Faith Sharing Questions Theme of this week’s Gospel: Once again Jesus speaks to His disciples in parables comparing heaven to buried treasure, fine pearls and good fish. How confusing do you think that was for them? Adults: Do you feel that your lifestyle assures you that you will enter the kingdom of heaven or are there changes you need to make? If you had to identify one stumbling block in your life that could keep you from entering heaven, what would that be? Teens: Do you ever think of what the end of the world will be like? Ask you friends what they think. Children: If you could see Jesus in person today, what would you say to Him? What do you think He would say to you?

Next Sunday: August 6, 2017

The Transfiguration of the Lord, Cycle A In our Liturgical Calendar we are now in the period called “Ordinary Time”. The season is called “Ordinary” because it is “ordinated”, that is, counted: second Sunday, third Sunday, etc. The Liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green, unless there is a special feast. Next Sunday is just such a special feast, The Transfiguration of the Lord. In our Liturgical year, The Transfiguration is paired with the feast of The Exaltation of Holy Cross (September 14th), which is forty days later. This reflects a tradition that the transfiguration occurred forty days before Jesus was crucified and Jesus intended this prefiguration of His resurrection to give courage and strength to His disciples.

Gospel Reading (Matthew 17:1-9): The Gospel of Matthew is featured in Cycle A, and so our Gospel reading is the account of The

Parish Worship

Called According to His Purpose When I first got the call to become a deacon in the Church that Jesus Christ founded I resisted it. I had my reasons: I was looking for something else to do. It did not fit the plans that I had for my life. I was not good enough and I thought that it would take too much of my time. All reasons were valid and all of them were wrong. .God does not give up. God does not say you are right and I am wrong. God keeps at it. I heard the call at least three times and twice I rejected it. I thought I knew myself and I thought that I was fundamentally unsuited for the diaconate. I was not energetic. I hated to volunteer for things and I wanted to keep my time for the things that I wanted to do. I was selfish about that. There was no way that I would give up the life that I had for what God was calling me to do. God did not give up. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knew that I had a deep desire to be close to Him and to serve Him. George Bernard Shaw said once that the true joy in life is to be used “for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.” There is no mightier purpose than the purpose that God has in mind for each one of us. God is calling each one of us to the particular purpose that we were made for. If we listen to Him and follow Him, He will make a way for us. If you think that you do not have the time for what God wants you to do then put Him to the test and you will be surprised by how the time will open up for you. If you think that you do not have the skills to do what God is calling you to do then put Him to the test and you will be amazed by the skills that you will find. If you think that you are not qualified for what God is calling you to do then remember, “God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the ones that He calls.” Listen to your heart. Listen for that still, small voice that is trying to reach you. Ask and wait for the answer. Once you surrender to what God is

asking you to do, you will find joy and understand why the merchant sold all that he had to buy the pearl of great price. Deacon Gary Scott

Transfiguration from the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus takes Peter, James and John and leads them up “a high mountain” and He is transfigured before them and “His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light.” Then Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with Jesus. Moses is representative of the Law of the Old Testament (the Pentateuch) and Elijah is representative of the Prophets. Then, a “bright cloud” casts a shadow over them and from the cloud comes a voice that says, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” The disciples are afraid and Jesus reassures them as He does so many times, saying “Rise, and do not be afraid.” First Reading (Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14): The word “apocalypse” comes from a Greek word that means “to pull back a veil.” It is translated in English as “revelation.” Apocalypse also refers to a genre of writing that “pulls back a veil” and reveals some otherwise unknowable scene or vision, often with fantastic detail. The Book of Daniel in the Old Testament, written during the harsh Greek occupation of Israel, makes use of this apocalyptic genre. In this passage, Daniel describes a vision of an Ancient One (God the Father?) seated in a throne room or court of law. Later in the vision, “One like a Son of man” (Jesus Christ?) comes on the clouds of heaven and is presented to the Ancient One, from whom he receives dominion, glory, and kingship. While apocalyptic literature has often been used to frighten people over the years, its real purpose is to inspire hope, for in the end, its visions describe triumphs of goodness. “His dominion is an everlasting that shall not be taken away, the kingship shall not be destroyed.” Second Reading (2 Peter 1:16-19): In this passage, Peter reminds his readers that he was an “eyewitness of His majesty. For He [Jesus] received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to Him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” Peter’s own words describe his experience of The Transfiguration: “We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain.”

Saint of the Week

Ignatius of Loyola Iñigo Lopez de Loyola was born on October 23, 1491 in Azpeitia Spain, which is in the Basque part of that country (in the north of Spain near the French border). He was the youngest of 13 children. As an aristocrat he was interested in the life of a soldier and read the romantic stories about knights, and when he became a soldier he amused himself by fighting duels. He went to war in 1509 when Spain was attacked by a French and Navarrese army that attacked the fortress at Pamplona. Iñigo was badly wounded in the leg. This incident would change his life. While recovering he read Da Vita Christi by Ludolph of Saxony (a 14th century German theologian). Ludolph’s book asked the reader to place himself in the place where the action is happening, at the manger, at the wedding at Cana and on Golgotha. Iñigo would later use this method as part of the Spiritual Exercises.

As he recovered Iñigo read more about the life of Christ and about the saints. When he recovered he took his military gear and hung it before an image of the Virgin Mary at a monastery and went to live in a cave for several months, living as an ascetic. He then went to the Holy Land but was not allowed to stay. He and the companions he had begun to attract went to Madrid and then travelled to Paris where he studied and became known as Ignatius. He earned a master’s degree and became known as “Master Ignatius.”

It was in Paris in 1534 that he gathered six of his companions; Francis Xavier, Alfonso Salmeron, Diego Laynez, and Nicholas Bobadilla, all Spanish; Peter Faber, a Frenchman; and Simão Rodrigues of Portugal. These men began the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. Ignatius of Loyola was the first Superior General of the order. One of the key elements of what is called Ignatian spirituality are the Spiritual Exercises which is a 28 day series of prayers and meditations designed to help the practitioner to discern Jesus in his life.

The Jesuits became key players in the Counter Reformation and became a powerful force in much of Europe. They also served as missionaries all over the world. Our current pope, Francis, is a Jesuit. (Read about the Jesuits in Canada and the northern part of the US and the Reductions or missions in South America.) Jesuits have contributed theologians, scientists and educators. They were also suppressed or expelled from many countries during the 18th century. The Jesuits were even suppressed by Pope Clement XIV in 1773.

Ignatius died in Rome on July 31, 1556. He was beatified in 1609 and canonized in 1622. You are encouraged to read about this saint, the Jesuits or to try the Spiritual Exercises (There are several good books available to help guide you). Ignatius of Loyola’s feast day is July 31st.

Saint Agnes/Mike Moffitt Basketball

Tournament The final figures are in from the basketball tournament held earlier this year. This was the 26th annual Saint Agnes/Mike Moffitt tournament. This year’s tournament made a profit of $6,618.26. This was $909.75 more than in 2016. Proceeds are used to fund two, $500 scholarships to a Catholic High School in Ray Bosse’s memory. One is for a boy and one is for a girl, in the 8th grade at the time of the tournament. This year, one scholarship is to Covington Catholic and the other to Notre Dame Academy. The remaining proceeds this year are being split between our school and our Athletic Boosters. Each will receive $2,759.13.

Thanks to all who volunteered at the tournament. A very special thanks to all who serve on the tournament committee: Jack Abeln, Sara Dickman Bassini, Derrick Bosse, Rick Brungs, Dale Dickman, Joe Michels, Jeff Moffitt, Mike Moffitt, Ron Muck and Bob Ruschman. Many of these committee members have served for many years.

Beyond the financial success of the tournament, it is an event that is always a success among the players, coaches, families and the larger community. – Father Mark Keene

Alliance For Catholic Urban Education

(ACUE): Special Collection This weekend we welcome Ms. Jamie Schroder to our parish. Jamie is the chancellor for our diocese. She will speak at each Mass on behalf of our diocesan mission of education in the inner city areas of our diocese. This mission goes by the acronym “ACUE.” There will be a special collection in support of ACUE after the regular collection. Registered parishioners should have received a letter and donation envelope in the mail a few weeks ago, and may have already donated. If you have not already made a donation, please consider doing so. Education is the best long-term solution to poverty and many of the challenges to come with poverty. Please be as generous as you can. –Fr. Mark Keene

RCIA ATTENTION ALL WHO ARE NOT CATHOLIC OR ARE NON- PRACTICING CATHOLICS! Are you searching for… a deeper relationship with God, a sense of belonging in a faith community, a greater understanding of your mission in life? Have you ever been curious about the difference between the Catholic and Protestant Bibles, about how Catholics relate to Mary and the saints, about what Catholics believe in regard to the moral issues of our day? Our parish offers opportunities for you to ask any perplexing or difficult questions you may have about the Church in informal sessions. Please join us for information session (no obligation, just questions and answers) about the Catholic faith next Sunday, August 6th after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the Rectory Conference Room (or come to a repeated session on August 20th). The session will be held under the deck on the big parking lot side of Church. Please come and learn about the blessings of our holy Catholic faith. ATTENTION ALL PARISHIONERS! Our Saint Agnes parish needs you to invite people to consider becoming Catholic! We are called by our Baptism to draw people into our Catholic faith family. Please consider volunteering as a team member, or a future sponsor. The great gift of your Catholic faith is meant to be shared. If you know anyone who is unbaptized, is baptized in another faith, or is baptized Catholic but not fully initiated, please invite them to the RCIA. We are always welcoming new inquirers and new team members. For more information call the Parish Office at 431-1802 or email [email protected].

Car Break-ins We are again having a problem with people's cars being broken into while parked in our lot. This happens on weekdays and Sundays, during Mass, meetings and other events. Please be careful to make sure your car is locked and that nothing of value is left on the seats or is otherwise visible. If you are a woman and you exit your car without a purse, anyone watching might assume you left it in your car. Likewise, be careful about being too conspicuous about “hiding things” in your car after you have parked. If you see anything or anyone acting suspiciously (watching people) in our lot, please call the police. – Father Mark Keene

SAINT AGNES CHURCH JULY 30, 2017

FORT WRIGHT, KENTUCKY

Dear Parishioners:

St. Agnes’ third annual Oktoberfest Festival is less than 90 days away! Building on two very successful events, the 2017 Festival will be held the first full weekend in October [10/6 (Friday) - 10/8 (Sunday)]. Proceeds once again will directly benefit the school and parish. Like the first two events, the 2017 Festival will feature a great selection of food, beer and refreshments, live music (3 bands this year, one each night!), fun booths, games, rides for young kids and teenagers, and a silent auction. Our grand raffle offers a chance to win a “Trip of a Lifetime”!

We are asking St. Agnes Parishioners to consider supporting our Silent Auction. Specifically, we are looking for donations — event tickets, gift cards, new merchandise, getaway trips, etc. If you have tickets, or access to them through your employer, friends, family, etc., we’d love to hear from you! As you think about connections you have, or people you may know, here are some ideas of things that do well: * Tickets/suites for sporting events - Reds Opening Day, Bengals games, UK/UC/Xavier basketball, OSU and ND football, Cleveland Cavs games, the Kentucky Derby, the W & S Open, FC Cincinnati, the Final Four, etc. * Limos and plans for: a trip/tour along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, VIP tour and tasting of a brewery like Mad Tree or Rhinegeist, dinner at a restaurant like Jeff Ruby’s or Boca, etc. * Tickets/access to events at the Aronoff, Taft Theater, Riverbend, the WEBN barge for the Labor Day Fireworks, etc. * Use of a condo/cabin/apartment in places like Hilton Head, Gatlinburg, Chicago, Florida, NYC, etc.

++ Please note that tickets, trips, and plans for Silent Auction items should be secured for dates any time after the Oktoberfest dates — no earlier than 10/9/17. It is okay/desired to arrange for items in 2018.

We raised $20,000 from our Silent Auction last year, thanks to over 6,000 in attendance from our local and surrounding communities. This helped provide updated school technology, tuition assistance, added support for art and sports programs, and updated equipment for the Parish and the playground. Thank you! With your help this fall, proceeds will continue to support the areas listed, as well as improve and expand our enrichment programs for the 2017-2018 school year.

As a thank you for your generosity to St. Agnes Oktoberfest’s Silent Auction, you or your business’ name (and information) will be presented to the community via the description attached to your Silent Auction item and social media for the event (website, etc.). Donations may be dropped off or sent to the St. Agnes Parish Office. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

On behalf of St. Agnes School and Parish, as well as the Oktoberfest Festival Committee, thank you for your time, consideration, and support. Sincerely, Kim Brooking St. Agnes Oktoberfest Silent Auction Chair c/o St. Agnes 1680 Dixie Highway Fort Wright, KY 41011 [email protected] 859-578-9263 or Jason Collins: [email protected] 859-816-0732
