into close contactwith an animal that carries the infection. Researchersbelieve that the virus may have been passed frombats to another animal — either snakes or pangolins— and then transmitted to humans. This transmissionlikely occurred in the open food market in Wuhan,China. Common signs of infection include respiratorysymptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and

breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infectioncan cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratorysyndrome, kidney failure and even death. The timefrom exposure to onset of symptoms is typicallyaround five days, but may range from two to fourteen

days. The virus isprimarily spread betweenpeople during closecontact, most oftenv i a s m a l l d r o p l e t s produced by coughing,sneezing, and talking.

It is possible that personcould acquire SARS-CoV-2 if he touches his

mouth, nose, or eyes after touching a surface or objectthat has the virus on it. However, this is not thoughtto be the main way that the virus spreads. The Centresfor Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendthat all people wear cloth face masks in public placeswhere it is difficult to maintain a 6-foot (2-meter)distance from others. This will help slow the spreadof the virus from asymptomatic people and peoplewho do not know that they have contracted it. Peopleshould wear cloth face masks while continuing topractice physical distancing.

Authoritative conclusion of COVID-19 requires apositive RT-PCR test. No successful treatment orimmunization exists at present, in spite of the factthat dexamethasone, a steroid agent, has beenappeared to extraordinarily improve results in the mostdebilitated patients. Although there is no vaccineavailable to prevent COVID-19, you can take steps toreduce your risk of infection.

WHO and CDC recommend following theseprecautions for avoiding COVID-19:

· Avoid large events and mass gatherings.· Avoid close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2

meters) with anyone who is sick or hassymptoms.

· Stay home as much as possible and keepdistance between yourself and others (withinabout 6 feet, or 2 meters), especially if youhave a higher risk of serious illness. Keep inmind some people may have COVID-19 andspread it to others, even if they don’t havesymptoms or don’t know they have COVID-19.

· Wash hands often with soap and water for atleast 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-basedhand sanitizer that contains at least 60%alcohol.

· Cover face with a cloth face mask in publicspaces, such as the grocery store, where it’sdifficult to avoid close contact with others, especially if in an area with ongoingcommunity spread. Only use nonmedicalcloth masks-surgical masks and N95respirators should be reserved for health careproviders.

· Cover mouth and nose with elbow or a tissuewhen you cough or sneeze. Throw away theused tissue. Wash your hands right away.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.· Avoid sharing dishes, glasses, towels, bedding

and other household items if you’re sick.· Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, such

as doorknobs, light switches, electronics andcounters, daily.

· Stay home from work, school and public areasif you’re sick, unless you’re going to getmedical care. Avoid public transportation, taxis and ride-sharing if you’re sick.

“National Institute of V irology, Pune, India hassuccessfully developed the 1st indigenous anti-SARS-

CoV-2 human IgG ELISA test kit for antibody detectionof COVID-19. ICMR has partnered with Zydus Cadilafor mass-scale production of the ELISA test kits. Afterthe development at ICMR-NIV, Pune, technology hasbeen transferred for mass-scale production to ZydusCadila, which is an innovation-driven globalhealthcare company. Zydus Cadila has proactivelytaken up the challenge to expedite the approvals andcommercial production of the ELISA test kits so thatthese can be made available for the use at theearliest. The test is named as “COVID KAVACH ELISA”.This is a perfect example of “Make in India” in recordtime.

The majority of the tests being conducted in Indiaand worldwide are RT-PCR, which requires nasal andthroat swabs and are used to directly detect thepresence of the virus rather than antibodies. The testdetects the virus’s RNA, which will be present in thebody before antibodies form or symptoms of thedisease are present, and tells whether or not someonehas the infection very early on. The test proceeds byconverting the RNA to DNA through a process called‘reverse transcription’, before detecting the virus. While RT-PCR can detect the virus in asymptomaticpersons, the tests do present a false negative in about30 per cent of cases. Patients are, therefore, testedtwice before being confirmed as non-infectious.Antibody tests are fast, inexpensive, and can be usedto gauge the extent of infection within a community.Unlike RT-PCR, antibody tests require a blood sampleto determine whether the human body has antibodiesfor coronavirus.

Some researchers and doctors have started usingplasma from people recovering from COVID-19 to treatothers who have developed the disease. In the searchfor an effective treatment for COVID-19, an oldmethod of fighting infectious diseases has recentlyresurfaced: transfusions with convalescent plasma.Plasma is a component of blood. This method has asimple premise. The blood of people who have

recovered from an infection contains antibodies.Antibodies are molecules that have learned torecognize and fight the pathogens, such as viruses, that have caused disease. Doctors can separateplasma, one of the blood components that containsuch antibodies, and administer it to people whosebodies are currently fighting an infectious disease. This can help their immune systems reject thepathogen more efficiently. Recently, researchers andhealthcare professionals have been looking into thepossibility of using this method to treat people withCOVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by theSARS-CoV-2 virus. In plasma therapy, the antibody richplasma from a recovered patient is extracted andadministered to a patient.
