In the Name of God, Closer to me than all my relatives Creator of relationships, and the One Who nurtures them best.

Do we really need another mosque?Believe me, we asked ourselves the same question. If a mosque means walls, carpets, and domes, and a building that’s empty most of the week - well, we sure don’t need another structure.

We need spiritFrom the start, our motto has been: the saajid before the masjid. That is: the spirit before the structure.

We believe the most important need of our time is to build the healthy Muslim mindset and cultivate the person who will be a true member of a house of prayer. For over ten years, we have been leading a community with exactly this focus, here in Ottawa and with students and supporters all over the world.

Three years ago, we opened the Rhoda Institute and the Lotus Community Corner, two adjacent spaces meant to meet two important needs: the need for God, and the need for community.

Coming home to GodThrough religious classes, daily prayers, visits of scholars from around the world, and a robust children’s program at the Rhoda Institute and Masjid and the Lotus Community Corner, something unique and amazing has been taking place in the nation’s capital: people have been coming back to God.

Walk into the Rhoda during any event and you will find women, men, teens, children, and elders praying together, learning together, and supporting one another through the ups and downs of life. You will find community here.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDERS SHAYKH HAMDI BEN AISSA & ANSE SHEHNAZ KARIM

This community is not limited to our geographic location. With our regular weekly livestreams of classes, we have been able to reach over a million people worldwide; in addition we help thousands of people monthly, answering their questions, responding to requests for support and counseling, and following up to make sure they are doing well.

Grow with usOur current move to a new and bigger location seems, on the surface, to have been prompted by our current rented location no longer being viable. But the truth is that over a year ago we had started to exceed capacity at our Friday prayers, on Ramadan nights, and at other major events.

We also have to be ready to offer expanded services to our youth and children, as well as our elderly population.

Page 3: RHODA MASJID & SPIRITUAL WELLNESS CENTRE filethe saajid before the masjid. That is: the spirit before the structure. We believe the most important need of our time is to build the

Our community and the larger society around us have never been in greater need of support to walk the spiritual path, understand sacred texts in a language that resonates with them, and see and feel how faith can make life beautiful, not a burden.

Essential servicesThe Rhoda has been providing and will continue to provide:

•Spiritual counseling to help people apply Islam in their everyday life and find support during times of hardship, promoting and nurturing the healthy Muslim mindset.

•A community that is non-judgmental and welcoming, offering a much-needed sense of belonging.

•Opportunities to forge a healthy culture for our time and context: rooted in a spiritual ethos, welcoming of the arts and human expression.

•Safe teachings about Islam that are transformative, not just informative - empowering people to undertake the challenge of personal development.

•An approach that shifts paradigms, bringing the spiritual and sacred back into the centre of our lives and helping people reconnect in their relationship to God.

The challenges the Rhoda is addressingPeople want to love God, but feel they have no textual proof to do so. Youth are walking away from Islam to find meaning and wholeness in alternative practices - because Islam has been stripped of its

spiritual content for so long. People, in the absence of a welcoming community, are experiencing a loneliness so deep that it has driven them to despair. People are up against real-world challenges and find themselves at a loss for how Islam can offer anything of true value to them, so they go elsewhere.

We are in crisis. But we know that Islam can offer the way out of all these problems. We just need to take it out of the box. That’s what the Rhoda and its sister project the Lotus Community Corner have been doing for the past three years, and that is what we want you to help us continue to do in even bigger, better, ways.

It’s time for the Rhoda to grow in order to fulfil the vision behind it: to become a world-renowned centre for spiritual learning, the application of spiritual sciences, and the rejuvenation of the Muslim spirit. In the next few pages you will hear about how this vision can be fulfilled and how you can be part of it.

Does your compass help you to get there?

Sanad Collective, the organisation that founded the Rhoda, can be thought of as a communal compass. Your True North, Sanad Collective guides you to where you have always longed to be. Through heart-warming teachings and a nurturing community, transformational experience is made possible.

Sanad Collective provides tangible tools that go beyond knowledge of Islam: we help to knit the fabric of spiritual consciousness that strengthens communities by creating culture.

Sanad Collective offers teachings that shape the Muslim mindset and that foster bonds for spiritual mentorship, all the while encompassing a diverse community of people of all ages and backgrounds rooted in service to the community. Our work so far has shifted the goal post, setting a new bar for Islamic spaces. The bar is to provide and sustain an inspiring, inviting sacred space where we can foster

and strengthen your connection with God and His Beloved Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص.

We at Sanad believe that for Islam to be tangible there needs to be a physical community with communal bonds that are rooted in time and space. We believe that the gift of community starts with you, and it builds a social structure allowing you to hear God’s voice and for us to be collectively accountable and responsible for staying on a straight path, on HIS straight path. We want to improve the quality of life of our community and to facilitate a legacy that will transcend generations. It is about you, it is about us, it is about our children, it is about their children. It is about making easy the path to HIM in these lands, in this time and beyond this time, and we invite you to join us. Join us so together we can walk this path, and help others do so too. Sanad is the compass that helps us get there, and we are sure you didn’t pick up this compass by accident!

“ What has reached you was never meant to miss you and what has missed you was never meant to reach you. ” -Prophet Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

We at Sanad Collective hope we have reached you.

WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY BUILTBY THE GRACE OF GODEstablished in 2012, Sanad Collective has been blessed with great impact both locally and internationally.

Local Impact In just 3 years we have established:

• The Rhoda Masjid & Institute for Islamic Spiritual Learning, Ottawa

•The Lotus Community Corner (social enterprise), Ottawa

•Maison de Fatima (community space), Montreal

•Café Floraison (social enterprise), Montreal

Sanad Collective serves thousands of people in-person. The Rhoda Masjid & Institute is the headquarters of all of Sanad Collective’s activities, with the greatest amount of programming and impact. The Rhoda is a flagship and attracts international visitors every year, both students and community-builders in other countries who come specifically to learn from this model of community-building. The Rhoda Masjid & Institute has reached the point of being filled beyond capacity during special events like Ramadan evenings and Eid.

Global ImpactThrough live-streamed programs, articles, classes, and spiritual support, Sanad Collective impacts over a million people worldwide. Our approach has inspired sister communities in France, Sweden, Nigeria, Morocco, and Germany.

“ It is vital that we maintain and bring about these new institutes as an attempt to recapture that which has been lost in our time. What Shaykh Hamdi is teaching is vital for the resurgence of the community, not just to serve itself, but to serve outside the borders of that community. ” -Shaykh Walead Mosaad

*Nurturing a positive Muslim personality

*Shifting paradigms to support a healthy Muslim mindset

*Creating traditions to forge a vibrant Muslim culture

We are laying the foundation for the next generation of Islamic institutions: where people come to find themselves at home with God and his Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, nurture that relationship to its full potential, and invite others to share in it.

Rhoda Masjid & Spiritual Wellness CentreThe upcoming Rhoda will be in the style of the first Muslim institutions: the healing and wellness centres of ancient cities like Damascus. At these places, a person would be assigned four caregivers: a shaykh to take care of the spiritual wellbeing, a counselor in mental health to take care of the mental wellbeing, a doctor of physical ailments to look after physical wellbeing, and a dietician to enhance nutrition.

The new Rhoda will be a centre that houses various services to assist a person to gain all-around health and wellbeing. In addtion to a prayer space for all the five daily prayers, and a large classroom, the new Rhoda will also house offices for complementary care practitioners and mental health counselors, addressing the important and significant needs we see in our community.

Here are some of the services we will offer:•The Rhoda Institute for Islamic Spiritual

Learning with a religious curriculum addressing the needs of our times.

•The Homeschooling Collective, offering support to parents who wish to instill a strong spiritual foundation for their children.

A NEW HOME FOR THE RHODABY THE WILL OF GOD

•The Youth Hub: a workshop, art studio and gym to provide youth a safe space to meet each other, find themselves and to reach their full dynamic potential in their community. A place where they can gain mentorship along their journey, and know they are supported.

•The Community Corner, a café-bookstore for people to nurture relationships across generations, origins, and even faiths.

•Sacred Prayer Sanctuary (Mosque) for the five daily prayers and other Islamic occasions.

•Wellbeing Services such as counselling and holistic treatment clinics.

•Seniors’ Programming.•The “Green Dome”: A Rooftop Green-

House Garden in bloom year round!

2871 ST-JOSEPHBy the Grace of God, we’ve already found a location for the Rhoda Masjid & Spiritual Wellness Centre: 2871 St-Joseph, Orleans, Ottawa - a very well suited match for our needs.

A great neighbourhood2871 St Joseph is located in Ottawa’s East End, in the historic heart of Orleans - a bilingual and family-friendly neighbourhood. The building is steps away from a commercial centre, many small businesses, and Orleans’s main transit hub which in 2022 will be upgraded to a new light rail system. With this transport, it is easy for people from all over Ottawa to make their way to the Rhoda, including university and college students. The new property includes a private parking lot for almost 100 cars, as well as room for a garden and Orleans is minutes away from Ottawa’s greenbelt, farmland and nature reserves.

A turnkey projectBuilt in 1999, the building is relatively new and well maintained. It also has a stately appearance both inside and out. It was previously a funeral home, housing a small

chapel, multiple large rooms, offices, common areas, and a large dining hall in the basement. Importantly, it is fully wheelchair accessible, with an elevator and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. This is a major benefit considering the ageing population.

Cost savingsBuying a ready-made building saves us and the community hundreds of thousands of dollars, compared to building from the ground up! Money and time that would otherwise go to the design, city approval process, and bringing in services and utilities can be directly invested into the purchase of the property. We would be able to start implementing all aspects of the vision within a few short months of opening.

Great potential for developmentThe building lot is 1.2 acres; which will be used for the senior home and affordable housing, a community garden, and building extensions. We will also be building up by adding an all-season rooftop greenhouse garden.

Financially responsible& income generating

1. PartnershipsThe Rhoda will receive rental income from the following partnerships:

•Wellbeing services consisting of private practitioners whose vision is to serve and help Muslims;

•Senior homes and affordable housing built by developers and managed by a third party.

2. ProgrammingThe Rhoda will also manage the following income generating programs:

•Banquet halls and an industrial kitchen/catering for rites of passage celebrations (marriages, births, funerals graduation ceremonies ... ) as well as conferences;

•Rhoda Institute will continue to offer knowledge retreats and some paid education programs;

•Lotus Community Corner will continue to offer programming such as concerts, screenings and wellbeing workshops.

RHODA INSTITUTETraining Canadian imams and female scholars The Rhoda Institute’s focus is on building the Muslim mindset. The healthy Muslim mindset consists of a deep understanding of traditional teachings of Islam, coupled with a wisdom about how to apply these teachings to our current context. Programs are offered in both French and English.

We need to offer holistic and dynamic training for the next generation of Muslim

leadership: imams, female scholars, community leaders, chaplains, and mentors.

We need leaders who know how to speak to the needs of people in our time, who can serve as social stewards, shepherds, and community servants.

The Institute will provide a full training and certification program for those leaders. The Institute will also be home to traditional learning programs on Qur’an, Fiqh and Theology open to all members of society...

Special training will be provided through the Rhoda Institute to counselors and social workers who serve Muslim clients, to help them gain cultural and religious literacy in order to be more effective and sensitive to people’s needs. Not only will this be an income generating initiative, but it will help build bridges and foster meaningful inter-religious collaboration.

RHODA MASJIDOur new prayer hall, our Rhoda Masjid, will be able to accommodate around 200 people, and will be set up simply but tastefully, and without barriers or curtains.

It will be possible to extend the prayer area into the auditorium and the basement for larger gatherings such as Eid.

“ Just knowing that this type of masjid exists where women aren’t made to feel like trespassers gives me hope in islam. The gems of wisdom given out by its teachers are so valuable they’re worth the equivalent of hours in therapy which would cost a lot more than a mere donation. The things I’m learning just from your social media posts are lifting veils of darkness, helping me unlearn damaging misconceptions, making me more self-compassionate and gentle with others and strengthening my trust in the One. ” - Ayesha Syed

“As a new father, I think deeply about preserving the spirit of our religion. We are constantly pushed to question our faith and spiritual identity in our secular world. But it brings much peace to my heart to think that a community like the Rhoda, with the guidance of its Teachers, is there to build a healthy Islamic culture for us and our children.”-Stephane Pressault

OUR CHILDREN: OUR FUTUREFostering a sense of love of God and His Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصThere is no greater trust and no greater cause than raising the current generation of children to be carriers of the Message of God, by providing them the safe environment and the tools they need from now. Our focus is on preserving children’s deep sense of love and wonder for God and His Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. For the past ten years, we have been offering children’s Islamic education that is dynamic and

results in high levels of engagement. Our interactive, participatory pedagogy includes song, storytelling, writing workshops, theatre, art and sport as means for memorizing and absorbing the Quran, and learning the Islamic ethos.

ServiceAs children become youth, we provide healthy outlets for them to harness their desire and energy to make positive change, to explore new ideas, and establish their sense of self. The Lotus

Community Corner, our community space adjacent to the Rhoda, is the perfect place for our youth to start to offer service to others. We have trained over 20 youth in this environment, helping them gain a love for helping others, as well as providing them invaluable skills for future careers.

Within this nurturing community, children and youth interact with people of all ages, as well as with mentors and role models who joyfully live and express their love of God and His Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص in all that they do.

HOMESCHOOLING COLLECTIVE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMHomeschooling supportFor years, parents have been asking for space to create a homeschooling collective. The new Rhoda will be able to meet this need. Parents will work together to provide learning opportunities for their homeschooled children, and gain the benefit of religious classes provided by the Rhoda Teachers.

Weekend & afterschool classesFor the past ten years, enrolment in our Quran and Character classes has been so high that we have waiting lists. Our new space will allow us greater capacity to continue offering these programs to local children and youth.

YOUTH HUBThere is a massive need for programming to engage Muslim youth. In Ottawa alone, Muslim youth are some of the most frequent young offenders, and many youth engage in high-risk behaviours. We need space for our youth to feel at home and find their way in life. The intention behind the Rhoda Youth Hub is to make it a magnet for youth with exciting features like a gym, dojo, and art studio. Through mentorship programming, we will continue the important and life-changing work of forming lasting bonds of trust with our youth, so that when they are in trouble, they will come to us for guidance and support.

Because our teachers compassionately and confidently address the most taboo of topics, youth who come to the Rhoda have developed trust in them and a healthy ability to ask questions, knowing that they will never be turned away. We have seen youth turn their lives around completely thanks to the nuturing support of the Rhoda teachers and community. This work must continue. Rendering of new Lotus Community Corner

“I want to give the strongest endorsement to Shaykh Hamdi and Ustadha Shehnaz and to their work at the Rhoda. This is a very praiseworthy undertaking, to bring people together, where they can teach, where they can learn, where they can socialize in a good way and they can develop as Muslims and hopefully grow into a dynamic community that coheres.” -Dr. Umar Faruq Abd Allah

LOTUS COMMUNITY CORNEROne of the most original and innovative projects launched by our founders is the Lotus Community Corner, a cafe-bookstore adjacent to the Rhoda Institute. This space has allowed people of all backgrounds to come together through dynamic community programming including cooking lessons, free workshops, community gardening, concerts, poetry nights, and other events. The Lotus Community Corner will continue in our new location as a space for strengthening community bonds, such an essential aspect of wellbeing.

The caféWe often say that at the Community Corner ‘we serve friendship.’ In addition, you’ll find nutritional organic and local food, as well as specialty coffees. On a Friday after the congregational prayer, there is no better place to be than drinking a coffee with fellow congregants. It’s here that people catch up, discover needs to be met and arrange ways to help each other. This is a safe space for youth, as well as a place for people to meet with the Imam and ask informal questions.

The cafe element allows for people of all backgrounds to meet on common ground and break bread together. Perhaps most importantly of all, it is the space where people bring new people to get to know the Rhoda better. We call it the door to the Rhoda.

The bookstore & libraryThe art of reading has all but been lost in our time, and yet literacy has been shown to be an essential skill even in our digital world. We help people reconnect to literacy through book readings and storytelling for children. Offering a selection of books that have been validated as good and safe reads by our teachers, in both official languages of English and French, is an important way to help people further their learning as well as share it with others.

The programming It’s vital for the many gifted people in our community to share their skills and knowledge with our youth and others. We have developed a robust set of free community workshops and events, all offered on a volunteer basis by subject

matter experts in the community. This kind of programming enriches the lives of those who would not be able to pay for a workshop or class elsewhere, and opens new horizons for our youth especially.Examples of our programming include:

•It Takes a Village - an inter-generational women’s support group

•Book readings and author meet-ups•Communal cooking and meals•Islamic meditation / mindfulness•Inter-generational community gardening •Mental health awareness talks•Art and music therapy•Interfaith music concerts and lectures

Professional mentorship•We have been able to establish three

amazing programs in just three years:•Baraka Syrian Home Cooking - a social

enterprise employing Syrian refugee women

•Employment mentorship for newcomers and youth

•Youth professional barista program Our new building with its professional kitchen will provide even more opportunities!

WELLNESS SERVICESThe top floor of the new building will feature office spaces for a suite of complementary health services. The layout lends itself to a massage, physiotherapy, and/or acupuncture clinic as well as office spaces for counsellors, psychologists, and nutritionists.

These are essential services for the community who attends the Rhoda, and being able to offer them in a single space will facilitate the community’s access. The rental of the units provides for the ongoing sustainability of the Rhoda Institute & Spiritual Wellness Centre.

BANQUET HALLS & PROFESSIONAL KITCHENBanquet HallsThere are two banquet halls that can be rented for private use to host large gatherings and celebrations. The basement hall can seat up to 100 people, and comes with private access to washrooms, a kitchen and a service bar.

The top floor features an elegant banquet hall that can host up to 40 people, perfect for more intimate celebrations. The rental of these two halls as well as the professional kitchen to support hospitality services will be an important source of income generation.

Professional KitchenThe main floor features the perfect facility for a professional kitchen that can be rented out with the banquet halls, used for our social enterprise Baraka Syrian Homecooking, and enable food service during large community events such as Ramadan dinners. It can also be used for cooking classes and soup kitchen events where we share food as an expression of serving God.

Rendering of new senior homes & affordable housing

SENIORS RESIDENCES & AFFORDABLE HOUSINGWe are going to face a crisis soon if we don’t plan from now for the care of our ageing population. With the development potential that the large lot provides, our intention is to build seniors homes and affordable housing. What better place for Muslim seniors to be able to spend their

golden years than next to the mosque. Not only will they be able to attend all the prayers, but they will be able to participate in all the programming, spend their time at the Lotus Community Corner, and be visited by members of the community who can serve their needs.

In order to provide a wide range of specialized programming, we will pursue the creation of on-site partnerships with public seniors-serving agencies and government-subsidized seniors programming initiatives. A portion of all the rental units will be allocated to young people as affordable housing, with service agreements that involve their assisting their senior neighbours. This is a dynamic way to foster a living community.

This development project will be managed in partnership with established supportive and social housing agencies.

Accessibility 2871 St-Jospeh is an accessible building, with appropriate entrances, ramps, equipped bathrooms, and an elevator. The Rhoda will further ensure accessibility and comforts by assigning special chairs for elders and those in need of greater supports.

Rendering of “The Green Dome”

“THE GREEN DOME” ROOFTOP GREENHOUSE & GARDENIn the middle of an Ottawa winter, nothing could be more healing than the sight of green, and the Rhoda intends to supply this need. The crown jewel in the new Rhoda will be a year-round green space - a rooftop greenhouse garden - built as an additional floor within the first three years. This garden space will become the eventual site of the Lotus Community Corner, which will take its full form as a place for wellness programs, healing sessions, and organic eating.

Designed with sustainability in mind, and to high environmental standards, this will be a truly “green” dome.
