Something You Should Know

Coming into Full Communion Fr. Michael J. Harkins

I n these days of aids to help find one’s family tree, it’s not uncommon to discover the cousin you never knew. Things work out well and the “stranger”

becomes a welcomed and full member of the family.

In the last article we followed the path of someone never-baptized who comes into the Catholic Church. Now we take a look at the journey of a baptized non-Catholic Christian into the full communion of the Catholic Church.

It is clear from the New Testament and the first centuries of the Church’s life that Christ the Lord established one Church.

Most unfortunately, over the centuries major divisions occurred in this one Church founded by the Lord Jesus Christ. Even more unfortunately, these divisions have led to a number of further divisions and subdivi-sions.

Clearly, the Holy Spirit was the principal guide for the bishops gathered in the Sec-ond Vatican Council. After centuries of mu-tual misunderstanding (to put it mildly), the bishops of the Council reminded all Chris-tians of the Lord’s institution of one, holy, catholic (that is, universal), and apostolic Church.

The Council also taught that this one Church of Christ “subsists in the Catholic Church.” (“Catholic,” here means the Church in communion with the Pope, the bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter, chosen by Christ as first pastor of his whole Church.)

In this statement, the term “subsists” means that the fullness of Christ’s Church is found in the Catholic Church.

Beyond the confines of the one Church of Christ, non-Catholic Christians also share communion of the Catholic Church, but not

fully and in varying degrees. First among these are the various Ortho-

dox Churches. They are properly called “Churches,” for, although they are not in communion with the pope, they retain apos-tolic succession, all the sacraments, and many other aspects of Christ’s Church.

“Ecclesial communities,” Protestant de-nominations, also belong to this one Church.

All Christian Churches and ecclesial communities are divided but truly share a very great deal, most importantly “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Eph 4:5).

All Christians believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and share much else. Anyone who is baptized with water “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” is validly baptized, the same as any Catholic.

Valid baptism can never be “undone,” and therefore cannot be repeated.

What happens when a baptized non-Catholic withes to become a Catholic?

The process is straightforward and simi-lar to path of an unbaptized person coming to the Catholic Church.

While faith in Jesus Christ and, to vary-ing degrees, a share in the Catholic faith, such a person will receive formation and in-struction, as needed, in what Catholics be-lieve and in how we live those beliefs.

At the end of this process, the candidate is not (cannot be) baptized, as this has al-ready happened. Then there is a profession of the faith, a recitation of the creed and ac-ceptance of “all that the Catholic Church be-lieves and teaches as revealed by God.”

Then, unless already validly confirmed, the person is received into full communion of the Catholic Church, confirmed, and re-ceives the Eucharist.
