Engaging in Argument from Evidence is Focus of Dec. 4 Web Seminar Exploring the

Practices in the Framework for K12 Science Education

Engaging in argument from evidence is the topic of the next web seminar in a series of eight on the scientific and

engineering practices described inA Framework for K12 Science Education. It will be held on Tuesday, December 4,

    from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Join Joe Krajcik, a design team lead for both the Framework and NGSS, and learn more about

Why reasoning and argument based on evidence are essential to identifying the best explanation for a

    natural phenomenon or the best solution to a design problem;

How scientists and engineers use argumentation to listen to, compare, and evaluate competing ideas and

    methods based on merits; and

The use of argumentation when investigating a phenomenon, testing a design solution, resolving questions

about measurements, building data models, and using evidence to identify strengths and weaknesses of

    claims.

The Framework, published by the National Research Council (NRC), describes the major practices, crosscutting

concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school and is being

used to guide the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Artbotic Lecture by Dr. Holly Yanco December 5

As part of Computer Science Education Week, Rhode Island College is sponsoring a talk by Dr. Holly Yanco on

Artbotics on Wednesday, December 5th, 2012 at 4:30pm in Faculty Center South Dining

Dr. Holly Yanco , Professor in the Computer Science Department at UMass Lowell, founded the Robotics Lab

and co-developed the Artbotics program, which combines art and computer science in a curriculum for high

school and college students . She was the PI of the NSF-funded (DUE-0231363) development ofPyro, a Python-

based robotics curriculum, which was selected as the Premier Courseware of 2005 by NEEDS. She has received

teaching awards from UMass Lowell and MIT.

MIT BLOSSOMS Back-to-School Lesson Contest Apply by December 3 (HS)http://blossoms.mit.edu/home

High School level science, mathematics, and engineering teachers are invited to submit their lesson designs for a new

MIT BLOSSOMS lesson in Mathematics, Science or Engineering. We are looking for a lesson that you have taught

successfully and that you think would work well with the MIT BLOSSOMS Teaching Duet pedagogy. We are also

looking for lessons that cover essential high school curriculum topics, but approach those topics in a fresh, dynamic

way. Also, a winning math lesson will be supportive of the new Common Core standards. Here are some important

things to remember about a BLOSSOMS lesson:

A BLOSSOMS lesson is not a lecture.

A BLOSSOMS lesson presents a topic from an unusual, interesting angle.

The video segments should be 3 minutes or less, and never more than 4.

The first segment needs to be no longer than 2 minutes and must excite the interest of both teachers and

    students.

With video technology, segments can be filmed in interesting locations. Stay away from the classroom asmuch as possible!

A lesson must provide challenging, thought-provoking classroom activities for the video breaks.

    Important Contest Deadlines:

Monday, December 3, 2012 Teachers must submit the completed MIT BLOSSOMS Concept Template for

    their lessons, availablehere.

Monday, January 7, 2013 - Finalists will be announced and asked to complete the MIT BLOSSOMS
