Information for San Francisco Bay Area Commuters

If you use public transit in the Bay Area, you’re probably familiar with the Clipper card. A Clipper card tracks your loaded passes, discount tickets, ride books and cash value — plus it applies fares, discounts and transfer rules. The Clipper card is accepted on transit systems such as Muni, BART, AC Transit, Caltrain and Golden Gate Transit and Ferry.

How to Load Commuter Program Funds onto Your Clipper CardLoading your program funds onto a Clipper card is easy. Simply chose one of the options below and be sure to link your Clipper card to your WageWorks account.

When is the money available?

Your Clipper card is loaded by the first day of each month for orders placed by the fourth day of the preceding month. For example, if you load your card by May 4, your money will be available June 1.

You need to tag your Clipper card to add the value and spend the money. If you add money to your Clipper card through Clipper Autoload or by phone, allow 3-5 days for the money to become available.

Do I have to pay other fees? Yes. There’s a monthly processing fee of up to $2. No.

* You can also use your WageWorks Commuter Card to add money to your Clipper card by using a Clipper Add Value Machine, a Bart or Muni Machine, visiting a transit agency ticket office or calling Clipper.

WageWorks and Clipper

Why can’t I add money to my Clipper card using my WageWorks Commuter Card? You may be trying to add more than $300 in eCash, which puts your transaction on hold. Your Clipper card may also be blocked or damaged. Give Clipper a call to find out why your card isn’t working.

My WageWorks money wasn’t added onto my Clipper card. What happened? There may be a couple of reasons why your money wasn’t added. Possible reasons include:

• Inactive Clipper card (lost, stolen or defective) — WageWorks credits your account after receiving the refund from Clipper. WageWorks uses the refund to pay for any future or pending orders.

• Attempted load exceeded $300 — WageWorks credits your account after getting the refund from Clipper. This can take several months.

• A debit/credit card is the default funding source for your Clipper account. The default card blocks your WageWorks monthly election from putting money on your Clipper card. To remove the default card, contact Clipper. Once the card is removed, the amount you set aside is processed.

Contact Clipper to find out the reason your money wasn’t added.

Does the Clipper card have balance minimums and maximums?Yes. The maximum balance you can have on your Clipper card is $300. Clipper needs a minimum balance of $1.25 of eCash when loading a Caltrain pass. If you try adding an amount from your WageWorks account that’s greater than the Clipper card limit, the transaction is denied and Clipper returns the entire amount to WageWorks.

You can avoid going over the $300 Clipper card eCash maximum by splitting your WageWorks money between your Clipper card and your WageWorks Commuter Card. When your Clipper card balance is below $300 in eCash, you can transfer money from your WageWorks Commuter Card to your Clipper card by:

• Logging on to the Clipper website.

• Calling Clipper.

• Visiting a Clipper Add Value Machine or transit agency ticket office window.

You can add eCash at any time.

How do I transfer money from my lost or stolen Clipper card to my replacement Clipper card?Call Clipper to make the transfer. If you use Clipper Direct Load, log on to www.wageworks.com to update your pending transaction with the serial number from your new Clipper card.

Clipper Card Tips

How do I tag my Clipper card? Tag your Clipper card at the station, fare gate or entrance of a transit vehicle by placing it flat against the Clipper card reader until you hear a beep. The card reader shows the amount you paid (in eCash) or that a valid pass or transfer has been found.

What happens to my WageWorks transit funds if I don’t tag my Clipper card? If you don’t tag your Clipper card to get your transit funds, your order is saved for six months — you may tag your card at any time during this time — and your card picks up the amount you ordered. Call Clipper if you don’t tag your card during the six-month period and need to get your funds.

Can I have cash and transit passes on my Clipper card?Yes. With Clipper, you only need a single reloadable card. When your card is loaded with both cash value and transit passes, the card reader charges you the lowest fare. The Clipper system checks to see if your card has a valid pass or transfer before taking cash. When you use your Clipper card with a cash value or transit pass, a single or double beep means the right fare was taken or that a valid pass or transfer was found.

How do I know how much money is available on my Clipper card? Each time you pay your fare with cash, the Clipper card reader shows the fare taken and how many dollars you have left. The card also shows the date the pass expires.
