As I do in all the regions I write about, I taste as widely and as comprehensively as I can, if possible visiting bodegas to talk to the people who make the wines and, time permitting, walking in their vineyards. I’m still learning about the region, but I’ve got an increasingly firm grasp on the differences between the four provinces that make up the Denominación de Origen (Soria, Burgos, Segovia and Valladolid) as well as its 102 individual communes and villages. Ribera is a very diverse place, with marked differences in soil type, aspect and altitude. Like all great wine regions, it takes time to explore.

Last year I chose my very first Top 100 for the London tastings (there were 50 in 2017) and I’ve done the same thing again this year. Some of the successful brands also appeared in the selection in 2018, but 45 of them are completely new. The pool of top producers is getting deeper in Ribera del Duero. The Top 100 was selected from 423 wines, all of them tasted sighted, either at wineries, dinners or at the offices of the Consejo Regulador in Roa. All of the winning wines scored 93 points or more. For convenience, I have also listed all of the wines that scored 90 points and above in the A-Z at the back of this report.

I’ve already presented some of these wines to sommeliers, journalists and importers in London and Manchester and two things surprised them: the quality of the wines, especially from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 vintages, and their diversity. Critics of Ribera sometimes say that the wines often taste alike, but I think that’s incorrect. Get to know the difference between a wine from Atauta and one from La Horra, Peñafiel or La Aguilera and you are starting to get under the skin of the region.

Tempranillo is eminently capable of expressing terroir, especially when oak is used judiciously to frame rather than dominate a wine.

Talking of which, Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo and Tinta del País) is obviously the dominant grape in Ribera del Duero with 22,267 out of the region’s 23,205 hectares, but it’s sometimes blended with other varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Malbec, Merlot and the brilliant white grape, Albillo. That adds another level to the diversity I’ve found. And the good news is that next year the Top 100 will feature white Riberas for the first time, as these have recently been given the green light by the local Consejo Regulador.

Ribera del Duero is a young region in some respects, with a DO that was created as recently as 1982. Winemaking dates back to Roman times, of course, but Ribera del Duero is still evolving. Fortunately, it can call on a lot of old vines in the best spots to showcase its terroirs. More than a quarter of its vines were planted before 1982 and 817 hectares before 1920. That’s what gives many of the best wines their intensity and complexity, Vega Sicilia Único, Dominio de Es La Diva and Dominio de Pingus (three of my top scoring wines) being the most obvious examples.

This, then, is my selection of my top wines of the region. Next year I plan to write a more detailed and in-depth report of which the Top 100 will be a part. I hope you enjoy tasting these wines as much as I did. And if you get chance to sample them in situ, all the better. Ribera really does deserve a visit.

Tim Atkin MW

IntroductionI’ve been visiting Ribera del Duero since the late 1980s, when I was fortunate enough to taste at Vega Sicilia, then as now one of Spain’s most celebrated wine estates. But in the last three years I’ve begun to take a keener interest in the region, prompted by an invitation from the local Consejo Regulador to select my favourite wines for a series of master classes in the UK.

Tasting notesReds

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva 2010(14%)Perfection is as rare in wine as it is in most things in life, but this is a stunning Único, reflecting the quality of one of the greatest vintages of the last century. Blended with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, as it was in 2009, it's still a very youthful wine right now, with close-knit tannins, thrilling acidity, layers of spices, fresh earth, tobacco, red and black fruits, some oak sweetness and a wonderfully refreshing, leafy undertone. Simply stunning. 2025-50

Dominio de Es La Diva 2017(13.9%)If La Mata is very much a clay-sourced wine, this is all about expressing limestone: a single, 0.4-hectare parcel wine that blends Tempranillo with 15% Albillo to produce one of Spain's greatest reds. Described by Bertrand Sourdais as "my Amoureuses", it does indeed have some of the perfume and elegance of the great Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru. Chalky, trenchant and refined, it's scented, sappy and very long on the palate. 2023-32

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial NV(14.5%)A wine that takes ten years to make in the words of Gonzalo Iturriaga, this non-vintage cuvée is a blend of 2008, 2009 and 2010, which combines Tempranillo with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. Like the regular Único release, it has the structure, acidity and concentration to last, with sweet spices, notes of dill and tobacco, more evident American oak and some understated freshness, backbone and minerality. 2023-40

Dominio de Pingus 2017(14.5%)Deservedly regarded as one of Spain's greatest reds, this is never a blockbuster Tempranillo, even in a year like 2017 when 30% of the crop was lost to frost. Made with 4.5-hectares of old-vine fruit from the Barroso and San Cristóbal pagos, it has youthful flavours of blood orange, black cherry and raspberry and beautifully understated wood. The tannins are silky and refined, the palate very long indeed. 2022-35

Vega Sicilia Valbuena Reserva 2015(14.5%)This is one of the best Valbuenas I've ever tasted, a still youthful cuvée of Tempranillo with 5% Merlot. Made grapes from Vega's north-facing vineyards in the western part of the Denominación de Origen, it's a refined, layered, subtly wooded red with some spice from partial American oak ageing, notes of fresh tobacco, raspberry and bramble fruit, very fine tannins and a core of acidity that's unusual in 2015. 2022-35

Vivaltus 2017(13.5%)How do you follow up a first release as stunning as the 2016? Simple: make a wine that's every bit as good, albeit from a very different vintage. This multi-zone blend of Tempranillo and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon uses high altitude vineyards in Fuentenebro as its core, which gives it remarkable freshness and lift. The tannins are silky, the oak svelte and aromatic, the fruit sweet and layered, the finish long and engaging. Rapidly confirming itself as one of Spain's best reds. 2022-35

Bodegas Garmón Continental Garmón 2017(14.5%)Very much a blend of villages, Mariano García's remarkable wine uses fruit from four different areas, with altitudes of up to 1,000 metres. Subtle, floral and energetic, with finely judged oak, judiciously worked tannins, savoury, dark berry fruit, plenty of colour and considerable ageing potential. Firmly established as one of Ribera's best cuvées. 2023-30

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2016(14%)The brilliant José-Manuel Pérez Ovejas may have left the family winery, but for the time being we can continue to enjoy the wonderful, ageworthy wines he produced there. Comparatively backward at the moment and still showing quite a bit of French and American wood, this has the stuffing, concentration and acidity to age for a decade or more. Give it time. 2024-35

Bodegas Valdaya Mirum 2017(14.5%)Made with grapes at 915 metres in Baños de Valdearados, Mirum has rapidly established itself as one of the best wines in Ribera since Marta Ramos and Miguel Fisac made their first vintage in 2014. 2017 was a tricky year because of the frost, but this is a triumph, with stylishly integrated 20% new wood, filigree tannins, racy, floral, black fruit and a hint of tangerine. 2021-27

Cillar de Silos Flor de Silos 2017(14%)Pre-phylloxera vines that are more than a century old supply the fruit for this amazing red from a 1.3-hectare parcel in Quintana del Pidio. It's certainly a very youthful wine, but you can already peer into the future and get a sense of what it will become in a decade's time. Easily carrying its 50% new wood, it's layered and concentrated with chalky freshness and balance, fine tannins and floral red berry fruit. Very impressive. 2023-32

Dominio de Atauta La Mala Reserva 2014(15%)Divided into ten "micro-parcels", according to Jaime Suárez, this 1.09-hectare vineyard is the most easterly of Dominio de Atauta's blocks. The most limestone-influenced wine in the bodega's portfolio, it has the effortless concentration of 130-year-old vines with mouth-watering acidity and minerality and some aromatic wild herb top notes. Wonderfully refined and precise. 2021-28

Dominio de Cair Cruz del Pendón 2014(14.5%)Cruz del Pendón is the top wine from Juan Luís Cañas' oldest parcels in La Aguilera. Way less oaky than many of the wines he produces in his native Rioja, this tastes as good as it looks: floral, refined and stylishly wooded in one-year-old barrels, with the freshness and precision of the vintage and flavours of wild strawberry and red cherry underpinned by acidity. 2020-28

Dominio de Es La Mata 2017(14%)"I want precision in this wine," comments Bertrand Sourdais of his brilliant, single vineyard wine. Made from mostly Tempranillo with 2% each of Albillo and Alicante Bouschet, all sourced from a 0-2-hectare parcel and aged in 100% new barrels, it's firm and dense, with a ferrous undertone from red clay soils, considerable structure, fine oak, dark berry fruit, hints of wild herbs and the acidity that's a feature of Soria reds. 2025-35

Dominio de Es Viñas Viejas de Soria 2017(14.5%)Loire Valley winemaker Bertrand Sourdais - he also runs Domaine Pallus in Chinon - produces this impressive wine from 25 old-vine parcels in isolated, high-altitude Soria, using 30% whole bunches and 5% Albillo in the blend. Dense, sappy, yet well balanced, it's still a young wine, but has the precision and complexity to age. The stems add hints of clove and white pepper. 2023-30

Dominio del Aguila Reserva 2016(14%)Jorgé Monzón's spicy, beautifully detailed red includes 5% of the white grape, Albillo, some Garnacha and a significant percentage of whole bunches. Elegant and subtle, it's a graceful Ribera with just a kiss of oak that tastes even better now than it did last year from barrel. For just a "village wine", it is very complex indeed, with remarkable purity and minerality and a long, satisfying finish. 2020-30

Hacienda Monasterio Reserva 2015(15%)A riper year 2015 may have been, but this scented cuvée of Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon shows no sign of the heat, even though it comes from one of Ribera del Duero's warmer sites. Cassis, red cherry and wild thyme flavours combine appealingly on the palate, with scented vanilla oak and some chalky freshness. Wears its 15% alcohol lightly. 2021-27

Hermanos Sastre Pesus Selección de Pedro y Jesús 2015(14.5%)The top wine from Hermanos Sastre is partly a tribute to Jesús' late brother, Pedro, and has established itself as one of Ribera del Duero’s iconic wines since its first vintage in 1999. Only made in the best years, it sees a whopping 200% new wood over the space of 18 months and combines Tempranillo with 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2015 is plush, scented and typically powerful, yet for all its exuberance, power and oaky concentration, it's a wine that has freshness and balance. Needs time. 2025-35

Legaris Alcubilla de Avellaneda 2016(14.5%)The pick of a new series of "village wines" from this rapidly improving bodega owned by Cava giant, Codorniu, this comes from a vineyard at 926 metres in Soria, Ribera's easternmost zone. You barely notice the new French oak here, such is the intensity and fragrance of the wine, showing notes of sage, white pepper and clove and wonderful poise and sweetness. 2020-28

Valdemonjas Abrí Las Alas 2015(15%)Abrí Las Alas in unusual at Valdemonjas, as it comes from a 0.6-hectare block of 80-year-old vines in La Horra, rather than the bodega's home vineyard in Quintinalla de Arriba. Bold, rich and entirely aged in new wood, with impressive concentration that's typical of the village's red clay soils, layered plum and blueberry fruit, sturdy tannins and the power and concentration of a Mediterranean vintage. 2022-30

Viñedos Alonso del Yerro María de Alonso del Yerro 2015(14.5%)Named after the bodega's owner, María de Alonso del Yerro hails from two separate plots in Roa - El Circo, which faces west on chalky-clay soils, and Violeta on chalky gravel with a northern aspect - both planted in 1988. Showing the freshness and elegance of the best 2016s, it has granular tannins, racy acidity, impressive concentration and well-integrated 30% new wood. Refined and mineral-edged. 2022-32

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Tinto Figuero Viñas Viejas 2016(14.5%)The Figuero family have deep personal roots in La Horra and source all of their grapes, both owned and purchased, from vineyards that are over 60 years' old. This is comparatively subtle and refined by the standards of some La Horra wines with floral, ginger spice aromas, fine-grained tannins and understated concentration. Beautifully judged. 2021-28

Aalto PS 2017(14%)First produced in 2000, with no wine made in 2002 and 2007, PS is Aalto's top wine. Sourced from La Horra and La Aguilera in 2017, it does malolactic in barrel before ageing in 100% new French oak. The result is bolder, riper and more concentrated than the regular bottling with layers of red fruits, notes of liquorice and toast, structured tannins and racy acidity. Built to last and will certainly do so. 2022-32

Alberto y Benito Briego Gran Reserva 2011(15%)Created by the Benito Hernando brothers, this bodega is based on the south side of the River Duero in the high altitude zone of Fompedraza and sources most of its grapes from there. This is something of a traditional style, spending 24 months in French and American oak and combines balsamic and sweet spice aromas with savoury tannins and refreshing acidity. 2019-25

Alión 2016(14.5%)Alión is a pan-Ribera cuvée, made by the team at Vega Sicilia but with its own vineyard sources in Pesquera, Moradillo, Roa, La Aguillera and Quintinalla de Arriba. Typical of the best 2016s, this has texture and finesse, with scented vanilla top notes from wood ageing, floral plum and red cherry fruit, filigree tannins and a poised, refreshing finish. Drinkable young, but will get even better in bottle. 2020-30

Ausàs Interpretación 2017(14.5%)Ausàs is the personal project of Catalan Xavier Ausàs, who was the long-term winemaker at Vega Sicilia. Now in its second vintage, it combines grapes from Pesquera, Roa, Nava, Moradillo and Gumiel de Mercado and is very much a regional style, albeit one with the emphasis on chalky freshness. Deftly wooded, with plenty of colour, floral intensity and layers of red and dark berry fruit. An impressive follow up to the maiden release. 2022-29

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Reserva Especial 2014(14.5%)Based in Quintinalla de Onésimo, this spa, hotel and winery complex is one of the most westerly addresses in the Denominación de Origen. The Reserva Especial comes from one-hundred-year-old vines, but is still a comparatively forward, semi-traditional style, with sweet tobacco and aromatic spice notes, subtle wood and 5% Albillo adding some extra zip. Wonderfully drinkable. 2019-24

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Pérez Pascuas Gran Reserva 2014(14%)The Pérez Pascuas' top wine come from a single parcel of 87-year-old vines in Pedrosa de Duero called Valtarreña and is a selection of the best barrels. It's a taut, concentrated, intensely fruity red with lots of tannins, oak and acidity and an intensely chalky finish. Tightly wound like a spring, this needs another five years in bottle and preferably more. 2024-35

Bodegas Marta Maté 2014(14%)One of the discoveries of my Ribera trip this year, Cesár Maté and Marta Castrillo's refined, organically grown Tempranillo is sourced from the higher parts of Burgos in Tubilla del Lago and Gumiel de Mercado. It's a refreshing, elegant, beautifully judged style that looks great too. Balanced and refreshing, with understated French oak, sculpted tannins and the freshness of vineyards over 900 metres. 2020-28

Dominio del Aguila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2013(15%)Peñas Aladas is a very cold site at 870 metres, with some vines dating back to pre-phylloxera times. The cooler, wetter vintage doesn't seem to have any effect on the quality of Jorge Monzón's fresh, chalky, beautifully detailed wine, which shows aromas of lavender and pine, sappy, mouth-watering acidity and granular tannins. One of the very best 2013s. 2020-26

Hacienda Monasterio 2017(14.5%)Winemaker Carlos de la Fuente uses 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec on this celebrated estate blend, but they are not overly assertive on the nose or palate. Yields were low in 2017 because of the frosts, yet early picking preserved good acidity in this comparatively warm, south-facing site in Pesquera de Duero. Bramble, wild herb and red fruit flavours are framed by 25% oak and finish with a leafy undertone. 2021-30

Legaris Moradillo de Roa 2016(15%)Now into its second vintage, Legaris' collection of village wines has taken the bodega to a new level. The vines are comparatively young in this small, two-hectare vineyard at 973 metres in Moradillo de Roa, but there's plenty of concentration on offer, showing rich, savoury dark berry fruit, lots of spice and cinnamon oak and a tannic backbone. Exciting stuff. 2021-30

Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón 2015(14.5%)El Anejón is only made in the best vintages, of which the Mediterranean style 2015 was certainly one. Marrying Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot in 2015, this comes from limestone soils at 850 metres in Peñafiel. Always a very perfumed style, it's taught and refreshing with impressive concentration, fine tannins and well-judged new French oak. 2021-30

Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal Reserva 2015(14.5%)El Nogal is actually a parcel within a parcel, being made with fruit from El Picón, the winery's other vineyard designated wine. It's an unashamedly modern style, with malolactic in barrel and plenty of structure, colour and oak influence. Big, bold and reflecting the power of the vintage, it's a wine that needs a few more years in barrel to approach its best. 2022-30

Aalto 2017(14%)"A blend of all of Ribera" is how winemaker Antonio Moral describes this cuvée from nine different villages, combining Aalto's own vineyards and purchased grapes. Subtle, floral and intense, it’s a seamless if still youthful red with 50% new French and American wood, notes of dried herbs and vanilla, bramble and raspberry fruit and polished tannins. 2022-30

Alberto y Benito Briego Adalid Reserva 2015(14%)The Benito Hernández brothers are based in Fompedraza on the southern side of the River Duero and source this wine from their La Nava vineyard. It's very much a fresher, more aromatic style, especially for a 2015, with notes of dill and wild herbs, filigree tannins and a core of sweet red fruit. 2019-25

Alejandro Fernández Tinto Pesquera Reserva 2015(14.5%)After some ups and downs in quality in recent years, it's a pleasure to see Pesquera back on form, given its role in the history of Ribera del Duero. This is clean, modern and well balanced, showing subtle coconut and vanilla-scented American oak, fine-tannins, succulent red berry fruit and the concentration and acidity to age further in bottle. 2020-28

Avelino Vegas Áureo 2016(14.5%)Áureo comes from younger vineyards than Avelino Vegas' 100 Aniversario bottling, but is equally ambitious in style. Aged entirely in new barrels, it's a glossy, scented, unashamedly modern Ribera, with violet and coffee bean aromas, fine-grained tannins, layers of black cherry and plum fruit and racy, refreshing acidity. 2021-28

Bodegas Félix Callejo Félix Callejo 2016(14.5%)With its instantly recognisable photographic label, this is always among the best red wines in Ribera del Duero. Made from a single site in Sotillo de la Ribera, it’s slightly less concentrated and forbidding than the 2015, reflecting the cooler 2016 vintage. Inky black fruit, fine tannins and a stylish patina of toasty oak are underpinned by acidity and considerable vivacity. 2022-31

Bodegas Félix Callejo Majuelos de Callejo 2016(14.5%)Majuelos hails from bush vines at 900 metres in the Callejos' home village of Sotillo de la Ribera. Typical of wines from what were once marginal vineyards, this has racy minerality and considerable underlying elegance. Floral and well balanced, it carries its 100% new oak lightly, showing a combination of texture, chalky freshness and plum and blueberry fruit. 2022-30

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2014(14%)Only made in the best, mostly Atlantic vintages, such as 2008 and 2010, the Pedrosa Gran Reserva comes from 65-year-old vines and is aged in a combination of American and French oak. Youthful, coiled and made for the long haul, this has wonderfully focused layers of plum and black cherry fruit, sweet vanilla spices and top notes of lavender and rosemary. 2021-35

Bodegas Monteabellon Finca La Blanquera 2015(14%)Finca La Blanquera hails from this Nava de Roa-based winery's highest vineyard, containing a high percentage of limestone. It's a very pure, textbook modern Ribera with subtle oak handling, crunchy black cherry and bramble fruit, graceful tannins and an elegant, balanced finish. 2020-28

Bodegas Valduero 6 Años Premium 2011(14%)Seis Años spends three years in wood and a further three in bottle before release, reflecting the García Valdueros' desire to produce wines that age. This sees no new oak, allowing the fine, scented, tobacco pouch and balsamic flavours to express themselves, embellished by the acidity and freshness of vines at 900 metres. 2019-24

Bodegas Valduero Unacepa Premium 2009(15%)Unacepa, always written as a single word at Valduero, comes from high altitude vineyards in Villanueva de Gumiel and combines fruit from three soil types. There's a noticeable volatile lift to this wine that adds a layer of complexity to a red that's savoury, sweet and appealingly earthy, with game and kitchen spice notes and good acidity for a 2009. 2019-23

Bodegas Valtravieso Tinta Fina 2016(14.5%)Valtraiveso's vineyards are located in Piñel de Arriba, which is one of the province of Valladolid's highest areas at 920 metres. The resulting Reserva is a classic "paramo" (moorland) Tempranillo with a fine and engaging combination of freshness, perfume, clove spice and balsamic undertones. The oak is very well integrated, with lovely precision on the palate, which is a hallmark of Argentinian consultant Leo Borsi's style. 2021-28

Bodegas Vizcarra Inés 2015(14%)Juan Carlos Vizcarra used 10% Merlot in this blend with Tempranillo, all of it sourced from a single parcel planted on clay and limestone soils in the 1950s. Named after his second daughter, it makes a nice contrast to Celia, with red and black fruits, a leafy undertone and a fresh, focused, well balanced finish. The oak is stylishly integrated. 2021-28

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca de Valdepalacios 2011(13.5%)Valdepalacios is a one-hectare parcel of 78-year-old bush vines that faces south-east in the Burgos village of Anguix. Abundantly scented and floral, this is a refined wine that combines fruit concentration with freshness, subtle new French oak with textured tannins and dark berry fruit with notes of thyme and rosemary. Maturing gracefully. 2020-26

Bodegas Yllera Dominus 2016(13.5%)Unlike stable mate Jesús Yllera, Dominus is made entirely with Tempranillo from the contrasting villages of La Aguilera and Fuentenebro. Showing way less new wood than the 2015, it's couched in a classical style that shows the influence of consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet, with detailed tannins, fine acidity, subtle red berry fruit and a fresh, balanced finish. 2022-30

Conde de San Cristóbal 880m 2017(15%)Reflecting what it says on the label, Conde de San Cristóbal's top wine comes from a "paramo" (moorland) vineyard located above the winery at 880 metres. Despite losing 60% of the crop in 2017, this retains freshness and balance, framed by 25% new wood and showing flavours of plum and black cherry that segue into a zesty, fine-grained finish. The consultancy of Xavier Àusas is working wonders here. 2022-30

Díaz Bayo Reserva 2014(14.5%)A welcome discovery for me this year, Díaz Bayo is located at 900 metres in comparatively remote Fuentelcésped. Showing the freshness and herbal notes of a more marginal site, this handles its 60% new wood with ease, showing racy blackberry and raspberry flavours, engaging purity and focus and the understated concentration of 50- to 70-year-old bush vines. 2020-29

Dominio Basconcillos Viña Magna Reserva 2015(14.5%)Viña Magna comes from this family-owned bodega's high-altitude estate in Gumiel de Izán and is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It's a bold, structured, lavishly oaked wine that's made in comparatively small quantities and takes time to soften in bottle. Rich and aromatic with good underlying freshness. 2022-30

Dominio de Atauta Llanos del Almendro Reserva 2014(14%)One of five single parcel wines from this first rank Soria winery, Llanos del Almendro's 1.39-hectares are made up of 19 different parcels on sand and limestone soils. The alcohol is a little pronounced here, but this is a wine with plenty of layers and stuffing, showing flavours of aromatic spices, sweet red and black fruits, textured tannins and a long, tapering finish. 2021-28

Dominio de Atauta San Juan Reserva 2014(14.5%)San Juan is located on very poor, south-facing soils at 950 metres, with its 0.45 hectares divided into seven parcels surrounded by wild herbs and holm oaks. Combining clay, sand and limestone soils, it's the most scented and Mediterranean of the bodega's crus. Spicy, firm and sappy with lots of texture, a balsamic undertone and considerable tannic backbone. 2022-29

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2017(14%)Pingus' second wine is sourced from 23 parcels covering 25.5 hectares in La Horra, with most of the grapes sourced from the bodega's own vineyards. Floral, subtle and refined, even at 15% alcohol, Flor has the red fruit flavours, silky, caressing tannins and beautifully judged oak usage that are typical of Peter Sisseck's style. If you can't afford the Gran Vino, this gives you some idea of what the fuss is about. 2022-29

Hermanos Sastre Paso de Santa Cruz 2016(14.5%)Paso de Santa Cruz comes from one half of a 12-hectare vineyard on the classic Roland Garros-like reds soils of La Horra. Showing the concentration of 76-year-old vines, plenty of power and colour and 100% new French wood, it's smooth, rich and ripe with vanilla spice and blackberry flavours, supporting acidity and a chalky finish. Bold yet very well balanced. 2021-32

Lagar de Proventus TR3SMANO 2016(14.5%)Lagar de Proventus is an impressive three-way collaboration that includes Fernando Remírez de Ganuza from Rioja and the winemaker Pedro Aibar, using fruit from vineyards on both sides of the river to produce a very stylish pan-Ribera blend. Floral, refined and deftly wooded, with notes of vanilla and nutmeg spice, lively acidity and sweet red berry fruit. 2020-26

Montebajo Parcela Cara Norte 2016(15%)New to me this year and something of a bargain, this is an impressive pure Tempranillo from an organically-farmed north-facing site in the Finca Monte Alto at close to 900 metres. Cara Norte is scented, pure and stylishly wooded, with 30% new wood, plenty of vibrant acidity and crunchy red berry and black cherry fruit. A family winery to keep an eye on. 2020-26

Uvaguilera Palomero 2010(14.5%)Wines from La Horra can be very big and concentrated, but this varietal Tempranillo from the La Nava vineyard is subtle, refined and aromatic, showing the benefits of nine years in barrel and bottle. Balsamic and sweet, it has oregano and sweet fruit flavours, a Mediterranean undertone and the polish and balance of an excellent vintage.

Valdemonjas Los Tres Dones 2017(15%)Los Tres Dones comes from the three best parcels at Valdemonjas - Antiteatro, Butaca and Galeria - and has more colour intensity and structure than the bodega's other wines. Made with the help of Italian consultant Luca D'Attoma, it sees 50% new wood and has a winning combination of scented oak, sinewy tannins, bright fruit and racy freshness. Another delightful wine from an up-and-coming producer. 2021-27

Valderiz Valderiz 2016(14%)Five different parcels in Roa combined to produce this impressive cuvée of Tempranillo with 5% Albillo. Built to last, as the top Valderiz wines tend to be, this is firm, dark and well structured with a core of firm tannins, scented French and 10% American wood and layers of blackberry and bramble fruit. Rich, intense and well worth cellaring. 2022-30

Viñedos Alonso del Yerro 2016(14.5%)Winemaker Lionel Gourgue has brought a touch of French polish to this pure Tempranillo from 1988 plantings in Roa. Like all the best 2016s, it reflects the freshness of a so-called Atlantic year but with none of the dilution of the heavier cropped examples. Violet and wild herbs aromas segue into a palate that is intense and well structured with racy acidity. Long, scented and very elegant, it's a wine that will improve further with age. 2021-32

Viñedos y Bodegas Áster Finca El Otero 2016(13%)Áster is owned by La Rioja Alta, but is very different in style from the wines that the bodega produces in Haro. This comes from a single parcel of 80-year-old vines in Anguix and sees 100% new French wood. Stylishly oaked, it has the freshness, poise and balance of the 2016 vintage, with plenty of structure and focus, red berry and bramble fruit and alluring perfume. 2022-30

Vivaltus Fleur de Vivaltus 2017(14%)In the best traditions of many Bordeaux châteaux, Vivaltus makes two reds under its label, using fruit from La Aguilera, Fuentenebro, La Horra and Moradillo. Flor has 3% Cabernet Sauvignon in 2017 and is like a scaled down version of the Gran Vino, with plum, red cherry and green herb flavours, graceful tannins and deftly integrated oak. 2022-29

Alberto y Benito Briego Fiel 2015(14.5%)Like all of the reds from the impressive Fompedraza winery, this is all about freshness and balance rather than deep colour, power and extraction. It's an appealingly beguiling wine, showing some subtle reduction, fine-boned tannins and a bright, tapering, savoury finish. 2020-25

Avelino Vegas 100 Aniversario 2015(14%)La Aguilera is one of the best villages in Burgos and this pure Tempranillo from an 80-year-old site doesn't disappoint. Floral, aromatic and appealingly oaked with a mixture of French wood and concrete ageing, it's concentrated yet refreshing with good underlying structure, some vanilla spice and juicy blackberry fruit. 2020-28

Bodega Dehesa de los Canónigos Gran Reserva Luis Sanz Busto 2010(14%)The top red from this historic property in Pesquera de Duero is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Albillo, aged for 40 months in a combination of French and 30% American wood. Seamlessly moving into secondary aromas and flavours, it's smooth and concentrated with some wild herb and balsamic notes and the freshness that's a feature of Belén Sanz's wines. 2020-25

Bodega Sarmentero Vendimia Seleccionada 2017(14%)Amparo Repiso Vallejo's wine comes from the bodega's own vineyards - Prado de Oyales and Peñuelas - in Quintanilla de Arriba at the western end of the region. Showing the slight greenness that you find in some 2017s, this is a spicy, peppery, still youthful red with subtly handled oak and plum, black cherry and liquorice flavours. 2021-28

Bodegas Antídoto La Hormiga de Antídoto 2017(14%)Three old vine parcels - Matanza, Villalvaro and Quintanilla de Tres Barrios - all located at 950 metres in the wilds of Soria, supply the fruit for this dense, compact, ageworthy Tempranillo from red soils over limestone. The acidity is typical of this higher zone, complemented by lots of sweet dark berry fruit, sinewy tannins and deftly integrated 50% new wood. 2022-30

Bodegas Bohórquez Reserva 2009(14.5%)Javier Bohórquez makes his ageworthy cuvée with Tempranillo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot. Surprisingly, given the heat of the 2009 vintage, this is slightly fresher than the equally impressive 2010, reviewed below. Mature, savoury and leafy with classic Ribera acidity and a winning combination of French and American oak. 2019-25

Bodegas Bohórquez Reserva 2010(14%)Most of the wines I sampled for this report were young, so it was a pleasure to taste something with bottle age, especially from a vintage as good as 2010. Blending Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot from the high altitude area of Valdestremoso, close to Pesquera de Duero, this is savoury, sweet and aromatic, with tobacco and forest floor notes and a persistent balsamic finish. 2019-23

Bodegas Bohórquez Cardela Crianza 2016(14.5%)Remarkable value from small family-owned winery in Pesquera de Duero, this combines Tempranillo with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It's a bright, modern, sensitively oaked style with racy acidity, fine tannins, violet top notes and a refreshing herbal twist. 2019-24

Bodegas Ismael Arroyo Valsotillo Finca Buenavista 2016(13.5%)Ismael Arroyo was one of the founders of the Denominación de Orígen and the family bodega that still bears his name continues to make impressive wines. This is a modern-meets-traditional style from south-facing vineyards in Sotillo de Ribera, with well-handled French and American oak, spicy red berry fruit and graceful tannins. 2020-25

Bodegas Monteabellon Finca Matambres 2015(14%)Produced under the direction of Isaac Fernández, the nephew of the legendary Mariano García of Vega Sicilia fame, this comes from a vineyard close to Nava de Roa and is refined, fruity and very polished for a 2015, with no sign of the heat and power of the vintage. Focused and aromatic, it's all about perfume and red berry fruit and subtle oak. 2020-25

Bodegas Nabal Crianza 2015(13.5%)Nabal is a comparatively new bodega in high altitude Gumiel de Izán, having produced its first wines in 2014, which buys grapes as well as using fruit from its own six hectares. Described by winemaker Oscar Navarro as "an Old World style", this Crianza is made with old-vine Tempranillo and sees a combination of French and 30% American wood. Refreshing and detailed, with red fruits and tangy acidity, it tastes more like a 2014 than a 2015. 2021-28

Bodegas Nabal Reserva 2015(14.5%)The Navarros' Reserva bottling is picked a little later for "structure", according to Oscar Navarro, and comes from 60- to 100-year-old vineyards in Gumiel de Izán which include 5% of the white grape, Albillo. Aged in new French oak for 24 months, it's a nice combination between the weight and texture of the vintage and the freshness of a high zone, with filigree tannins and well-handled oak. 2022-30

Bodegas Pascual Buró Vendimia Seleccionada 2016(14.5%)Buró is made with fruit from 60-year-old vines in Fuentelcésped on the southern side of the Duero River and is very much a limestone-influenced, high-altitude style. Even fresher and more refined than the impressive 2015, this is sappy, bright and spicy with understated oak, fine tannins and crunchy red berry fruit. Delightful stuff. 2021-28

Bodegas Protos Protos '27 2016(14.5%)It's gratifying to see one of Ribera's oldest and largest producers making a wine as good as this. Carrying its 16 months in new French oak lightly, it's a bright, juicy, youthful wine with plum and red berry fruit, spicy vanilla top notes and refreshing acidity. The cellars in Peñafiel are worth a visit too. 2021-28

Bodegas Valdaya Valdaya 2017(13.5%)This is the cheaper of the two wines from well-travelled oenologists, Marta Ramos and Miguel Fisac, sourced from lighter, sandier soils in Baños de Valdearados, but it has some of the quality of their top wine, Mirum. Aged in 20% new wood, it's ripe, supple and deeply coloured, with pastille, liquorice and blackberry fruit and wonderful vibrancy and zip. 2020-25

Bodegas Valduero Reserva 2012(14.5%)This successful, very well run family winery in Gumiel de Mercado is in a cool spot that enjoys considerable diurnal variation. It produces wines that age well in bottle, just like this balsamic, savoury, red berry fruity Tempranillo which has assertive, scented oak, good underlying structure and the freshness and vivacity for further bottle development. 2019-26

Bodegas Virtus Vega del Yuso 2014(14.5%)Three different areas - Peñafiel, Sotillo de la Ribera and Hontoria de Valdearados - supply the grapes for this elegant, finely judged wine that is modern in style, but not excessively so. You don’t notice the alcohol here, such is the freshness on offer, with 50% new wood framing the finish the perfection. A name to keep an eye on. 2020-26

Bodegas Viyuela Xth Aniversario 2013(14.5%)The talented Marta Ramos of Bodegas Valdaya is the consultant here, using fruit from a 0.9-hectare parcel close to the winery in Boada de Roa. Given how tricky the vintage was, this is a highly commendable 2013 that has aged beautifully. Spicy, savoury and sweet, it's not a blockbuster wine but it's a delight to drink right now. 2019-23

Bodegas Vizcarra Celia 2015(14%)Celia is named after Juan Carlos Vizcarra's daughter, who is currently studying oenology and set to follow in her father's footsteps. Made from a single northeast-facing plot planted in 1940, this wine includes 5% Garnacha and is unusually fresh and perky for a 2015. Bramble, red berry and vanilla spicy oak flavours are supported by wonderful zip and acidity. 2021-28

Bodegas Vizcarra Torralvo Gran Reserva 2011(14%)Juan Carlos Vizcarra makes this wine from a single parcel planted in 1950 on sand and clay soils. Aged in 100% new wood, 90% of which is French, it's a rich, aromatic style from Mambrilla de Castrejón with layers of blackberry and blueberry fruit, crunchy acidity and notes of mocha and vanilla spice. Needs more time in bottle to integrate its wood, even after eight years. 2021-28

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca La Nava 2015(13.5%)Gallego Zapatero's 0.8-hectare La Nava plot in Anguix was planted as recently as 1996 and faces north. The resulting wine is a splendid follow up to the 2014, with slightly firmer, denser tannins and fruit weight, but the same freshness, focus and elegance. The oak is sensitively handled. 2021-28

Bodegas Yllera Jesús Yllera 2016(13.5%)Produced after the arrival of Frenchman Jean-Claude Berrouet as consultant in 2016 and showing less power and alcohol than previous vintages, this is a fine, nuanced blend of Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. Made with fruit from La Aguilera and Fuentenebro, it has a green leafy undertone and polished tannins. 2021-28

Cillar de Silos Torresilo 2017(14.5%)The Aragón family certainly make Riberas at the more modern end of the spectrum, using fruit from 50 old-vine parcels in Quintana del Pidio and La Aguilera to produce this glossy, textured, sweetly oaked Tempranillo, which undergoes malolactic in barrel. Supple, scented and smooth with notes of mocha and vanilla spice, plum and blueberry and racy, concluding acidity. 2022-30

Dominio de Atauta Reserva 2016(15%)Volumes of the top, single-parcel wines are tiny at Dominio de Atauta, so this larger blend offers drinkers the chance to sample the bodega's wines at an eminently affordable price. With an average vine age of 130 years' old, most of which are planted on limestone, this is racy and refined, with rose petal top notes, subtle 15% new wood, notes of thyme and rosemary and a refreshing, chalky persistence. 2021-29

Dominio de Atauta La Roza Reserva 2014(14.5%)"Our jewel in the crown" is how winemaker Jaime Suárez describes this 0.24-hectare parcel of 165-year-old vines, which are the oldest in the Atauta Valley on a mixture of sand, clay and chalk soils. Thyme and rosemary aromas segue into a silky, sappy, savoury palate with chiselled minerality, layered tannins and sweet red cherry and bramble fruit. 2020-28

Dominio de Atauta Valdegatiles Reserva 2014(14.5%)Valdegatiles is a 1.09-hectare block on clay soils at the bottom of the Atauta Valley, which still sits at an elevation of 930 metres. The vines here are "young" for the region and were planted at the turn of the 20th century. Floral red fruits, some aromatic spices, subtle 10% new wood and plenty of underlying texture combine winningly on the palate. 2022-30

Dominio del Pidio 2017(15%)"There was very little of it, but what we had was very good," says Oscar Aragón of the 2017 vintage, having lost 90% of his grapes to the April frost. Aged in 20% new wood to frame the fruit concentration, this is a stylish, dense, concentrated cuvée of Tempranillo with co-planted Albillo, showing considerable underlying finesse, savoury blackberry fruit and the structure to age. 2022-30

Goyo García Viadero Finca Viñas de Arcilla Reserva 2015(14.5%)Goyo García Viadero uses very little if any sulphur on any of his reds, winning the praise of the natural wine crowd. This is the pick of his current releases, sourced from vines at 800 metres in Anguix. Wild, funky and savoury, with effortless old- vine concentration, it has plenty of texture and fruit, some herbal top notes and a chalky finish. 2019-23

Hermanos Sastre Regina Vides 2016(14%)Three blocks in La Horra - one planted in 1907, the other two in the 1940s - supply the fruit for this typically concentrated Tempranillo from Jesús Sastre's celebrated family winery. There are only 1,000 bottles of this sweet, powerful, palate-coating red, which is plushly oaked in new French wood, has top notes of violet, lovely fruit sweetness and the structure to age. Hedonistic stuff, but with impressive underlying balance. 2022-32

La Loba 2016(14%)Ana Carazo is an exciting young talent based in Matanza de Soria, who has gone back to her family roots to make some very promising wines. Made entirely from Tempranillo, sourced from 120 parcels of very old vines, this is floral, sappy and almost Pinot Noir-like in its freshness, focus and elegance. The oak is barely noticeable here. 2020-26

M. Chapoutier España Dominio del Soto Crianza 2016(14%)This was the first vintage made by Michel Chapoutier's team at Dominio del Soto in high-altitude Sotillo. Farmed organically and overseen by Ernesto Peña Peña, this is a subtle, understated, very lightly wooded style with subtle wild herb, fennel and spicy flavours, fine tannins and a fresh, lively, chalky finish. A sure sign of great things to come. 2021-28

Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres 2015(14%)Planted in 1994, Cuesta de las Liebres has more clay in the soil than its stable mate El Anejón. It's a denser, plusher, broader wine with firm, layered tannins, well-handled 100% new oak, lip smacking blackberry and dark cherry fruit, a thread of minerality and plenty of extract and concentration. The underlying balance is good, but this needs time to integrate. 2022-30

Pago de los Capellanes Reserva 2015(14.5%)The estate Reserva is produced from Pago de los Capellanes' oldest plots (many of which are over 80 years' old) and is typically dense, focused and serious, with lots of perfumed French oak, layers of brooding tannins, counterbalancing acidity and bold blackberry and blueberry fruit. Classic modern Ribera. 2021-28

Rento Carlos Moro Finca Picón de Zurita 2016(14%)Finca Picón de Zurita is Carlos Moro's only bush-vine vineyard and it's no coincidence that this currently produces his best Ribera red. Grown on sandy soils, the vines were planted in the 1920s and have produced a wine with violet and rose petal scents, refined 100% new wood and refreshing red cherry and raspberry fruit. An auspicious début from one of the Denominación de Orígen's biggest landowners. 2022-28

Valdemonjas El Patio 2018(14.5%)Gloriously atypical for a wine of this quality level in Ribera del Duero, El Patio is only released in magnums and is made without added sulphur, seeing no oak at all, just ageing in concrete eggs. Early picked from vineyards in the lowest part of this boutique estate in Quintanilla de Arriba, the 2018 is bursting with fresh, juicy, rose petal and strawberry fruit and caressing tannins. A Tempranillo meets Pinot Noir style. 2019-22

Valdemonjas Entre Palabras 2017(14.5%)Alejandro Moyano uses six of the nine different terroirs in his mostly north-facing estate in Quintanilla de Arriba to produce this distinguished varietal Tempranillo. As ever with the Valdemonjas wines, there's more than a hint of Pinot Noir about the result, with flavours of summer fruit, very understated wood, violet perfume and filigree tannins. A unique style from a property that should be much better known. 2020-25

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Milagros de Figuero 2015(14%)Three 60-year-old vineyards in La Horra supply the fruit for this 100% new French oak-aged Tempranillo, all of them bush vines. With 50% malolactic in wood, it's very much a violet-scented modern style, but none the worse for that. Concentrated it most certainly is, as you'd expect from a 2015, but the wine has freshness, poise and refined tannins to balance its core of dense blackberry and bramble fruit. Stylish stuff. 2021-30

Bodegas Antídoto Le Rosé de Antídoto 2017(14.5%)The only rosé to feature among my top wines this year, Bertrand Sourdais' cuvée of equal parts Tempranillo and Albillo hails from a single parcel at 1,000 metres in San Esteban de Gormaz. Very pale in colour, with notes of wild flowers and watermelon, racy acidity and the faintest whisper of oak sweetness. Sappy, refreshing and very long. 2019-23
