ATTENDANCE

90% attendance = ½ a day missed every week

90% over the school year = 4 whole weeks of lessons missed

90% over 2 years = a whole half term missed!

In order to achieve, students MUST ATTEND

The government class any student under 90% attendance as being

persistently absent from school which triggers school intervention and

warning letters that eventually lead to fixed penalty notices being given.

We are unable to authorise any holiday’s and taking your child out of school

on holiday will result in the above process being triggered

We have outlined below some strategies that you might be able to use to

improve your child’s attendance:

1. Find out regularly your child's absence figures using My Child At

School and check this matches with your own record.

2. Talk regularly with your child about school and how they feel about it. Students are more likely to attend if they feel supported and anxieties

listened to. 3. Telephone us as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent,

and when you expect them to return. Putting the school number in your phone can save you time. Make sure you know the school routine for

alerting you to absence.

4. Only grant days at home for genuine illness (you will know!)

5. Avoid taking holidays in school time.

6. Know routines of the school day to avoid issues, e.g. have they got

their PE kit?

7. If you have concerns ring us – we will check attendance and be

discreet.

8. PRAISE AND REWARD GOOD ATTENDANCE: even small

successes, e.g. going in promptly.

STUDY SUPPORT IN PREPARATION FOR GCSE

A timetable will be shared shortly for study support for Year 11 students’

GCSE subjects. This is a free resource, and by invitation. When a student is

invited to a session, students are expected to attend.

Study Support sessions are closely monitored by the KS4 team and in

collaboration with Subject staff to ensure all students make the best progress

possible.

Pastoral Support Team

All our staff are focused on the well-being of our students, and recognise that

GCSEs can be a stressful time. Support is offered through the Form Tutor,

Director of Learning for KS4 and Assistant and the Senior Leadership Team

link. In addition, support is available from our SENDCO James Wyatt,

Inclusion Co-ordinator Laurie Simmonds and Sue Akers, Mental Health Lead

and Safeguarding Officer.

Home Based Learning

What is the purpose of Home Based Learning?

• To learn independently

• To practice skills (e.g. writing, computation)

• To prepare for new learning

• To reinforce skills learnt in class

• To consolidate that learning has taken place

• To challenge students

• To enable students to accelerate their progress and fulfil their

potential

Supporting your child’s Home Based Learning

• Use the parental log in for Show My Homework to monitor what

homework is due.

Page 10: Ridgeway Academy...2019/01/02  · 11 Kings Mr J Chappell Jon.Chappell@ridgeway.herts.sch.uk 11 Edinburgh Mr M Broad Michael.Broad@ridgeway.herts.sch.uk Director of Learning, KS4:

Respect Responsibility Relationships

• Find them a quiet room for homework to be done – away from the

TV and phone!

• Encourage your child to complete their homework the night it is set

• Encourage your child to attend Homework Club in K2 straight after

school where help is always on hand

Show My Homework

• The schools homework is now also set on www.showmyhomework.co.uk,

• This is easily accessible via our school’s website

www.ridgeway.herts.sch.uk – click on the ‘Show My Homework’

banner.

• This will take you to the Ridgeway Academy calendar – you can access homework information by selecting the appropriate teacher,

class, year group etc.

• All information like deadlines etc. are also there and, often, teachers will also add useful resources such as worksheets or PowerPoints or

link to websites that students could use to help them.

You can now use the filters at the top of the page to locate the homework for

your child by either Year group; Subject; Class or Teacher.

Parents can also access Show My Homework using their parental log in; if

you need a copy of the PIN number please ask your child to request it from

their form tutor in the first instance.

REWARDS AND CONSEQUENCES

Ridgeway Academy adopt a rewards and consequences system which is

based on promoting and celebrating positive behaviours whilst challenging

experience.

• We will celebrate success each term through a formal assembly.

• Throughout the year the Head Teacher will deliver awards to recognise

excellence.

• We will continue to develop a Growth Mindset throughout our community

with students being rewarded for displaying the Growth Mindset qualities

of FORCE – Focus, Optimism, Resilience, Creativity and Energy.

• Each year will end with an annual Prize Giving for each year group, with

prizes awarded by form tutors, Directors of Learning and Subject Leaders.
